BACKGROUND: Acute nonspecific mesenteric lymphadenitis (ANML) is a common cause of acute abdominal pain in children with no specific treatment. METHODS: A total of 13 patients (6 boys, 7 girls) aged 7.3 (5-13.5) years with severe acute abdominal pain were evaluated using ultrasonography and laboratory tests to establish the diagnosis of ANML. They were treated with prednisone 1 mg/kg (max 40 mg daily) for a maximum of 5 days. The intensity of abdominal pain was evaluated before and after treatment using a numeric rating scale...

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) may develop as a rare complication following COVID-19. MIS-C presentation varies substantially, but fever and gastrointestinal symptoms are the most prominent. Indeed, gastrointestinal involvement may be severe enough to present as acute abdomen, posing challenges to clinicians. We present herein the case of a healthy five-year-old male who presented with fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain, resembling acute abdomen. The patient had no history of SARS-CoV-2 infection or exposure, and MIS-C diagnosis was initially surpassed unnoticed...

Tuberculous lymphadenitis is the most common entity of abdominal tuberculosis, which occurs due to reactivation of a latent focus. Its diagnosis requires a high degree of suspicion, for which it requires endoscopic, radiological, and histopathological studies. In the evaluation of lymphadenopathies, endoscopic ultrasound-guided aspiration puncture plays an important role. We present the case of a 22-year-old male patient who was admitted to the Emergency Department of the Arzobispo Loayza National Hospital due to upper gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to tuberculous mesenteric lymphadenitis that compromised the gastric wall...

Septicaemia is the main pathological manifestation of Salmonella infection in chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera), although information on its pathology is limited. We now describe the gross, histological and immunohistochemical features of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serotype Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) infection in ranched chinchillas. Eighty-five adult pregnant chinchillas had anorexia, prostration, weight loss, hyperthermia and abortion. Necropsy of 13 animals revealed splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, mesenteric lymphadenomegaly, prominent Peyer's patches, pulmonary oedema, white pinpoint lesions in multiple organs and petechiae in the urinary bladder...

Opportunistic infections are life-threatening conditions in immunocompromised patients including those with primary immunodeficiency. We describe a case of X-linked chronic granulomatous disease presenting with mesenteric abscess caused by a coinfection with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and Phialemonium sp. The patient received BCG vaccination at 5 months old. He developed left axillary BCG lymphadenitis at 17 months of age, and 3 months later mesenteric abscess occurred. Concomitant use of rifampicin and itraconazole at 17 months of age might have reduced serum itraconazole concentrations and led to superinfection with Phialemonium sp...

COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) can mimic and cause acute abdominal diseases such as intestinal obstruction, terminal ileitis, colitis, internal necrotizing mesenteric lymphadenitis, acute appendicitis, and sometimes bowel perforation. We report a case of a 6-year-old female with MIS-C and acute purulent pelviperitonitis, who was successfully treated by laparoscopy and an antibiotic without intravenous immunoglobulin and aspirin therapy. We believe that the case description should help to find a worthy place for early laparoscopic and other minimally invasive procedures for the management of similar MIS-C cases...

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is a Gram-negative bacterium causing infection in humans through contaminated water and/or food. The infection commonly occurs as gastroenteritis and fever, abdominal pain due to mesenteric lymphadenitis and diarrhoea. Bacteraemia is rare and is typically seen in immunocompromised patients and occurs with different clinical presentations like Far East scarlet-like fever, splenic abscess, or mimic appendicitis. This is a case report of Y. pseudotuberculosis bacteraemia and splenic abscess in a Caucasian male...

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is an Enterobacteriaceae family member that is commonly transmitted by the fecal-oral route to cause infections. From the small intestine, Y. pseudotuberculosis can invade through Peyer's patches and lymph vessels to infect the mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs). Infection of MLNs by Y. pseudotuberculosis results in the clinical presentation of mesenteric lymphadenitis. MLNs are important for immune responses to intestinal pathogens and microbiota in addition to their clinical relevance to Y...

IMPORTANCE: Pyrin-associated autoinflammation with neutrophilic dermatosis (PAAND) is a monogenic autoinflammatory disorder with autosomal dominant inheritance and has been associated with monoallelic p.Ser242Arg and p.Glu244Lys variations in the MEFV gene. This dermatosis shares clinical features and pathogenesis with familial Mediterranean fever, although it is a clinically distinct entity. OBJECTIVE: To identify the genetic basis of PAAND in a consanguineous family with 2 affected children and to prescribe an effective genotype-guided treatment...

Paratuberculosis a contagious and chronic disease in domestic and wild ruminants, is caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). Typical clinical signs include intractable diarrhea, progressive emaciation, proliferative enteropathy, and mesenteric lymphadenitis. Paratuberculosis is endemic to many parts of the world and responsible for considerable economic losses. In this study, different types of paratuberculosis and MAP in sheep and goats were investigated in Inner Mongolia, a northern province in China contiguous with two countries and eight other provinces...

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease that can present with a wide range of symptoms. Abdominal pain is less common than other symptoms but is more frequent among patients with severe disease. Various abdominal imaging findings are described in the literature for children and adults with COVID-19 infection. Mesenteric lymphadenopathy is reported in pediatric patients with COVID-19 gastrointestinal infection. It is very rarely reported in the adult population. We report a case of an adult male with multiple risk factors, who presented with severe abdominal pain and tenderness in the right inguinal fossa...

We detail a novel presentation of tuberculosis associated with intestinal perforation in an endangered Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) from South Australian waters and confirm the presence of this disease in the region of highest pup production. In February 2017, a 3-yr-old juvenile male died shortly after hauling out at the Kingscote beach on Kangaroo Island. On postmortem examination, we found a mid-jejunal intestinal perforation and partial obstruction (from a strangulating fibrous and granulomatous mesenteric mass), a marked multicentric abdominal fibrosing granulomatous lymphadenitis, and a large volume serosanguinous peritoneal effusion...
