Endometrioid Stromal Sarcoma (ESS) is an uncommon tumour that occurs in women over wide age range of 11 years to 76 years accounting for only 0.2% of all uterine malignancies and for 15%-26% of primary uterine sarcomas. These tumours arising from ovary are extremely rare. Most of them are associated with nulliparous or perimenopausal women. It is commonly associated with endometriosis of the ovary. Here we present this rare case to emphasize on the uniqueness and histomorphology of ovarian ESS in patients with endometriosis...

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy luteoma is a distinctive non-neoplastic hormone dependent lesion arising in pregnancy and mimicking an ovarian tumour. Fewer than 200 cases have been described in the English-language literature. Its clinical and morphological features are characteristic and must be considered in order to prevent diagnostic misinterpretation. To the best of our knowledge the association of pregnancy luteoma with endometriosis has not been reported in literature to date. CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old pregnant woman with no particular past medical history, consulted her gynaecologist at 17 weeks gestation for routine check-up...

Multicystic mesothelioma (MM) is a relatively rare tumour arising in the pelvic peritoneum of the tuboovarian region of young woman. Exceptionally, MM occurs on the serosal surfaces of various organs including kidney, bladder, lymph nodes, and liver. We report here the first case of MM wherein a 58-year-old woman with a previous history of endometriosis of the right ovary presented with a large multicystic mass of the spleen. The diagnosis of MM was made on a surgical specimen after splenectomy. A histopathologic examination is always necessary for the diagnosis of MM which should be differentiated from other lesions particularly from cystic lymphangioma...

The recent 2014 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumours of the Female Reproductive Organs introduced a new category of ovarian neoplasm designated "seromucinous tumours". The recognition of this distinctive group of tumors is an important addition to the classification but the term "seromucinous" has serious flaws that obscures the nature of these neoplasms. Morphologically, seromucinous tumors in addition to serous and endocervical-type mucinous epithelium, contain endometrioid, indifferent and squamous type epithelium...

BACKGROUND: Synchronous multiple primary malignancies in the female genital tract are infrequent. From 50 to 70% of them corresponds to synchronous cancers of the endometrium and ovary. To our knowledge, this is only the third case report in the international literature of three concurrent gynaecological cancers of epithelial origin. A case is presented, as well as a literature review due to the infrequency of its diagnosis and the lack of information on the subject. Seromucinous neoplasms are a new category of ovarian epithelial tumor in the revised World Health Organization Classification of Tumours of the Female Reproductive Organs. Borderline variants are well described, but there have been few reports of seromucinous carcinomas. We report the clinicopathologic features in 19 cases of ovarian seromucinous carcinoma in patients aged 16 to 79 years (mean 47). In 16 cases, the neoplasm was unilateral and in 3 cases bilateral. The tumors ranged in size from 1.8 to 18 cm (mean 10...

INTRODUCTION: Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is a heterogeneous condition with poor survival outcomes. The genetics of hereditary and sporadic ovarian cancers will be covered and its implications to management and future research are discussed. SOURCES OF DATA: Key recent published literature. AREAS OF AGREEMENT: Both genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of EOC. Most EOCs develop sporadically and are divided into low-grade/genetically stable type I tumours and high-grade/genetically unstable type II tumours...

Clear cell carcinomas of the female genital tract are rare tumours with a fearsome reputation for having poor responses to conventional platinum-based chemotherapy and poor prognosis. However, it is now clear that early-stage ovarian clear cell carcinoma has an excellent prognosis and may not require any adjuvant therapy. In addition, radiotherapy may also have a key role to play in adjuvant management of clear cell tumours. Identification of patients who truly do not need adjuvant chemotherapy is important...

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a chronic, recurring condition that can develop during the reproductive years. It is characterised by the development of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. It is the most common cause of pelvic pain in women. This endometrial tissue development is dependent on oestrogen produced primarily by the ovaries and, therefore, traditional management has focused on suppression of ovarian function. Mounting evidence shows that altered immune function plays a crucial role in the genesis and development of endometriosis...

Three years previously she underwent a colonoscopy, which was found to be unremarkable. Clear cell tumours of the ovary are relatively uncommon. Most of them are clear cell carcinomas. Benign and borderline clear cell tumours are extremely rare and almost always fibromatous. We report a case of a 34-year-old woman. Ultrasound and computed tomography showed a right ovarian mass 8 cm in diameter. The patient underwent right salpingo-oophorectomy. Microscopic examination revealed glands and cysts different in size and shape within an abundant stromal component without evidence of stromal invasion...

BACKGROUND: The Y-box-binding protein (YB-1) is described as a potential oncogene highly expressed in tumors and associated with increased cell survival, proliferation, migration and anti-apoptotic signaling. The aim of our study was to examine the expression and role of YB-1 in human endometriosis (Eo) and its association with cell survival, proliferation and invasion. METHODS: We analyzed the gene and protein expression levels of YB-1 by quantitative real-time RT-PCR and immunoassays, respectively, in peritoneal macrophages, ovarian endometrioma and eutopic endometrial tissues/cells derived from women with (n= 120) and without (n= 91) Eo...

Serous, endometrioid, clear cell and mucinous histotypes are the most common epithelial ovarian cancer. Most serous cancers appear to originate from precursor lesions at the fimbriated tubal end, whereas most endometrioid and clear cell cancers seem to derive from atypical endometriosis. The concentrations of AMH, FSH, tumour necrosis factor (TNF), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and several interleukins were analysed. Women with endometriosis had significantly lower AMH in serum and FF (serum: 6...
