Frailty is an increasingly common geriatric condition that results in an increased risk of adverse health outcomes such as falls. The most widely-used means of detecting frailty is the Fried phenotype, which includes several objective measures such as grip strength and gait velocity. One method of screening for falls is to measure balance, which can be done by a range of techniques including the assessment of the Centre of Pressure (CoP) during a balance assessment. The Balance Quality Tester (BQT) is a device based on a commercial bathroom scale that can evaluate balance quality...

This paper presents a cuff-less hypertension pre-screening device that non-invasively monitors the Blood Pressure (BP) and Heart Rate (HR) continuously. The proposed device simultaneously records two clinically significant and highly correlated biomedical signals, viz., Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Photoplethysmogram (PPG). The device provides a common data acquisition platform that can interface with PC/laptop, Smart phone/tablet and Raspberry-pi etc. The hardware stores and processes the recorded ECG and PPG in order to extract the real-time BP and HR using kernel regression approach...

The detection of arterial Blood Pressure waveform provides important information about the subject health status. Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV) is a non-contact technique with high sensitivity able to detect mechanical movements of the arterial wall; several previous studies have shown that LDV is able to characterize cardiac activity. Photoplethysmogram (PPG) quantifies the digital volume artery pulse, which has been demonstrated to be closely related to the pressure signal measured by an arterial tonometer...

Long-term continuous patient monitoring is required in many health systems for monitoring and analytical diagnosing purposes. It has been recognized that these types of monitoring systems have shortcomings related to patient comfort and/or functionality. Non-contact monitoring systems have been developed to address some of these shortcomings. One of such systems is non-contact physiological vital signs assessments for Chronic Heart Failure (CHF) patients. This paper presents a novel pulmonary ventilation model that defines the relationship between the intrapulmonary pressure and the chest displacement...

End-systolic volume (ESV) and end-diastolic volume (EDV) are key parameters in the analysis of left ventricular (LV) function, and the study of cardiac remodeling. The volume regulation graph (VRG) relates these fundamental determinants, and permits convenient stratification for clinically relevant covariates. This contribution analyzes sex-associated differences in hemodynamic parameters for 197 heart failure (HF) patients, evaluated by biplane ventriculography, in combination with arterial pressure. We calculated LV parameters such as stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), ESV, EDV, ejection fraction (EF), end-systolic elastance (Emax), besides arterial parameters: effective arterial elastance (Ea), elastance ratio (the coupling index k), peripheral resistance (Rs), pulse pressure (PP), and arterial compliance (C), all normalized for body surface area when appropriate...

Electroencephalography (EEG) and centre of pressure (COP) data were recorded in young adults for 60 seconds during standing in visual transparent (VT) and visual occlusion (VO) conditions. In both of these conditions, participants wore VO liquid crystal spectacles which allowed the experimenter to accurately control visual information being presented or occluded to the participant. Alpha band (8-13 Hz) revealed significant differences in channel-averaged power spectrum in these two conditions, but not theta band (4-8 Hz) and beta band (13-30 Hz)...

Noninvasive measurement of blood pressure by optical methods receives considerable interest, but the complexity of the measurement and the difficulty of adjusting parameters restrict applications. We develop a method for estimating the systolic and diastolic blood pressure using a single-point optical recording of a photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal. The estimation is data-driven, we use automated machine learning algorithms instead of mathematical models. Combining supervised learning with a discrete wavelet transform, the method is insensitive to minor irregularities in the PPG waveform, hence both pulse oximeters and smartphone cameras can record the signal...

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a locally aggressive benign tumour which has propensity to erode the skull base. The tumour spreads along the pathways of least resistance and is in close proximity to the extracranial part of trigeminal nerve. Advancements in expanded approaches for endoscopic excision of tumours in infratemporal fossa and pterygopalatine fossa increase the vulnerability for the trigeminocardiac reflex. The manipulation of nerve and its branches during tumour dissection can lead to sensory stimulation and thus inciting the reflex...

Context: First or early second trimester pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) concentrations have previously been shown to be lower in women who subsequently develop gestational diabetes (GDM) and gestational hypertension. Objective: We therefore sought to investigate why circulating PAPP-A concentrations are related to the subsequent risk of GDM and gestational hypertension. Patients, Design and Setting: We measured serum PAPP-A concentrations around week 15 of pregnancy and related these to indices derived from week 28 oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) and blood pressures across pregnancy in the Cambridge Baby Growth Study cohort...
