The problem of labor and delivery, either at term or occurring prematurely, are among the greatest problems facing physicians nowadays. The understanding of the process of preparation and initiation of active labor is of utmost importance. Currently, the clinical methods to assess the changes of the uterus and cervix are still subjective, inaccurate and crude. Fortunately, a noninvasive method of transabdominal uterine muscle electrical activity analysis (electromiography, EMG) is digitalized and standardized in recognizing uterine contractility, and biochemical changes, as well as ultrasound and fluorescent methods, are emerging to estimate cervical preparation prior to active labor...

The phrenic nerve is the only motor nerve in the diaphragm. The injury will lead to a diaphragmatic paralysis or eventration with paradoxical movements during breathing. The aim of this review is to analyze the diagnostic criteria, surgical indications, and the patients that are not treated by surgery. We review 53 cases with diaphragmatic pathology in the last 5 years; 19 females and 20 males. One was a diaphragmatic rupture, 13 were diaphragmatic hernias, and 39 had diaphragmatic paralysis. Diaphragmatic paralysis was diagnosed by fluoroscopy in 97%, electromiography 5...

CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 37-year-old male that came to emergency with diplopia of sudden onset. Ocular examination revealed severe exotropia, deficiency of convergence and the typical sings of bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO): absence of adduction and nistagmic abduction of both eyes. All the symptoms of this patient constitute the WEBINO (wall eyed bilateral ophthalmoplegia) syndrome. DISCUSSION: The most common causes of bilateral INO (multiple sclerosis, vascular accidents, etc...

INTRODUCTION: The objectives of the neurophysiological evaluation of infants with brachial plexus palsy are to determine the time of occurrence of the lesion, to locate the lesion and to determine its course. METHODS AND CONCLUSIONS: These objectives are achieved by studying affected upper extremity muscles by needle electromiography (EMG) and affected nerves by motor and sensory conduction studies. EMG is performed in the first week of life in those patients with brachial plexus palsy of unknown etiology to determine the age of the lesion for medico-legal reasons...

Uncoordinated voiding, since it was described by F. Hinman in 1973, have remained an ambiguous concept. Its clinical aspects are well known, but an urodynamic definition and therapeutic guidelines are lack. Through this work, we are going to discuss clinical and urodynamic aspects of Uncoordinated Voiding Syndrome, and to evaluate sphincterian re-education techniques in this cases. We present a series of 50 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of Uncoordinated Voiding Syndrome. Mean age was 11.9 years old...

A low-torque, bubble-free and multiple-channel fluid swivel of easy construction was recently described. This paper describes the design, construction and testing of 3 electrical channels added to the original fluid swivel. The new channels were tested monitoring intrahypothalamic temperature (T(hy)) by means of a copper-constantan thermocouple in freely moving rats, before and after a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) amphetamine injection (3 mg/kg). This test showed an increase in T(hy) after the injection and the maintenance of the electrical continuity along the whole testing period, even when the animals were hyperactive...

A case of a complete lumbosacral agenesis is presented, whose etiological factors are unknown. Clinically, motor deficit corresponded to the agenesis level, but the sensibility and the autonomous nervous system functions, which were conserved, partially, in lower levels than the normal ones in the agenesis. The case report is completed with electromiography, mielography, rectal biopsy, urography, cistography, opaque enema and inborn infection study. There are three facts: a partially conserved sensibility in the lower extremities, normal bladder function and above all, the presence of nervous parasympatics normal fibers in rectum wall, in contrast with the serious motor alteration just in the same medullar levels...

The evolution of the disease was studied during two years. From these data, on the basis of recent complete bibliography, the speculated abant the place of damage and the pathogenesis of this professional disease. There was demonstrated the importance of EMG in the earlyer diagnosis and in the medical and legal evaluation of the consequential damages of those diseases...

Forty patients, whose ages varied from 4 to 65 years, presenting skeletal muscle spascitiy as sequel of cerebral palsy, spinovertebral trauma and cerebral vascular diseases were treated with Dantrium (dantrolene sodium), a drug muscle relaxing. Laboratory data included: electromiography, chronaximetry, EEG and blood and urine tests. Clinical followup revealed subjective improvement in the patients and also objective decrease of spasticity in a satisfactory number. Patients who had improvement with this therapy also had no beneficial results with other drugs...

A complete urodynamic evaluation is possible only on the basis of multichannel recordings (pressure gradients, flow rate and outflow resistance, electromiography) and X-ray. The pharmacoradiology of the urinary bladder (experimental or therapeutic employment of cholinergic and adrenergic drugs) requires the knowledge of urodynamic parameters and neurophysiology of the micturition.

Four cases of familial spastic paraplegia with amyotrophy in siblings from a consanguineous married are reported. The routine laboratory examination were normal. The electromiography and muscle biopsy processed by histochemistry showed signs of denervation with reinervation. The motor nerve conduction velocity was decreased in the peroneal nerve in 3 cases. The teased fiber preparation of sural nerves was abnormal in four cases. It was found increased of C, D and G fibers suggesting demyelination with secondary remyelination...
