Solitary splenic metastasis is extremely rare, with only 27 reported cases in the literature. An 81-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for treatment of pulmonary and splenic lesions. Chest computed tomography showed a small lung nodule in the right upper lobe, abdominal computed tomography showed an 8 cm splenic mass with abnormal accumulation, and positron emission tomography revealed a maximum standardized uptake value of 7.9. She had elevated serum cancer antigen 19-9 (1847 U/mL) and carcinoembryonic antigen concentrations (17...

Subsequent to the publication of the above paper, the authors noted that there was an error on Fig. 4 of page 2046, in which the symbols of α-L-fucosidase 1 (FUCA1) and fucosyltransferase 8 (FUT8) had been mistakenly labelled the wrong way around (FUCA1 should have been represented by the blue bars, and FUT8 by the red). The corrected version of Fig. 4 is shown below, which now accurately shows how average levels of FUCA1 mRNA were low in the anaplastic thyroid cancer samples (ATCs), whereas expression levels in the papillary thyroid cancer samples (PTCs) were comparable, or slightly higher, than those present in normal thyroid tissues...

Astrocyte elevated gene-1 (AEG-1), known as an oncogene, is overexpressed in various cancers and implicated in tumor progression and metastasis. However, its functional significance and underlying molecular mechanisms in thyroid cancer remain to be elucidated. In the present study, we detected the potential function of AEG-1 in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). We also investigated the relation between AEG-1 and matrix metalloproteases (MMP)2 and 9 through immunohistochemistry, western blotting, real-time PCR, immunofluorescence staining, zymography and co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP)...

Thyroid papillary carcinoma is the most common endocrine neoplasm and generally carries a favorable prognosis. However, a small subset of papillary carcinomas transforms into anaplastic carcinoma, an undifferentiated cancer with a dismal prognosis. Recent studies using next-generation sequencing revealed the genomic landscape of papillary carcinoma and anaplastic carcinoma. However, risk factors for anaplastic transformation in papillary carcinoma remain obscure. In the present study, we investigated molecular alterations of papillary carcinoma and anaplastic carcinoma components in 27 tumors in which anaplastic carcinoma coexisted with antecedent papillary carcinoma...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand (CCL)2, the prototype Th2 chemokine, is secreted by tumor cells, and has growth promoting effects. Whether CCL2 protumorigenic activities will be validated, then CCL2 and its receptor CCR2 may be therapeutic targets in cancer. METHODS: We tested in "primary human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) cells" (ANA) versus "normal thyroid follicular cells" (TFC): a) CCL2 secretion basally, after IFN-g and/or TNF-a stimulation; b) PPARg activation by thiazolidinediones (TZDs), rosiglitazone or pioglitazone, on CCL2 secretion, and on proliferation and apoptosis in ANA...

Surgery is the mainstay curative treatment in most cancer. We aimed to test the new hypothesis that cancer surgery performed during holiday periods is associated with worse long-term prognosis than for non-holiday periods. This nationwide Swedish population-based cohort study included 228,927 patients during 1997-2014 who underwent elective resectional surgery for a cancer where the annual number of resections was over 100. The 16 eligible cancer sites were grouped into 10 cancer groups. The exposure, holiday periods, was classified as wide (14-weeks) or narrow (7-weeks)...

Here we present a challenging case of a hepatic flexure colon tumor of 61-year-old woman with no primary lesion of lung cancer. Immunohistochemistry was applied and 50 genes were analyzed by next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology. The tumor contained medium to large size neoplastic cells with evident nucleoli to be diagnosed poorly differentiated neuroendocrine predominantly large cell carcinoma of colon [G3: World Health Organization (WHO) 2010] (pT3 N0: 7th edition pTNM). Cytokeratin (CK) AE1÷AE3 staining was predominantly membranous with partial distribution in "dot-like" pattern in perinecrotic cancer fields to be reminiscent of small cell carcinoma...

OBJECTIVE: Preablative stimulated thyroglobulin (ps-Tg) has the potential to be used in identifying distant metastatic differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DM-DTC), but its single level can be affected by remnant thyroid tissue and thyrotropin (TSH). The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the value of serial ps-Tg measurements in identifying DM-DTC specifically. METHODS: A total of 317 DTC patients with serial measurements of ps-Tg, TSH and anti-Tg antibody were divided into M1 (n=72) and M0 (n=245) according to the presence of distant metastasis (DM) or not...

Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is the most aggressive malignancy of the thyroid, during which undifferentiated tumors arise from the thyroid follicular epithelium. ATC has a very poor prognosis due to its aggressive behavior and poor response to conventional therapies. Gene-directed enzyme/prodrug therapy using genetically engineered mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) is a promising therapeutic strategy. The doxycycline (DOX)-controlled Tet inducible system is the most widely utilized regulatory system and could be a useful tool for therapeutic gene-based therapies...

Despite evidence linking thyroxin use and breast cancer, little is known regarding the risk of other cancers with thyroxin use. The purpose of this case-control study was to evaluate the association of thyroid cancer with primary hypothyroidism based on a population-based database. The data for this case-control study were retrieved from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005. We included 1285 patients with thyroid cancer as cases and 3855 sex- and age-matched subjects as controls. We used conditional logistic regression to examine the association of thyroid cancer with previously diagnosed hypothyroidism...

In patients with differentiated thyroid cancer, stimulated thyroglobulin (sTg) levels after thyroid hormone withdrawal (THW) at remnant ablation (RA) and at 6 to 12 months are known to have good prognostic value. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impacts and best cutoff values of sTg levels under recombinant human thyroid stimulating hormone (rhTSH) treatment at RA and at follow-up. A total of 151 patients were enrolled, of whom 77 were followed up with rhTSH-stimulated Tg (rhTSH-sTg) and 74 with THW-stimulated Tg (THW-sTg) at 6 to 12 months after rhTSH-aided RA...

Many human cancers have altered cyclin-dependent kinase activity. Inhibition of cyclin-dependent kinases may arrest cell cycle progression and represents an important strategy in the treatment of malignancies. We evaluated the therapeutic effects of roniciclib, a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, as a treatment for anaplastic thyroid cancer. Roniciclib inhibited anaplastic thyroid cancer cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Roniciclib activated caspase-3 activity and induced apoptosis. Cell cycle progression was arrested in G2/M phase...

Published data on the association between 8q24 rs6983267 polymorphism and cancer risk are inconsistent. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between rs6983267 polymorphism and cancer risk. We searched on PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) up to November 1, 2016 for relevant studies. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to estimate the strength of this association. We included 78 case-control studies with a total of 73,996 cases and 96,741 controls in this meta-analysis...

BACKGROUND: Accurate reference intervals (RIs) based on a healthy pediatric population are essential for pediatric test result interpretation. The CALIPER project has recruited a large healthy cohort and completed a series of a priori studies to address gaps in pediatric RIs. As immunoassays from different manufacturers for endocrine and special chemistry markers are not standardized and show marked intermethod differences, direct RI studies are needed for each major analytical platform...

The incidence both of diabetes, particularly type 2 (T2DM), and cancer is increasing worldwide, making these diseases growing global health problem along with increasing healthcare expenditures. The current therapeutic approach for the treatment of these multifactorial diseases is far from satisfactory. Therefore, there is still considerable interest in searching new therapeutic strategies with the use of both natural and synthetic compounds exhibiting higher efficiency and lower toxicity compared to medicines used currently in clinical practice...

The incidence of most thyroid diseases: hypothyroidism, nodular goitre, and cancer is highest among postmenopausal and elderly women. The diagnosis of thyroid dysfunction in this group of patients is difficult because the symptoms can be nonspecific or common with menopausal and ageing complaints. In the interpretation of thyroid function tests the physiological changes in secretion and metabolism of thyrotropin (TSH) and thyroid hormones must be considered, as well as the influence of comorbidities. Unrecognised thyroid dysfunction leads to increased: cardiovascular risk, bone fractures, cognitive impairment, depression, and mortality...

Vitamin A (retinol) is a micronutrient critical for cell proliferation and differentiation. In adults, vitamin A and metabolites such as retinoic acid (RA) play major roles in vision, immune and brain functions, and tissue remodelling and metabolism. This review presents the physiological interactions of retinoids and endocrine tissues and hormonal systems. Two endocrine systems have been particularly studied. In the pituitary, retinoids targets the corticotrophs with a possible therapeutic use in corticotropinomas...

PURPOSE: Ionizing radiation is implicated in nearly 2% of malignancies in the United States; radiation shields prevent unnecessary radiation exposure during medical imaging. Contemporary radiation shield utilization for adult patients in the United States is poorly defined. Therefore, we evaluated the prevalence of protective shielding utilization in adult patients undergoing computed tomography scans in United States' hospitals. METHODS: An online survey was sent to established radiology departments randomly selected from the 2015 American Hospital Association Guide...
