Since the appearance of Vancomicin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in our country, the Chilean Ministry of Health recommended the surveillance of intestinal colonization in patients in critical wards. We report the results of surveillance in ICU and onco-hematological wards from 2002 to 2008, with analysis of possible risk factors: demographical data, use and type of antibiotic, days of hospitalization prior to sampling, and year of hospitalization. Colonization rate increased from 0.03 cases per 1000 bed-days in 2003 to 0...

BACKGROUND: Methicillin resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are an important cause of nosocomial infections. AIM: To determine the genotypes of MRSA strains. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty five strains of MRSA, isolated from patients hospitalized in Hospital Base Valdivia, were studied. The phenotype was determined through MicroScan in all strains and by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) in 41. The genotype of the strains was analyzed by a duplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the mecA gene, amplifying eight hypervariable DNA regions associated to such gene...

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a serious complication in cirrhotic patients, and the changes in the microbiological characteristics reported in the last years are impacting the choice of antibiotic used in the treatment. AIM: To evaluate the change in the epidemiology and antibiotic resistance of the bacteria causing spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in a 7 years period. METHODS: All the cases of cirrhotic patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis with positive cultural examination were retrospectively studied...

Aminoglycosides are mainly distributed in the extracellular fluid, so when they are given to neonates who have a large amount of extracellular fluid, their distribution is increased. In our data, the volume of distribution (Vd) of Arbekacin in the neonates was twice that of the adults, 0.54 l/kg. Therefore, the dose per weight of aminoglycosides to the neonates should be increased more than to the adults. In the renal function of the neonates, differentiation of the nephron is completed within 36 weeks after conception, but it is functionally immature...

Endogenous endophthalmitis (EBE) is intraocular infection usually associated by bcteremia. Although, EBE is an uncommon disease, visually prognosis is very poor. Immune suppressive disease, such as diabetes or malignancy is a predisposing factor of EBE. Although, in east Asia, including Japan, gram negative organisms reported as common pathogen causing EBE, we here repot a case of group B streptococcus EBE. A 53- year old man, who has history of diabetes mellitus, was admitted to our hospital with compliant of sudden visual loss and pain at his right eye...

The population of Gram-positive catalase-positive cocci from slightly fermented sausages was characterized at species and strain level by molecular techniques and some technological and hygienic aspects were also considered. Staphylococcus xylosus was the predominant species (80.8%) followed by Staphylococcus warneri (8.3%), Staphylococcus epidermidis (5.8%) Staphylococcus carnosus (4.6%), and Kocuria varians (0.4%). Proteolytic activity was observed in 23% of the isolates. The species with the highest percentage of proteolytic strains was S...

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are the main causes of refractory infections that are often resistant to antimicrobial agents. In these cases, combination of agents with antimicrobial activity is being examined. However, few studies have investigated combined effects with antimicrobial agents including carbapenem and aminoglycosides. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of panipenem (PAPM) combined with 3 aminoglycosides, arbekacin, amikacin, and netilmicin, and vancomicin (VCM) with an agar dilution checkerboard technique and the fractional inhibitory concentration index against 47 strains of MRSA and 56 strains of P...

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum is a bacterial pharyngeal pathogen that predominantly infects adolescents and young adults. It rarely causes severe infection. A case of sinusitis in an 18-year-old female patient with a skin rash is presented. The strain was susceptible to erythromicin, ampicilin, vancomicin, cephalotin, clindamicin, rifampicin and penicillin. Erythromicin has been proposed as first-line therapy.

Out of 3988 clinical specimens from hospital admitted patients 230 strains of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated, 45 strains (19.56%) were Methicillin resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). All MRSA strains were beta lactamase producers. Multidrug resistance was observed among MRSA strains more commonly than in methicillin sensitive strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). Maximum strains were resistant to penicillin (100%), co-trimoxa zole (97%) & chloramphenicol (93.33%). As least resistant to gentamicin & ciprofloxacin shown by MRSA, these drugs can be used in few situations after susceptibility test...

Of 11,444 samples examined, bacteriuria was estimated in 7143 samples. 9786 strains (29 genus) of bacteria were isolated--56.9 per cent as mono culture and 43.1 per cent as associations. Susceptibility to 21 antibiotic was determined by disk diffusion method for 1607 strains; beta-lactamase production was determined in 198 strains, MIC was determined for 41 antibiotics...

Antibiotic sensitivities of peptostreptococci, streptococci, Actinomyces, bacteroid, and fusobacterial strains pathogenic for the periodontium are analyzed. The sensitivities of these bacteria to broad-spectrum penicillins, cephalosporines, lincomycin, and macrolides, and to metronidasole and nitasole are assessed. New macrolide drugs macropen and rulide and gramicidine C, levomycetine, and rifampicin are highly active towards the above microflora. Expectant therapy for early Group B Streptococcus onset septicemia must provide coverage against other microorganism, such as L. Monocytogenes, H. Influenzae and S. Pneumoniae. It is possible to administer a combination of antimicrobial agents with activity against all or the most likely pathogens. Thus initial expectant therapy includes a broad spectrum semisynthetic penicillin (e.g. ampicillin) and an aminoglycoside (e.g. netilmicin). Vancomicin, teicoplanin and cefotaxime may also be used. We present a case of meningoencephalitis due to Listeria monocytogenes type IV in a patient in which the diagnosis of small-cells malignant diffuse non-Hodgkin's lymphoma had been established. He was hospitalized with vague clinical manifestations and without showing any neurological focus. Hours later, he presented clinical brain stem semiology. Within a 24-hour period, Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from blood and cephalorhachidian fluid (being the first time that this microorganism had been isolated for the past 20 years in our laboratory)...
