Gingival fibromatosis is a painless gingival overgrowth. It may result in difficulties with proper dental hygiene keeping, mastication and occlusion. Herein, a case of a 10-year-old patient was described. The patient reported to the Department of Periodontology and Oral Medicine of the Jagiellonian University Medical College in Krakow due to the problems with permanent teeth eruption (23-26), chewing and dental hygiene maintaining. Based on medical history, clinical examination, diagnostic tests and histopathological study of gingival tissue biopsies the patient was diagnosed with unilateral idiopathic gingival fibromatosis...

Drug-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO) is an oral clinical manifestation associated with certain medications such as immunosuppressants that are administered to organ transplant patients to prevent graft rejection. In patients with cardiac transplants, management of DIGO is critical. In such patients, plaque biofilm accumulation at the gingival interface might be detrimental as it may lead to transient bacteremia as well as systemic inflammation resulting in thromboembolic events. This case report describes the management of DIGO in a cardiac transplant recipient by change of immunosuppressant medication, non-surgical periodontal therapy and laser-assisted gingivectomy...

Amlodipine is a third generation dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that is frequently used in therapy of hypertension. Among many side effects, amlodipine has been found associated with gingival overgrowth (GO) which usually occurs within the first three months of starting therapy at a dose of 10 mg/day. However, there are very few reports on amlodipine-induced gingival overgrowth (AIGO) at a lower dose (5 mg/day) and only after short term administration. A 64-year-old male patient with hypertension, who received amlodipine (5 mg/day) for four years, sought medical attention at the Department of Periodontology and Oral Medicine, Institute of Dentistry, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina...

OBJECTIVE: This article describes the diagnosis, clinical and microscopic (histopathology and ultrastructural) features and treatment of a new family with hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) and highlights the importance of this genetic condition. STUDY DESIGN: To characterize the pattern of inheritance and the clinical features, members of a new family with HGF were examined. The pedigree was reliably constructed including the four latest generations of family...

Amelogenesis imperfecta is a hereditary condition that affects the development of enamel, causing quantity, structural and compositional anomalies that involve all dentitions. Consequently, the effects can extend to both the primary and secondary dentitions. Patients with amelogenesis imperfecta may present with clinical difficulties, such as insufficient crown length, tooth sensitivity and orthodontic discrepancies, all of which can be resolved successfully with an interdisciplinary approach. This case report describes the interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of a 22-year-old patient with amelogenesis imperfecta...

OBJECTIVE: To histologically assess and clinically co-relate the effectiveness of cryogen Tetrafluoroethane (TFE) for gingival depigmentation procedure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve patients having unaesthetic gingival melanin pigmentation were included in the study. Gingival tissues of eight patients having gingival melanin pigmentation undergoing gingivoplasty or gingivectomy for crownlengthening were exposed to the cryogen and this was used for the histological examination...

Ensuring clinical success begins with a careful discussion of treatment planning, comprehensively covering all variables in simple to complex cases. Procedures including the crown lengthening surgery, furcation treatment and mucogingival therapy and tooth restoration are essential treatment regimens requiring multifaceted expertise. The interplay of periodontics and restorative dentistry is present at many fronts including the response of the gingival tissue to the restorative preparations. Dental restorations and periodontal health are inseparably interrelated...

It is quite common to note chronic inflammatory Gingival overgrowths during and/or post orthodontic treatment. Sometimes the overgrowths may even potentially complicate and/or interrupt orthodontic treatment. With the introduction of soft tissue lasers these problems can now be addressed more easily. Amongst many LASERS now available in Dentistry DIODE LASERS seem to be most ideal for orthodontic soft tissue applications. As newer treatments herald into minimally invasive techniques, DIODE LASERS are becoming more promising both in patient satisfaction and dentist satisfaction...

Lasers and radiosurgery frequently used in human dentistry are rapidly entering veterinary dental use. The carbon dioxide, diode, and low-level therapy lasers have features including hemostasis control, access to difficult to reach areas, and decreased pain, that make them useful for oral surgery. Periodontal pocket surgery, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, gingival hyperplasia, operculectomy, tongue surgery, oropharyngeal inflammation therapy, oral mass surgery, crown, and frenectomy laser surgeries are described, including images...

Gingival hyperplasia is a rare condition and is of importance for cosmetic and mechanical reasons. Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis, a benign, slow-growing proliferation of the gingival tissues, is genetically heterogeneous. The enlargement is most intense during the eruption of the primary and permanent teeth, and minimal or nondetectable growth is observed in adults. The genetic aspect, clinical feature, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and treatment aspects are reviewed. The purpose of this paper was to report a case of idiopathic gingival fibromatosis in a 13-year-old female who had a negative family history for a similar type of gingival enlargement...

Today a lot of minor cosmetic surgery operations on the gingiva can easily be carried out directly by the orthodontist with a small quantity of topical anaesthetic and the use of a soft tissue laser. The Diode laser is the most commonly used laser in dentistry for minor surgery to the soft tissues. This kind of laser offers numerous advantages with respect to traditional or electric scalpels. In this article the authors will analyse several typical uses of the diode laser in daily orthodontic practice.

Increased hormone levels that are present during puberty and pregnancy are associated with localized or generalized gingival enlargement. This article reviews the gingival alterations that can occur during pregnancy and describes a case of generalized severe gingival enlargement associated with pregnancy and its management. A 36-year-old woman had severe bilateral gingival enlargement of short duration. The patient denied taking any medications. The laboratory report revealed no systemic abnormalities; however, the report disclosed that she was pregnant...

BACKGROUND: This paper is the first-ever report, to our knowledge, of a case of generalized primary gingival pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia(PEH) with significant periodontal findings in a 23-year-old Indian female patient. It explains the need to differentiate PEH from squamous cell carcinoma in diagnosis and treatment planning. The present article also reviews current immunohistologic staining methods used to differentiate PEH from squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: A two-stage surgical approach was used to eliminate the lesion by gingivectomy and gingivoplasty under local anesthesia...

AIM: This article describes the surgical management of a young, female patient with severe gingival enlargement of unknown etiology. BACKGROUND: Gingival enlargement frequently occurs as gingival hyperplasia, representing a reaction to a known stimulus or agent and, histopathologically, implies an increase in both extracellular matrix and cell numbers. The enlargement may range from mild, in which gingival architecture is minimally affected, to severe, in which the gingiva becomes bulbous and covers the clinical crowns of teeth...

BACKGROUND: Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a reactive hyperplastic lesion involving the gingiva or alveolar mucosa consisting of proliferating endothelial cells, a rich capillary bed, chronic inflammatory cells, fibroblasts, and giant cells. After complete clinical removal of PGCG recurrence occurs in about 10% of cases, and may result in an esthetic and functional soft tissue defect. This report describes a surgical procedure involving complete removal of a gingival PGCG in the maxillary esthetic zone and immediate tissue restoration achieving complete gingival augmentation...
