BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy and optimal timing of local treatment in patients with borderline resectable (BR) or locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) treated with upfront FOLFIRINOX. METHOD: Between 2015 and 2020, 258 patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) were analysed. Treatment outcomes were compared between systemic treatment group (ST) and multimodality treatment groups (MT) using Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank test. The MT were stratified as follows: FOLFIRINOX + radiation therapy (RT) (MT1), FOLFIRINOX + surgical resection (MT2), and FOLFIRINOX + RT + surgical resection (MT3)...

There are limited data on outcomes after implantation of everolimus-eluting stents (EES) in East Asian patients with small vessel coronary lesions. A total of 1,600 patients treated with XIENCE EES (Abbott Vascular, CA, USA) were divided into the small vessel group treated with one ≤2.5 mm stent (n=119) and the non-small vessel group treated with one ≥2.75 mm stent (n=933). The primary end point was a patient-oriented composite outcome (POCO), a composite of all-cause death, myocardial infarction (MI), and any repeat revascularization at 12 months...

Local recurrences in patients with grade 4 adult-type diffuse gliomas mostly occur within residual non-enhancing T2 hyperintensity areas after surgical resection. Unfortunately, it is challenging to distinguish non-enhancing tumors from edema in the non-enhancing T2 hyperintensity areas using conventional MRI alone. Quantitative DCE MRI parameters such as Ktrans and Ve convey permeability information of glioblastomas that cannot be provided by conventional MRI. We used the publicly available nnU-Net to train a deep learning model that incorporated both conventional and DCE MRI to detect the subtle difference in vessel leakiness due to neoangiogenesis between the non-recurrence area and the local recurrence area, which contains a higher proportion of high-grade glioma cells...

IMPORTANCE: Complete revascularization by non-infarct-related artery (IRA) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with acute myocardial infarction is standard practice to improve patient prognosis. However, it is unclear whether a fractional flow reserve (FFR)-guided or angiography-guided treatment strategy for non-IRA PCI would be more cost-effective. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of FFR-guided compared with angiography-guided PCI in patients with acute myocardial infarction and multivessel disease...

BACKGROUND: Although benefits of intravascular imaging (IVI) in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) have been observed in previous studies, it is not known whether changes in contemporary practice, especially with application of standardized optimization protocols, have improved clinical outcomes. PURPOSE: To characterize the clinical effects of two RP1L1 hotspots in patients with East Asian occult macular dystrophy (OMD). METHODS: Fifty-one patients diagnosed with OMD harboring monoallelic pathogenic RP1L1 variants (Miyake disease) from Japan, South Korea, and China were enrolled. Patients were classified into two genotype groups: group A, p.R45W, and group B, missense variants located between amino acids (aa) 1196 and 1201. The clinical parameters of the two genotypes were compared, and deep learning based on spectral-domain optical coherence tomographic (SD-OCT) images was used to distinguish the morphologic differences...

Cytochrome b5 reductase 3 (CYB5R3) is involved in various cellular metabolic processes, including fatty acid synthesis and drug metabolism. However, the role of CYB5R3 in cancer development remains poorly understood. Here, we show that CYB5R3 expression is downregulated in human lung cancer cell lines and tissues. Adenoviral overexpression of CYB5R3 suppresses lung cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo. However, CYB5R3 deficiency promotes tumorigenesis and metastasis in mouse models. Transcriptome analysis revealed that apoptosis- and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related genes are upregulated in CYB5R3-overexpressing lung cancer cells...

Mitigating sepsis-induced severe organ dysfunction with magnetic nanoparticles has shown remarkable advances in extracorporeal blood treatment. Nevertheless, treating large septic animals remains challenging due to insufficient magnetic separation at rapid blood flow rates (>6 L h-1 ) and limited incubation time in an extracorporeal circuit. Herein, superparamagnetic nanoclusters (SPNCs) coated with red blood cell (RBC) membranes are developed, which promptly capture and magnetically separate a wide range of pathogens at high blood flow rates in a swine sepsis model...

Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant associated with increasing health concerns and environmental hazards. Toxicological analyses of PFOS exposure are hampered by large interspecies variations and limited studies on the mechanistic details of PFOS-induced toxicity. We investigated the effects of PFOS exposure on Xenopus laevis embryos based on the reported developmental effects in zebrafish. X. laevis was selected to further our understanding of interspecies variation in response to PFOS, and we built upon previous studies by including transcriptomics and an assessment of ciliogenic effects...
