PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Current guidelines recommend against surgical repair of subclinical varicoceles (SCVs) for infertility; several studies demonstrate mixed fertility results after SCV correction. To determine whether surgical correction of SCV improves semen parameters and/or reproductive outcomes, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis. Seven biomedical literature databases were searched through January 2018 for studies that assessed reproductive outcomes and/or change in semen parameters in men with corrected SCV compared to either (1) uncorrected SCV or (2) corrected clinical varicocele...

Male breast cancer is an uncommon disease that constitutes 1% of all breast cancers and encapsulated papillary carcinoma (EPC) is a rare subtype of malignant male diseases. Gynecomastia is the most common disease of the male breast. We report a 63-year-old male patient with EPC accompanied by gynecomastia that was diagnosed and treated at our breast center. Mammography showed an oval-shaped dense mass with circumscribed margins on the ground of nodular gynecomastia. On ultrasonographic exam, we saw a well-circumscribed complex mass with a solid component which was vascular on Doppler ultrasonography...

The present study aimed to determine whether the expression of transient receptor potential channel 5 (TRPC5) protein is altered in spermatozoa of patients with varicocele-associated asthenozoospermia. TRPC5 expression in spermatozoa was determined by polymerase chain reaction and western blotting analyses, and indirect immunofluorescence was used for identification and immunolocalization of the TRPC5 channel in human sperm. Sperm motility and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were also determined with a computer-assisted semen analysis system and assay kit, respectively...

At present, the treatment of oligoasthenospermia with western medicine is ineffective. Qilin pill (QLP) is a Chinese traditional medicine for treating male infertility. Recent multicenter clinical studies in China reported that QLPs markedly improved sperm quality. However, the mechanism of action of QLPs on oligoasthenospermia remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the mechanistic basis for improvement of semen parameters and reversal of testis damage by QLPs in a rat model of oligoasthenospermia induced by treatment with tripterygium glycosides (TGs) (40 mg/kg) once daily for 4 weeks...

The growing patronage on herbal remedies and formulations from natural products in most developing countries has warranted research into certain health challenges including their antifertility effects. This study assessed the effects of boiled Telfairia occidentalis (TO) seed-supplemented diets on the level of testosterone and semen quality in Wistar rats. Boiled TO seed diets at 10%, 15% and 30% were given to rats for 60 days. Our study showed that sperm quality was impaired as evidenced by the decreased number of motile spermatozoa, epididymal sperm numbers, percentage live/dead ratio and increased numbers of abnormal spermatozoa comparable to control values (p < ...

HIV-1 infection is most commonly transmitted by sexual contact across mucosal surfaces. Information on concordance in drug resistance profile between blood plasma and anogenital compartments in resource-limited settings is limited. We aimed to determine discordances in genotypic drug resistance-associated mutations (DRAMs) between blood plasma and semen or rectal secretions among newly diagnosed, antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naïve, HIV-1-infected Thai men who have sex with men (MSM). Blood plasma, semen, and rectal secretions of HIV-1-infected Thai MSM enrolled from the Test and Treat cohort were tested for genotypic mutations in the reverse transcriptase and protease genes...

An essential role of prion protein testis specific (PRNT) and prion protein 2 dublet (PRND) genes in the male reproductive function has been highlighted, although a deeper knowledge for the mechanisms involved is still lacking. Our goal was to determine the importance of the PRNT haplotypic variants and mRNA expression levels in ovine spermatozoa freezability and ability for fertilization and embryo developmental processes. Their association with the PRND gene polymorphisms was also analyzed. DNA from rams belonging to three Portuguese sheep breeds (n = 28) was screened by single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis to identify the PRNT and PRND polymorphisms...

Forensic DNA Phenotyping (FDP), i.e. the prediction of human externally visible traits from DNA, has become a fast growing subfield within forensic genetics due to the intelligence information it can provide from DNA traces. FDP outcomes can help focus police investigations in search of unknown perpetrators, who are generally unidentifiable with standard DNA profiling. Therefore, we previously developed and forensically validated the IrisPlex DNA test system for eye colour prediction and the HIrisPlex system for combined eye and hair colour prediction from DNA traces...

To fertilize the egg, sperm cells must reside in the female reproductive tract for several hours during which they undergo chemical and motility changes collectively called capacitation. During capacitation, the sperm develop a unique type of motility known as hyper-activated motility (HAM). The semen contains Zn2+ in millimolar concentrations, whereas in the female reproductive tract the concentration is around 1 µM. In this study, we characterize the role of Zn2+ in human sperm capacitation focusing on its effect on HAM...
