In examining the dependence of the sea surface reflectance of skylight ρs on sky conditions, wind speed, solar zenith angle, and viewing geometry, Mobley [Appl. Opt.38, 7442 (1999).10.1364/AO.38.007442] assumed ρs is independent of wavelength. Lee et al. [Opt. Express18, 26313 (2010).10.1364/OE.18.026313] showed experimentally that ρs does vary spectrally due to the spectral difference of sky radiance coming from different directions, which was ignored in Mobley's study. We simulated ρs from 350 nm to 1000 nm by explicitly accounting for spectral variations of skylight distribution and Fresnel reflectance...

We propose a miniaturised light stage for measuring the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) and the bidirectional texture function (BTF) of surfaces on site in real world application scenarios. The main principle of our lightweight BTF acquisition gantry is a compact hemispherical skeleton with cameras along the meridian and with light emitting diode (LED) modules shining light onto a sample surface. The proposed device is portable and achieves a high speed of measurement while maintaining high degree of accuracy...

Exposure to erythemally-effective solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) that contributes to malignant keratinocyte cancers and associated health-risk is best mitigated through innovative decision-support systems, with global solar UV index (UVI) forecast necessary to inform real-time sun-protection behaviour recommendations. It follows that the UVI forecasting models are useful tools for such decision-making. In this study, a model for computationally-efficient data-driven forecasting of diffuse and global very short-term reactive (VSTR) (10-min lead-time) UVI, enhanced by drawing on the solar zenith angle (θs) data, was developed using an extreme learning machine (ELM) algorithm...

Miniaturization in percutaneous surgery has seen its zenith in microperc. Technological advances have enabled us to treat renal lithiasis through a 4.8 Ch. caliper percutaneous access. According to published literature, the technique is reproducible and when applied to small and medium size renal lithiasis has a high success rate keepin a low complication rate. Its main advantage is the absence of tract dilatation, diminishing the bleeding risk inherent to percutaneous access, postoperative pain and hospital stay...

OBJECTIVE: Long-term data regarding the safety and durability of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) are limited. The study objective was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of TEVAR in high-risk patients with descending thoracic aortic pathology. METHODS: High-risk patients were treated with thoracic endografts (2001-2011) under a prospective, physician-sponsored, investigational device exemption trial. Three-dimensional reconstructions and measurements were performed on computed tomography scans acquired before discharge, at 1, 6, and 12 months, and then yearly thereafter...

BACKGROUND: Octogenarians with complex abdominal aortic aneurysms are at higher risk of death and morbidity after open repair. Fenestrated endovascular aneurysm repair (FEVAR) is an alternative to open repair for high-risk patients, such as octogenarians. The aim of this study was to evaluate perioperative and midterm outcomes of FEVAR among octogenarians at high and standard risk for open repair. METHODS: During a 2-year period, 85 patients (68 men [78%] and 17 women [22%]) underwent FEVAR using Zenith (Cook Medical, Bloomington, Ind) Fenestrated AAA Endovascular Grafts (70%), Zenith p-Branch (7%), and fenestrated custom-made devices (22%)...

BACKGROUND: As endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) continues to advance, eligibility of patients with anatomically complex abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) for EVAR is increasing. However, whether complex EVAR is associated with favorable outcome over conventional open repair and how outcomes compare with infrarenal EVAR remains unclear. This study examined perioperative outcomes of patients undergoing complex EVAR, focusing on differences with complex open repair and standard infrarenal EVAR...

Nocturnal dung beetles (Scarabaeus satyrus) are currently the only animals that have been demonstrated to use the Milky Way for reliable orientation. In this study, we tested the capacity of S. satyrus to orient under a range of artificial celestial cues, and compared the properties of these cues with images of the Milky Way simulated for a beetle's visual system. We find that the mechanism that permits accurate stellar orientation under the Milky Way is based on an intensity comparison between different regions of the Milky Way...

The importance of ground-based measurements of ultraviolet radiation has increased since the discovery of the stratospheric ozone layer depletion. Spectroradiometers are the most widely used class of instruments, although the requirement to work in attended stations is sometimes limiting. In this work we present a filter radiometer, named F-RAD, with good optical stability, very short sampling time (1 min), and proven reliability. The instrument is based on a stand-alone functioning, making it suitable for operation in hostile environments...

Patients undergoing endovascular repair (EVAR) of aortoiliac or iliac artery aneurysm may require sacrifice of one or both internal iliac arteries (IIAs). Until Food and Drug Administration-approved commercial grafts became available, endovascular IIA preservation was accomplished using the "sandwich" technique, but limited information is available regarding the results of this method. After obtaining institutional review board approval, we identified patients undergoing IIA preservation with the sandwich technique during EVAR at our institution...

Total ankle replacement (TAR) is an alternative to fusion, replacing the degenerated joint with a mechanical motion-preserving alternative. Minimal pre-clinical testing has been reported to date and existing wear testing standards lack definition. Ankle gait is complex, therefore the aim of this study was to investigate the effect on wear of a range of different ankle gait kinematic inputs. Five Zenith (Corin Group) TARs were tested in a modified knee simulator for twelve million cycles (Mc). Different combinations of IR rotation and AP displacement were applied every 2Mc to understand the effects of the individual kinematics...

We developed a multiple-field-of-view multiple-scattering polarization lidar (MFMSPL) to study the microphysics of optically thick clouds. Designed to measure enhanced backscattering and depolarization ratio comparable to space-borne lidar, the system consists of four sets of parallel and perpendicular channels mounted with different zenith angles. Depolarization ratios from water clouds were large as observed by MFMSPL compared to those observed by conventional lidar. Cloud top heights and depolarization ratios tended to be larger for outer MFMSPL channels than for vertically pointing channels...

Imidacloprid (IMD) is the most widely used neonicotinoid insecticide found on environmental surfaces and in water. Analysis of surface-bound IMD photolysis products was performed using attenuated total reflectance FTIR (ATR-FTIR), electrospray ionization (ESI-MS), direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART-MS) and transmission FTIR for gas phase products. Photolysis quantum yields (φ) for loss of IMD were determined to be (1.6 ± 0.6) x 10-3 (1s) at 305 nm and (8.5 ± 2.1) x 10-3 (1s) at 254 nm. The major product is the imidacloprid urea derivative (IMD-UR, 84% yield), with smaller amounts of the desnitro imidacloprid (DN-IMD, 16% yield) product, and gaseous nitrous oxide (N2O)...

This paper shows the validation of integrated water vapor (IWV) measurements retrieved from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), using as reference nine ground-based GPS stations in the Iberian Peninsula. The study period covers from 2007 to 2009. The influence of two factors, - solar zenith angle (SZA) and IWV -, on OMI-GPS differences was studied in detail, as well as the seasonal dependence. The pseudomedian of the relative differences is -1 ± 1% and the inter-quartile range (IQR) is 41%. Linear regressions calculated over each station show an acceptable agreement (R(2) up to 0...
