BACKGROUND: Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) is the most common idiopathic inflammatory myopathy in children. Imaging exams are useful for muscle assessment, with ultrasonography (US) being a promising tool in detecting disease activity and tissue damage. There are few studies about muscle elastography. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to associate clinical, laboratory, and nailfold capillaroscopy (NC) assessments with US in JDM patients; and to compare the findings of US and Strain Elastography (SE) from patients and healthy controls...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the dilution titles at antinuclear antibodies (ANA) by indirect immunofluorescence observed in cell substrate HEp-2 and its association with the diagnosis of systemic connective tissue disease in ANA test requested by a Rheumatology Unit. METHOD: Samples of patients attended for the first time in the rheumatology unit, without prior ANA test, between January 2010 and December 2012 were selected. The dilution titers, immunofluorescence patterns and antigen specificity were recorded...

The loss of muscle mass and strength with aging, referred to as sarcopenia, is a prevalent condition among the elderly. Although the molecular mechanisms underlying sarcopenia are unclear, evidence suggests that an age-related acceleration of myocyte loss via apoptosis might be responsible for muscle perfomance decline. Interestingly, sarcopenia has been associated to a deficit of sex hormones which decrease upon aging. The skeletal muscle ability to repair and regenerate itself would not be possible without satellite cells, a subpopulation of cells that remain quiescent throughout life...

UNLABELLED: The aspartate aminotransferase (SGOT) and alanine aminotransferase (SGPT) are sensitive indicators of liver damage. While the TSGOT is also found in other organs, the SGPT is considered an enzyme specific liver. However, some authors state that the TGP can rise also in cases of muscle injury. Furthermore, there are reports in the literature suggesting the association of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) with viral hepatitis. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of abnormal liver function tests in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, evaluate possible associationsto liver diseases, determine its relationship with elevation of muscle enzymes and whether these patients have particular clinical and / or serological characteristics...

Hypothyroidism is a frequently diagnosed endocrine disorder that has characteristic clinical signs and symptoms. Myopathy is one of the manifestations of hypothyroidism and relatively common. We report a case of Hoffmann's Syndrome due to hypothyroid myopathy documented by clinical features, laboratory findings and positive response to thyroid hormone replacement therapy. A man, age of 22, was diagnosed as having primary hypothyroidism at the age of five, had been describing progressive weakness in his arms and legs for two months and complained about generalized muscle cramps and pain...
