Aspiration pneumonia and extreme weight loss are risks whenever globus pharyngeus (GP) complicates major depressive disorder (MDD) in the older adult. The timely administration of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may reverse GP in this context. We review cases of GP in depressed older adults and describe both successful outcomes, as well as a fatal outcome associated with delays in offering ECT. MDD in the older adult complicated by GP and marked weight loss, or repeated aspiration, should be considered an urgent indication for ECT...

The retropharyngeal carotid artery (RCA) is a relatively rare anatomical malposition, and positional changes in the RCA is also extremely rare. In addition, there are some reports of "wandering carotid artery" which means that the carotid artery reciprocate positional changes (wandering) between its normal position and retropharyngeal regions, during follow-up evaluations. A male patient in his 50s with a chief complaint of globus pharyngeus. A pulsatile swelling of the posterior pharyngeal wall of the right side was found on clinical examination...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: In otolaryngology, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) analogues have been previously analyzed for their roles in neuropathic pain, chronic cough, tinnitus, and perioperative analgesia. The primary aim of this study is to comprehensively summarize and synthesize the existing evidence for lesser known uses of gabapentin and pregabalin in otolaryngology. STUDY DESIGN: A scoping review conducted of the available English-language literature was performed by two authors through April 1, 2021...

A lump in the throat ( globus pharyngeus ) is a form of paresthesia of the upper respiratory tract that impairs the quality of life of about 45% of people. This symptom is not pathognomonic for any disease. To improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment of patients with a complaint of a lump in the throat, a comprehensive examination and treatment of 47 patients aged 28 to 75 years were carried out, in which this complaint persisted despite the pathogenetic treatment. In the study, we used a video laryngoscope and a single-channel device for electrical stimulation...

Globus hystericus, also known as globus pharyngeus or globus sensation, is characterized by the physical sensation of a mass in one's throat. Globus sensation is more common in adults and reported more rarely in children. Adult patients with globus sensation score higher on neuroticism, introversion, anxiety, and depression. However, not all patients with globus sensation have psychiatric abnormalities. Thus, it is important to share an atypical presentation in children and highlight the necessity of ruling out other organic causes...

Globus is the sensation of a foreign body in the throat. Investigation and management of patients with globus is widely variable. Most investigations yield negative results yet incur varying patient morbidity and healthcare costs, while malignancy is vanishingly rare in the absence of red flag symptoms and ear, nose and throat examination findings. History taking is key and can help to identify possible causative pathology, directing further investigations and management if necessary. Treatment of globus mainly centres on patient reassurance and counselling, and may include reflux management, neuromodulation, or speech therapy in selected cases, and treatment of any identified cause...

Differential diagnosis of globus sensation in an otherwise asymptomatic patient should include hypopharyngeal fibrovascular polyp to avoid potentially fatal complications like airway compromise following regurgitation. We present a case of a 74-year-old man with a 13-cm long hypopharyngeal fibrovascular polyp with 9 months history of globus sensation. A narrow stalk of the giant polyp allowed endoscopic removal and complete resection with the CO2 laser. Histopathological examination was conclusive for the fibrovascular polyp...

An epidermal/(epi)dermoid cyst of the thyroid is a rare cause of an intrathyroidal mass. At radiological evaluation, it may initially be misinterpreted as a thyroid adenoma or carcinoma. We present a case report of a 15-year-old boy, who was evaluated because of a neck mass which caused globus pharyngeus and pain at swallowing. Ultrasound examination revealed a hypoechoic nodule-like structure in the left thyroid lobe. Aspiration of the nodule yielded white fluid. Cytological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of an epidermal inclusion cyst of the thyroid...

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic tumors of the larynx are rare, with few cases having been reported in the literature. Schwannomas are responsible for 0.1% of all benign tumors of the larynx. They arise in the sheaths of the peripheral, autonomic, and cranial nerves. The objective of this report is to describe a case of a bulky laryngeal schwannoma, the surgical procedure for its removal, and the long-term patient follow-up. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old Brazilian woman presented to our institution with a complaint of progressive dyspnea over the preceding year, as well as dysphonia, dysphagia for solids, and globus pharyngeus...

<b/>Sensory laryngeal neuropathy(SLN) is a kind of peripheral neuropathy presenting globus pharyngeus, chronic cough, increased mucus, dry throat, sore throat, frequent clearing of the throat, etc. When the sensory nerve of the larynx is affected by chemical, biological, mechanical or nutritional factors. Because of its nonspecific signs and symptoms, SLN is easy to be misdiagnosed as chronic pharyngitis or laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. SLN was came up to ENT physician in recent years and there are rare systematic reports currently, therefore, this review aims to summarize the etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of SLN, to raise awareness of this disease among our colleagues...

Background: Acupuncture points are commonly used by Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat throat discomfort. Transcutaneous electroacupuncture (TEA) is a new therapy combining transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation with meridian theory. The efficacy and mechanism of Transcutaneous electroacupuncture for globus pharyngeus has not been reported. The aim of our study was to explore the effect and possible mechanisms of TEA at CV22/LI3/LU11/ST36 for patients with globus. The patients were asked to complete the translated Turkish version (GETS-T) of GETS and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). OBJECTIVES: Globus pharyngeus (GP) is described as the subjective sensation of having a "lump" in the throat in the absence of correlating physical findings or dysphagia. Historically, despite the frequency of patient complaints, GP has been difficult to quantify with current outcome measures. This is in large part due to lack of a user-friendly, modernized, objective patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) of symptom severity. The aim of this study is to develop a modernized, practical, validated PROM for evaluating GP symptom severity...

Purpose: To evaluate the ability of patient driven HRM biofeedback to control UES basal pressure. Methods: HRM data was collected from 10 patients undergoing esophageal manometry...
