OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare two commercially available off the shelf branched endografts for thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair, namely the E-nside (Artivion) and Zenith t-Branch (Cook Medical) devices. METHODS: This multicentre retrospective study (2020 - 2023) included patients treated by branched endovascular aortic repair (BEVAR) for TAAA using the inner branched E-nside or the outer branched t-Branch. Endpoints were 30 day technical success and major adverse events (MAEs) as well as 1 year freedom from target vessel instability and main endograft instability...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anatomical feasibility of current available fenestrated endografts (FEVAR) and on-label chimney technique (EnChEVAR) in patients with complex abdominal aortic aneurysms (C-AAA). METHODS: Feasibility of EnChEVAR (Endurant II/IIS CE-marked [Medtronic]) and 4 types of FEVAR (Zenith Fenestrated CE-marked, Zenith Fenestrated Low-Profile [LP] custom-made device [CMD] [Cook Medical], Fenestrated Anaconda LoPro90 CMD, Fenestrated Treo CMD [Terumo Aortic]) was assessed according to the manufacturer's instructions for use...

INTRODUCTION: Endovascular treatment of type B aortic dissections (TBAD) has currently acquired a primary therapeutic role when anatomically feasible. The main issue with thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for aortic dissection is the actual nature of the aortic wall, which is structurally compromised and more fragile. Indeed, a wealth of data have shown that TEVAR for TBAD will lead, in a substantial proportion of cases, to a device-related adverse event named distal stent-graft induced new entry (dSINE)...

Objective : The multibranched off-the-shelf Zenith® t-Branch (Cook Medical, Bloomington, IN) device is commonly chosen for endovascular repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. The aim of this study was to report early and mid-term outcomes in all patients treated with the t-Branch in Norway; Design and Methods : A retrospective multicenter study with Norwegian centers performing complex endovascular aortic repair was undertaken. T-Branch patients from 2014 to 2020 were included. All postoperative computed tomography angiography images were reviewed, and demographic, anatomical, perioperative and follow-up data were analyzed; Results: Seventy patients were treated in a single-step ( n  = 55) or staged ( n  = 15) procedure...

BACKGROUND: The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) cannot be eradicated even with suppressive antiretroviral therapy because its retrotranscribed genome integrates into the DNA of host cells, creating a long-term reservoir. Quantification of total HIV-1 DNA in peripheral blood is a biomarker of this reservoir that can predict progression of the infection, treatment response, and HIV-1-related complications. A deeper understanding of the reservoir may help develop a cures. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize persons living with HIV-1 (PLWH) with unquantifiable total HIV-1 DNA in blood (below the quantification threshold) and identify associated factors...

INTRODUCTION: The adolescent age group typically ranges from 10 to 19 years. This age group differs from the paediatric and adult populations based on their physiological, psychological, and social behaviour. Patients of this age group usually present with trauma, swellings, burns, hernias, hydroceles, haemorrhoids, fibroadenomas, abscesses, pilonidal diseases, etc. The objective of this study was to identify various causes requiring surgical intervention in adolescent patients and to determine the demography of these patients, reasons for surgery, and surgical outcomes in the patients of the adolescent age group...

BACKGROUND: Air embolism is a known risk during thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) and is associated with an incomplete deairing of the delivery system despite the saline lavage recommended by the instructions for use (IFU). As the delivery systems are identical and residual air remains frequently in the abdominal aortic aneurysm sac, endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) can be used to examine the effectiveness of deairing maneuvers. We aimed to evaluate whether increasing the flush volume can result in a more complete deairing...

RATIONALE: A hostile iliac access route is an important consideration when enforcing endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). Herein, we report a case of AAA with unilateral external iliac artery occlusion, for which bifurcated EVAR was successfully performed using a single femoral and brachial artery access. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 76-year-old man who had undergone surgery for lung cancer 4.5 years prior was diagnosed AAA by computed tomography (CT)...

Previous evidence suggests that observing individuals in painful situations elicits whole bodily responses, unveiling the interdependence of the body and empathy. Although the role of the body has been extensively described, the temporal structure of bodily responses and its association with the comprehension of subjective experiences remain unclear...

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have attracted significant attention for their broader therapeutic impact beyond simply controlling blood sugar levels, particularly in their ability to influence inflammatory pathways. This review delves into the anti-inflammatory properties of SGLT2 inhibitors, with a specific focus on canagliflozin, empagliflozin, and dapagliflozin. One of the key mechanisms through which SGLT2 inhibitors exert their anti-inflammatory effects is by activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a crucial regulator of both cellular energy balance and inflammation...

In this comprehensive study, we delved into the capabilities of five fungal strains: Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium chrysogenum, Penicillium glabrum, and Penicillium rubens (the latter isolated from heavy crude oil [HCO]) in metabolizing HCO as a carbon source. Employing a meticulously designed experimental approach, conducted at room temperature (25 °C), we systematically explored various culture media and incubation periods. The results unveiled the exceptional resilience of all these fungi to HCO, with A...

In this paper, we describe conversion factors (CF) for the calculation of biologically effective irradiances (BEI) from erythemal irradiance for three effects: photosynthesis of previtamin D3, psoriasis healing, and inactivation of the SARS-Cov-2 virions. CFs were empirically derived from measurements of spectral solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation during all sky conditions at four mid-latitude sites in the Northern Hemisphere, namely Aosta, Belsk, Reading, and San Diego. These CFs were found to depend on solar zenith angle (SZA) and total column ozone, but are largely independent (within ± 5% for SZA < 60°) of local conditions such as surface albedo, visibility and other local atmospheric patterns...
