OBJECTIVES: To characterize the ent-kaurene oxidase (KO) involved in maize (Zea mays) gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis. RESULTS: Two putative KO genes were identified in maize based on the homologous alignment. Biochemical characterization indicated that one of them encoded a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450) CYP701A26, which reacted with ent-kaurene to form ent-kaurenoic acid, the key intermediate of GA biosynthesis. CYP701A26 showed constitutive expression in active growing tissues and no inducible expression, which led to putative designation of CYP701A26 as the ZmKO...

Chronic otitis media is a major contributor to acquired hearing loss in developing countries. Developing countries such as India, with huge populations and poor health infrastructures, have always felt the shortage of trained specialists who can provide quality care to meet the enormous demand for treatment of this disease. This pilot study assessed the feasibility of empowering trained health workers equipped with ENTraview, a store-and-forward telemedicine device that integrates a camera- enabled smart phone with an otoscope...

From tonsillectomies to major neck dissections, a large proportion of ENT operations require the neck to be extended. This is normally achieved by a gel pad or sand bag shoulder bolster, or in more frugal hospitals - a bag of normal saline. In our theatres two sizes of shoulder bolster are generally available. BACKGROUND: Allo-immune mediated lung syndromes (allo-LS) are life-threatening complications after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Respiratory virus (RV) has been suggested to play a role in the pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: We studied the relation between RV-DNA/RNA detection in upper/lower airway before HCT and the occurrence of allo-LS. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed all HCT recipients between 2004 and 2014, in whom Real-Time PCR for RV was done from Nasal-Pharyngeal-Aspirates (NPA) and Broncho-Alveolar- Lavage (BAL) before HCT...

Two new diarylheptanoids, alpinins A (1) and B (2), together with eighteen known diarylheptanoids (3-20), were isolated from the rhizomes of Alpinia officinarum. Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis including HRMS, IR, and 1D- and 2D-NMR. Structurally, alpinin A is a new member of the small family of oxa-bridged diarylheptanoids and contains the characteristic 2,6-cis-configured tetrahydropyran motif (C1-C5 oxa-bridge). The absolute configuration of alpinin A was confirmed by asymmetric total synthesis of the enantiomer (ent-1), corroborating the assignment of the molecular structure...

Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most prevalent tick-borne disease in Europe. Erythema migrans (EM), an early, localised skin rash, is its most common presentation. Dissemination of the bacteria can lead to more severe manifestations including skin, neurological, cardiac, musculoskeletal and ocular manifestations. Comparison of LB incidence rates in the European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) and Balkan countries are difficult in the absence of standardised surveillance and reporting procedures. We explored six surveillance scenarios for LB surveillance in the EU/EEA, based on the following key indicators: (i) erythema migrans, (ii) neuroborreliosis, (iii) all human LB manifestations, (iv) seroprevalence, (v) tick bites, and (vi) infected ticks and reservoir hosts...

Cosmetic industries have an interest in exploring and developing materials that have the potential to regulate melanin synthesis in human skin. Although melanin protects the skin from ultraviolet irradiation, excess melanin can be undesirable, particularly on the face where spots or freckles are associated with an appearance of aging. In this study, we found that ent-11α-hydroxy-15-oxo-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid (11α-OH KA) in Pteris dispar Kunze strongly inhibited melanin synthesis by suppressing tyrosinase gene expression...

INTRODUCTION: Pneumonia is the third most common postoperative complication. However, its epidemiology varies widely and is often difficult to assess. For a better understanding, we utilized two national databases to determine the incidence of postoperative pneumonia after various surgical procedures. Specifically, we used the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) and the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) to determine the incidence and yearly trends of postoperative pneumonia following orthopaedic, urologic, otorhinolaryngologic, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, and general surgeries...

According to Coombs and Gell, cell-mediated immune responses belong to type IV reactions and are borne mainly by T lymphocytes. The eliciting allergens are usually so-called haptens. Haptens are substances which develop to whole antigens only by binding to protein carriers. In otorhinolaryngology, delayed allergic hypersensitivities are apparent mainly as contact eczemata. Facial dermatitis, auricle and ear canal eczema as well as perioral eczema belong to the most common forms of contact dermatitis in ENT patients...

Hyper IgM syndrome is a well known genetic (primary) immunodeficiency disorder which was first described in 1961. It is caused by B lymphocyte deficiency characterized by normal or elevated serum IgM levels and low or zero levels of IgG, IgA, IgE resulting from isotype-switching deficiency. Clinical manifestations are dominated by recurrent infections, especially involving the digestive tube of the ENT sphere and the lungs. This syndrome is caused by B-cell immunoglobulin class switch deficiency and decreased capacity to induce proliferation of T lymphocytes...

Over the past 10 to 20 years, endoscopic endonasal surgery has become for many teams the preferred treatment for sinonasal tumors. Technical advances in the field of surgical instrumentation (good visualization, hemostasis…) and the progress of imaging guidance (to avoid neurovascular complication) has made those procedures simpler and safer. Nevertheless, endonasal endoscopic procedures require a trained surgical team of ENT specialist and neurosurgeon. Endoscopic endonasal surgery has been reported to be feasible for all types of sinonasal tumors whether benign tumors such as inverted papillomas, or malignant tumors...

INTRODUCTION: ENT surgeons may refer children with otitis media with effusion (OME) to audiology for consideration of hearing aids. They are an option for the treatment of OME, but are only effective if the child actually wears them. Our study investigated what proportion of children referred for hearing aids actually receive them, and whether children use them. METHOD: Retrospective study of children referred to audiology from November 2013 to August 2014, including 70 children referred by ENT for hearing aids for OME, plus a further 5 children with OME given hearing aids through direct access audiology service...
