To evaluate the association between disease severity and hepatic steatosis in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Consecutively selected UC patients admitted to the gastroenterology clinic were enrolled in the study. UC severity was assessed by Truelove and Witts classification. Patients with severe UC were excluded from the study. NASH was determined based on persistently elevated serum aminotransferase levels and detection of fatty liver ultrasound. Patients with other etiologies for elevated aminotransferase levels were excluded...

The most common extraintestinal complication of Entamoeba histolytica is amoebic liver abscess (ALA). Hepatic vein and inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis are rare but well-documented complications of ALA, typically attributed to mechanical compression and inflammation associated with a large abscess. We present a case of a previously healthy 43-year-old Canadian man presenting with constitutional symptoms and right upper quadrant abdominal pain. He was found to have thrombophlebitis of the IVC, accessory right hepatic vein, and bilateral iliac veins...

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies. The liver is the most common site of distant metastasis, and liver metastasis is the leading cause of death in the patients with colorectal cancer. In recent years, the concept of diagnosis and treatment in colorectal liver metastasis (CLM) and the liver surgery techniques developed rapidly, the standardization of clinical practice elevated obviously, and the survival outcomes of more and more patients were significantly improved. Standardization of diagnosis and treatment in CLM comprised overall assessment of patients' condition and local tumor status based on multidisciplinary team collaboration and then institution of treatment strategy...

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is widely applied to tumors in clinical practice due to its minimally invasive approach. However, several issues lower therapeutic efficiency in some cases. Many synergists such as microbubbles and perfluorocarbon nanoparticles have recently been used to improve HIFU treatment efficiency, but none were determined to be effective and safe in vivo. In this study, nanoscale bubble-generating liposomes (liposomes containing ammonium bicarbonate [Lip-ABC]) were prepared by film hydration followed by sequential extrusion...

With the recent FDA approval for characterization of focal liver lesions (FLL) in both pediatric and adult patients using Lumason (sulfur hexafluoride microbubbles), increased use of ultrasound contrast for routine clinical use is expected. This agent has been available for many years in Europe and Asia, and a large body of literature is available regarding the sensitivity and specificity of this agent. In addition, a few studies have directly compared CEUS to CECT and CEMRI for the characterization of focal liver lesions...

PURPOSE: Radiofrequency ablation for liver tumors (liver RFA) is widely performed under ultrasound guidance. However, discriminating between the tumor and the needle is often difficult because of cavitation caused by RFA-induced coagulation. An unclear ultrasound image can lead to complications and tumor residue. Therefore, image-guided navigation systems based on fiducial registration have been developed. Fiducial points are usually set on a patient's skin. But the use of internal fiducial points can improve the accuracy of navigation...

BACKGROUND: There is interest about the role of platelet (PLT) number and function in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD patients have abnormalities of PLT number and function, especially mean platelet volume (MPV) which is known as a novel biomarker for atherosclerosis. We decided to compare PLT number and function between NAFLD and healthy participants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-control study, two groups of patients (65 cases with NAFLD and 65 cases without NAFLD) were included consecutively...

BACKGROUND Lienalis steal syndrome is a rare complication after orthotopic liver transplantation leading to severe complications. Routine duplex sonography allows early and safe detection of lienalis steal syndrome and secondarily helps to monitor the outcome by evaluating the hemodynamics. MATERIAL AND METHODS This analysis included eight patients who after orthotopic liver transplantation needed splenic artery embolization due to lienalis steal syndrome. Lienalis steal syndrome was assumed in case of elevated transaminases, bilirubinemia or persistent ascites, and the absence of further pathologies...

The sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) is an uncommon form of portal hypertension that occurs in hematopoietic-cell transplant recipients who receive intense conditioning treatments. The diagnosis is clinical and it is usually delayed, because in these patients there are many causes that can damage the liver and can delay its detection. We present the case of a 47-year-old man, whose diagnosis was made with clinical and analytical data supported by ultrasound signs that showed hepatic congestion. After treatment with defibrotide the patient improved clinically and analytically...

OBJECTIVES: Liver fibrosis (LF) is crucial for the individualized management of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV). We evaluated the concordance between two noninvasive methods for staging LF, transient elastography (TE) and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI), in patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus and HCV. We propose an algorithm for optimal use of both techniques in routine clinical practice. METHODS: A total of 89 human immunodeficiency virus/HCV-coinfected patients underwent TE and ARFI on the same day...

Severe toxicity and poor tumour penetration are two intrinsic limited factors to hinder the broad clinical application for most of first-line chemotherapeutics. In this study, a novel vitamin E succinate-grafted ε-polylysine (VES-g-PLL) polymer was synthesized by using ε-polylysine as backbone. By adjusting VES graft ratio, VES-g-PLL (50) with a theoretic VES graft ratio of 50% could self-assemble into a supermolecular micelle with a hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) of ca.20nm, and Zeta potential of 19.6mV. VES-g-PLL micelles themselves displayed a strong anti-tumour effect on glioma...

A 59-year-old Portuguese Caucasian man with a history of heavy alcohol intake and no significant medical history presented with ascites, weight loss and general malaise. The ascitic fluid analysis showed 921 cells/mm(3) with mononuclear predominance (93.6%), elevated total proteins and a slightly elevated serum-ascites albumin gradient. The abdominal ultrasound confirmed the presence of chronic liver disease with ascites, and additionally on CT there was evidence of peritoneal thickening. On repeat paracentesis, the ascitic fluid analysis showed elevated adenosine deaminase but it was negative for the presence of mycobacteria by Ziehl-Neelsen stain, Löwenstein-Jensen culture and PCR amplification...

We describe a case of a 36-year-old man with a history of chronic hepatitis C who presented with abdominal pain 3 days after undergoing a percutaneous ultrasound-guided liver biopsy. Initial investigations revealed a venobiliary fistula with haemobilia and obstructive jaundice with direct bilirubin peaking at 9.2 mg/dL. He underwent an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with sphincterotomy and stent placement, bilirubin decreased to 3.7 mg/dL, and the patient was discharged. The patient returned with recurrent abdominal pain and upper gastrointestinal bleeding with haemoglobin of 8...

Despite the increasing number of clinical trials in gene therapy, no ideal methods still allow non-viral gene transfer in deep tissues such as the liver. We were interested in ultrasound (US)-mediated gene delivery to provide long term liver expression. For this purpose, new positively charged microbubbles were designed and complexed with pFAR4, a highly efficient small length miniplasmid DNA devoid of antibiotic resistance sequence. Sonoporation parameters, such as insonation time, acoustic pressure and duration of plasmid injection were controlled under ultrasound imaging guidance...

Ovulation in the European eel can be induced by injection of DHP (17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one). The timing of injection is based on the developmental stage of the oocytes. The oocyte stage is determined by invasive biopsy or through external indicators of the oocyte hydration response: body weight index (BWI) and body girth index (BGI). However, in European eel, BWI and BGI are inaccurate indicators because the individual hydration response is highly variable. The aim of this study was to identify indicators of oocyte maturation non-invasively by applying ultrasonography...

Post-examination interpretation of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) cineloops of focal liver lesions (FLLs) requires offline manual assessment by experienced radiologists, which is time-consuming and generates subjective results. Such assessment usually starts by manually identifying a reference frame, where FLL and healthy parenchyma are well-distinguished. This study proposes an automatic computational method to objectively identify the optimal reference frame for distinguishing and hence delineating an FLL, by statistically analyzing the temporal intensity variation across the spatially discretized ultrasonographic image...

The goal of the work described here was to explore the cause of spleen stiffness (SS) in hepatic fibrogenesis and evaluate the value of SS in liver fibrosis (LF) staging. LF was induced with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in rats (n = 40). Supersonic shear wave imaging and contrast-enhanced ultrasound were performed to determine liver stiffness (LS), SS and splenic hemodynamics. SS, LS and free portal pressure exhibited moderate correlations with fibrosis stage (r = 0.744-0.835, p < 0.001). Time-intensity curves of contrast-enhanced ultrasound for the spleen were presented as decreasing peak intensity and slope of decrease, and increasing time to peak...
