The main factor causing irreversible blindness is glaucoma. Early detection greatly reduces the risk of further vision loss. To address this problem, we developed a domain adaptation-based deep learning model called Glaucoma Domain Adaptation (GDA) based on 66,742 fundus photographs collected from 3272 eyes of 1636 subjects. GDA learns domain-invariant and domain-specific representations to extract both general and specific features. We also developed a progressive weighting mechanism to accurately transfer the source domain knowledge while mitigating the transfer of negative knowledge from the source to the target domain...

OBJECTIVE: The number of admissions for severe diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes (T1D) increased during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. We aimed to investigate whether there has been a change in this situation in recent years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All children with T1D who were diagnosed in our tertiary hospital between 2019 and 2023 were included. Plasma insulin, C-peptide, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and antibodies against thyroid peroxidase, thyroglobulin, insulin, islet cell, glutamic acid decarboxylase, tissue transglutaminase IgA, and endomysium IgA were measured...

Life tables are one of the most common tools to describe the biology of insect species and their response to environmental conditions. Although the benefits of life tables are beyond question, we raise some doubts about the completeness of the information reported in life tables. To substantiate these doubts, we consider a case study (Corcyra cephalonica) for which the raw dataset is available. The data suggest that the Gaussian approximation of the development times which is implied by the average and standard error usually reported in life tables does not describe reliably the actual distribution of the data which can be misleading and hide interesting biological aspects...

AIM: The surgical success rate of tympanoplasty appears to be influenced by a number of variables. Eustachian tube dysfunction has been shown as one of the factors causing failure in tympanoplasty. It is known that bilateral disease and decreased in mastoid pneumatization are associated with Eustachian tube (ET) dysfunction. In this study, the relationship between the success of type 1 tympanoplasty and mastoid pneumatization, bilateral disease and ET function was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 44 patients who were operated for chronic otitis media in our clinic were included...

BACKGROUND: The association of homocysteine with coronary artery disease (CAD) has been explored previously with mixed findings. The present Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (SRMA) has assessed the pooled estimate of association between homocysteine (Hcy) and CAD, and its variation over the period and geography. METHODS: Systematic literature search was done in PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane to identify the observational studies that have reported mean Hcy among cases (CAD) and control...

INTRODUCTION: Cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have been believed to be associated with the novel COVID-19 infection, and also with the following vaccines developed against the infection. Our work aims to investigate the incidence of GBS after COVID-19 vaccination, and describe its clinical characteristics and potential confounders. METHODS: An electronic search was conducted through four databases: PubMed, Scopus, medRxiv, and Google Scholar for all case reports and case series describing after COVID-19 vaccine administration...

This scoping review examines the role of digital solutions in active, participant-centered surveillance of adverse events following initial release of COVID-19 vaccines. The goals of this paper were to examine the existing literature surrounding digital solutions and technology used for active, participant centered, AEFI surveillance of novel COVID-19 vaccines approved by WHO. This paper also aimed to identify gaps in literature surrounding digital, active, participant centered AEFI surveillance systems and to identify and describe the core components of active, participant centered, digital surveillance systems being used for post-market AEFI surveillance of WHO approved COVID-19 vaccines, with a focus on the digital solutions and technology being used, the type of AEFI detected, and the populations under surveillance...

-oxidopyridinium ions are water stable and soluble heteroaromatic betaines that behave as latent dipoles and undergo a wide variety of cycloadditions. Research into the cycloaddition reactions of 3-oxidopyridiniums was spearheaded by Alan R. Katritzky and collaborators from the early 1970s until the late 1980s, but they have yet to be used for bioorthogonal applications. Herein we report that 3-oxidopyridiniums can readily react with 4-dibenzocyclooctynol (DIBO), a common bioorthogonal handle, in a [3+2] cycloaddition...

METHODS: The patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy between January 2019 and February 2021 were divided into two groups preoperatively. The first 75 patients were appointed to the posterior fixation group, and the second 75 were to the control group. Changes in gastric volume and body mass index were assessed in the postoperative 12th month...

OBJECTIVES: Because of its low frequency in adult populations and clinical and laboratory overlap with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and other T-cell lymphomas, T-cell/natural killer (NK) cell systemic, chronic, active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) (T/NK sCAEBV) infection remains underdiagnosed, preventing critical, prompt therapeutic interventions. METHODS: We report a 5-case series that included 2 adult patients with T/NK sCAEBV and 3 additional adult patients with T/NK lymphomas with concomitant systemic EBV infection to review these entities' overlapping diagnostic and clinical features...

Glioblastoma (GBM) represents a profoundly aggressive and heterogeneous brain neoplasm linked to a bleak prognosis. Hypoxia, a common feature in GBM, has been linked to tumor progression and therapy resistance. In this study, we aimed to identify hypoxia-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and construct a prognostic signature for GBM patients using multi-omics analysis. Patient cohorts were collected from publicly available databases, including the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA), and The Cancer Genome Atlas-Glioblastoma Multiforme (TCGA-GBM), to facilitate a comprehensive analysis...

PURPOSE: Successful treatment of facial lines with botulinum toxin is largely dependent on patient satisfaction; thus, a structured treatment journey that uses patient-reported outcomes (PROs) is helpful for maximizing botulinum toxin results. To develop a patient-centric approach for botulinum toxin injections in facial aesthetics, a group of clinicians met to provide opinions on an optimal treatment journey that uses PROs to quantify treatment benefits on patient quality of life. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A multidisciplinary panel of 9 clinicians with expertise in facial aesthetic procedures convened for an advisory board that was preceded by and followed up with a structured, multistep consensus discussion...
