Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogeneous disease that develops through diverse pathophysiological processes1,2 and molecular mechanisms that are often specific to cell type3,4 . Here, to characterize the genetic contribution to these processes across ancestry groups, we aggregate genome-wide association study data from 2,535,601 individuals (39.7% not of European ancestry), including 428,452 cases of T2D. We identify 1,289 independent association signals at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10-8 ) that map to 611 loci, of which 145 loci are, to our knowledge, previously unreported...

The degradation of organic dye from waterbodies is of great significance for clean production and environmental remediation. Herein, two porphyrin-based conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) loaded with nanoscale zerovalent iron (named as Por-CMPs-1-2@nZVI) were successfully fabricated by Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling reactions and the liquid-phase method. The as-synthesized Por-CMPs-1-2@nZVI composites were characterized by various means of analysis, and it was confirmed that Por-CMPs-1-2 loaded with nZVI had good photocatalytic performance...

BACKGROUND: Sleep, or a lack thereof, is strongly related to mood dysregulation. Although considerable research uses symptom scales to examine this relation, few studies use longitudinal, real-time methods focused on pediatric irritability. This study leveraged an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) protocol, assessing bidirectional associations between momentary irritability symptoms and daily sleep duration in a transdiagnostic pediatric sample enriched for irritability. METHODS: A total of N = 125 youth (Mage  = 12...

After spinal cord injury (SCI), the accumulation of myelin debris at the lesion exacerbates cell death and hinders axonal regeneration. Transplanted bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) have been proven to be beneficial for SCI repair, but they are susceptible to apoptosis. It remains unclear whether this apoptotic process is influenced by myelin debris. Here, we constructed rat BMSCs overexpressing human B-cell lymphoma 2 (hBcl2) alone (hBcl2 group), BMSCs overexpressing hBcl2 with an endoplasmic reticulum-anchored segment (hBcl2-cb) (cb group), and a negative control group (NC group) for transplantation in this study...

OBJECTIVE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) has demonstrated efficacy against multiple types of dystonia, but only a few case reports and small-sample studies have investigated the clinical utility of STN-DBS for Meige syndrome, a rare but distressing form of craniofacial dystonia. Furthermore, the effects of DBS on critical neuropsychological sequelae, such as depression and anxiety, are rarely examined. In this study, the authors investigated the therapeutic efficacy of STN-DBS for both motor and psychiatric symptoms of Meige syndrome...

The objective of this study was retrospectively to analyze the clinical characteristics and 18 F-FDG PET/CT findings in Meigs syndrome (MS) patients. A total of 21 patients with MS induced by ovarian stromal tumors and 69 patients with pseudo-MS caused by ovarian cancer (OC-PMS) were subjected to evaluation using 18 F-FDG PET/CT. Visual and semi-quantitative methods were employed to analyze the PET/CT findings. Visual analysis included recording whether the density of the primary tumor was uniform, whether there were cystic changes and calcifications, and the location of serous fluid accumulation...

This report details a rare case where a patient simultaneously suffered from Sjogren's syndrome (SS) and Meige's syndrome (MS). SS, an autoimmune disorder, and MS, a rare neurological condition characterized by involuntary eyelid closure, presented in a 73-year-old male. The patient had been experiencing dry eye symptoms for the past 5 years, with the onset of eyelid spasms and tetanic eye closure occurring 3 years ago. Traditional treatments, including subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation, provided only temporary relief...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Demons-Meigs syndrome is a rare condition characterized by the presence of a benign fibroma of the ovary, ascites, and pleural effusion. It is very uncommon, and the diagnosis is made with difficulty based on symptoms that usually mimic disseminated malignancy or tuberculosis, but imaging may confirm the diagnosis. The definitive treatment is laparotomy, after which the symptoms resolve. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 36-year-old female with Demons-Meigs' syndrome with severe dyspnea who underwent an abdominal surgical exploration, which revealed ascites of 1500 ml and an ovarian fibroma weighing 7...

Oromandibular dystonia is a focal dystonia characterized by involuntary movements of the jaw, oropharynx, lips, and tongue. The diagnosis of oromandibular dystonia is clinical and can be complex. For effective treatment, it is essential to understand its underlying etiology. A 70-year-old man was referred to our center with a diagnosis of Meige's syndrome, which had been present for five and a half years, for receiving botulinum toxin-A (BoNT-A) injections. Upon physical examination, he exhibited oromandibular dystonia, with a score of 177 points on the Oromandibular Dystonia Rating Scale (OMDRS)...

BACKGROUND: Individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) have an increased risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), but questions remain about the underlying pathology. Identifying which CAD loci are modified by T2D in the development of subclinical atherosclerosis (coronary artery calcification [CAC], carotid intima-media thickness, or carotid plaque) may improve our understanding of the mechanisms leading to the increased CAD in T2D. METHODS: We compared the common and rare variant associations of known CAD loci from the literature on CAC, carotid intima-media thickness, and carotid plaque in up to 29 670 participants, including up to 24 157 normoglycemic controls and 5513 T2D cases leveraging whole-genome sequencing data from the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine program...

BACKGROUND: Insulin resistance (IR) is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. The mechanisms by which IR predisposes to AD are not well-understood. Epigenetic studies may help identify molecular signatures of IR associated with AD, thus improving our understanding of the biological and regulatory mechanisms linking IR and AD. METHODS: We conducted an epigenome-wide association study of IR, quantified using the homeostatic model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR) and adjusted for body mass index, in 3,167 participants from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) without type 2 diabetes at the time of blood draw used for methylation measurement...

(1) Background: The first-line treatment for patients with focal or segmental dystonia with a craniocervical distribution is still the intramuscular injection of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT). However, some patients experience primary or secondary treatment failure from this potential immunogenic therapy. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) may then be used as a backup strategy in this situation. (2) Methods: Here, we reviewed the current study literature to answer a specific question regarding the efficacy and safety of the use of DBS, particularly for cervical dystonia (CD) and Meige syndrome (MS) in patients with documented treatment failure under BoNT...

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian fibrosarcoma is a rare cancer. In the literature, there have been very few occurrences of fibrosarcoma with ascites. The presence of ascites complicates the diagnosis further, and is associated with a poor prognosis and has been linked to chemoresistance and metastasis. Malignant solitary fibrous tumors in the retroperitoneum are rare, and their treatment strategies have not yet been established. A 61-year-old woman with dyspnea underwent laparotomy under a presumptive diagnosis of Meigs' syndrome. She underwent both adnexectomy and retroperitoneal tumor excision. The histologic diagnosis was of a fibrothecoma of both ovaries and a retroperitoneal solitary fibrous tumor that was considered malignant based on its mitotic activity. Local recurrence was observed 9 months postoperatively; re-excision was performed, and radiation therapy was administered...
