Electrical burn injuries can be catastrophic, threatening severe disability or mortality. We present a patient who suffered from electrical shock, requiring bilateral above knee amputations, right trans-radial amputation, renal replacement therapy, and veno-arterial extracorporeal life support (VA ECLS) therapy. While there exist reports of cases that have demonstrated the potential use of ECLS in burn patients with cardiogenic shock or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), this is a unique case of VA ECLS use for an electrical injury patient who developed mixed distributive-obstructive shock secondary to pulmonary embolism and sepsis...

The National Ignition Facility has recently achieved successful burning plasma and ignition using the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) approach. However, there are still many fundamental physics phenomena that are not well understood, including the kinetic processes in the hohlraum. Shan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 195001 (2018)0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.120.195001] utilized the energy spectra of neutrons to investigate the kinetic colliding plasma in a hohlraum of indirect drive ICF. However, due to the typical large spatial-temporal scales, this experiment could not be well simulated by using available codes at that time...

Morocco is the world's 5th largest olive oil producer with 160,000 tons in 2020/2021 and the production of 1 L of olive oil generated approximately 5 kilos of waste olive cake, this type of waste is dangerous for the environment and especially for groundwater. To address this issue and take into account the thermal properties of olive waste, our project's goal is to produce power and heat by using solid olive waste in a Stirling cogeneration system. Therefore, the goal of this article is to examine by using CFD tools the environmental impacts of the Moroccan solid olive waste burning in a CHP (combined heat and power) unit...

INTRODUCTION: During 2022-2023, the UK found itself in the midst of a domestic energy crisis, with the average domestic gas and electricity bill rising by 75% between 2019 and 2022. As a result, the use of hot water bottles, radiant heaters, and electric blankets increased. An unintended consequence of this may be an increase in burn injuries caused by misfortune, misuse, or the use of items in a state of disrepair. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore any increase in referrals to a single burns centre in England for injuries caused by hot water bottles, radiant heaters, or electric blankets...

There is a cross-disciplinary link between air pollution, climate crisis, and sustainable lifestyle as they are the most complex struggles of the present century. This review takes an in-depth look at this relationship, considering carbon dioxide emissions primarily from the burning of fossil fuels as the main contributor to global warming and focusing on primary SLCPs such as methane and ground-level ozone. Such pollutants severely alter the climate through the generation of greenhouse gases. The discussion is extensive and includes best practices from conventional pollution control technologies to hi-tech alternatives, including electric vehicles, the use of renewables, and green decentralized solutions...

OBJECTIVE: Electrical contact burns of the scalp cause serious morbidity and mortality. Early necrotic bone debridement and flap cover are crucial for successful wound closure. 18F Sodium Fluoride (NaF), with high bone-to-soft tissue activity ratio, is useful for bone viability assessment. This study evaluated the role of 18F NaF PET-computed tomography (CT) in objectively defining the extent and depth of nonviable calvarial bone, to guide adequate bone debridement. METHOD: Of 20 patients referred to our institute with electrical contact burns of the scalp during a 2-year period, 15 were enrolled in the study...

The gas flaring network is an inseparable constituent commonly present in most of the oil and gas refineries and petrochemical facilities conferring reliable operational parameters. The improper disposal of burn-off gases improperly results in environmental problems and loss of economic resources. In this regard, waste to energy transforming nexus, in accord with the "carbon neutrality" term, has potentially emerged as a reasonable pathway to preserve our planet. In a transdisciplinary manner, the present review article deeply outlines the different up-to-date strategies developed to recover the emitted gases (flaring minimization) into different value-added products...

Burns can cause severe damage to the skin owing to bacterial infection and severe inflammation. Although conductive hydrogels as electroactive burn-wound dressings have achieved remarkable effects on accelerating wound healing, issues such as imbalance between their high conductivity and mechanical properties, easy dehydration, and low transparency must be addressed. Herein, a double-network conductive eutectogel is fabricated by integrating polymerizable deep eutectic solvents (PDESs) including acrylamide/choline chloride/glycerol (acrylamide-polymerization crosslink) and thiolated hyaluronic acid (disulfide-bonding crosslink)...

Thermal, electrical, chemical, or electromagnetic radiation can cause painful wounds or burns. Spilling hot liquids onto the skin can also cause these kinds of injuries. The two biggest factors contributing to burn injuries in the elderly are smoking and exposure to open flames, while scalding is the primary cause of burn damage in children. Newborns and the elderly make up the majority of burn casualties. In India, there are estimated to be 6-7 million burn cases per year. The high incidence is attributed to the population's illiteracy, poverty, and lack of awareness of safety...

Neurointestinal diseases cause significant morbidity and effective treatments are lacking. This study aimes to test the feasibility of transplanting autologous enteric neural stem cells (ENSCs) to rescue the enteric nervous system (ENS) in a model of colonic aganglionosis. ENSCs are isolated from a segment of small intestine from Wnt1::Cre;R26iDTR mice in which focal colonic aganglionosis is simultaneously created by diphtheria toxin injection. Autologous ENSCs are isolated, expanded, labeled with lentiviral-GFP, and transplanted into the aganglionic segment in vivo...

This technical report aims to provide a visual guide to the drill-assisted external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) technique with silicone intubation. Through a step-by-step video demonstration, it addresses inherent documentation challenges and highlights crucial considerations. A critical aspect of the procedure's success lies in creating a clear space around the drilling area to prevent thermal burns and soft tissue wrapping around the burr. Additionally, it emphasizes the careful use of smaller burr diameters and the importance of drilling techniques, advocating for minimal perpendicular drilling while maintaining rotational polishing movements to minimize the risk of rapid penetration and potential nasal mucosal injury...

We report a case of skin dilator combined with titanium mesh to repair scalp and skull defects. An 18-year-old male with a scalp defect and skull necrosis due to high-voltage electrical burns was admitted to our hospital. In the first stage, the wound was debrided, antibiotics were applied to control the infection, and two skin dilators were embedded under the scalp after debridement. In the second stage, necrotic skull material was removed, the skull defect was repaired using titanium mesh, and the scalp defect was repaired by transferring expanded flaps...
