OBJECTIVES: Despite robotic-assisted (RATS) lobectomy is on the rise in Europe, the majority of lobectomies in Germany are still performed with an open or thoracoscopic (VATS) approach. Empirical evidence in favour of RATS lobectomy is inconsistent. This retrospective cohort study investigates the impact of RATS lobectomy compared with OPEN (open thoracic surgery) and VATS lobectomy on short-term outcomes in Germany using multicentre real-world data. METHODS: Anonymized routine data from Germany from 2018 to 2020 were retrospectively analyzed...

Telomerase RNA (TR) conformation determines its function as a template for telomere synthesis and as a scaffold for the assembly of the telomerase nucleoprotein complex. Experimental analyses of TR secondary structure using MAP-Seq and SHAPE-Seq techniques show its CLOSED conformation as the consensus structure where the template region cannot perform its function. Our data show that the apparent discrepancy between experimental results and predicted TR functional conformation, mostly ignored in published studies, can be explained using data analysis based on single-molecule structure prediction from individual sequencing reads by the recently established DaVinci method...

BACKGROUND: Trans-abdominal pre-peritoneal (TAPP) hernia repair is a complex procedure that presents several challenges. Even though, due to the high prevalence of inguinal hernia, TAPP technique is increasing in frequency and robotic Abdominal Wall Surgery (rAWS) is emerging as a valuable tool in this regard. Although inguinal TAPP procedure principles have been published and simulation is needed, the availability of validated models remains scarce. METHODS: A new low-cost model was developed to simulate inguinal rTAPP repair...

Humans are universally good in providing stable and accurate judgments about what forms part of their language and what not. Large Language Models (LMs) are claimed to possess human-like language abilities; hence, they are expected to emulate this behavior by providing both stable and accurate answers, when asked whether a string of words complies with or deviates from their next-word predictions. This work tests whether stability and accuracy are showcased by GPT-3/text-davinci-002, GPT-3/text-davinci-003, and ChatGPT, using a series of judgment tasks that tap on 8 linguistic phenomena: plural attraction, anaphora, center embedding, comparatives, intrusive resumption, negative polarity items, order of adjectives, and order of adverbs...

It uses Open AI's generative pre-trained transformer 3 (GPT-3) as a case study to understand the possibilities of AI-aided communication in Palliative Care. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Open AI's GPT-3 was taken as a case study where responses were generated through the GPT-3 beta playground (Davinci engine) and were scrutinised by six mental health professionals (MHPs) working in a palliative care setting in India...

The emergence of ChatGPT has sensitized the general public, including the legal profession, to large language models' (LLMs) potential uses (e.g., document drafting, question answering, and summarization). Although recent studies have shown how well the technology performs in diverse semantic annotation tasks focused on legal texts, an influx of newer, more capable (GPT-4) or cost-effective (GPT-3.5-turbo) models requires another analysis. This paper addresses recent developments in the ability of LLMs to semantically annotate legal texts in zero-shot learning settings...

Introduction: Robotic bariatric surgery (RBS) has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, yet questions persist about its utility concerning postoperative complications, costs, and technical aspects. RBS, while increasing in number, presents a greater technical challenge associated with more post-operative complications compared to primary bariatric surgery. In this study, we present our single institution experience and review the literature to assess the value of robotic revisional surgery. Material and Method: The retrospective review involved 42 patients (31 females, 11 males) who underwent various procedures, with the most frequent being the conversion of sleeve gastrectomy to gastric bypass (n=30)...

Introduction: Automated skills assessment can provide surgical trainees with objective, personalized feedback during training. Here, we measure the efficacy of artificial intelligence (AI)-based feedback on a robotic suturing task. Materials and Methods: Forty-two participants with no robotic surgical experience were randomized to a control or feedback group and video-recorded while completing two rounds (R1 and R2) of suturing tasks on a da Vinci surgical robot. Participants were assessed on needle handling and needle driving, and feedback was provided via a visual interface after R1...

Urothelial carcinoma of the upper tract (UTUC) is a malignancy that accounts for 5-10% of all urothelial carcinomas. Radical surgery is the primary treatment option due to the high rate of invasive stages at the time of diagnosis. Nephroureterectomy (NU) with bladder cuff excision is the current standard of care. While laparoscopic NU has been established since 1991, many centres still perform open surgery due to the complexity of laparoscopic instrumentation and the steep learning curve for excising the bladder cuff...

BACKGROUND: Robot-Assisted Simple Prostatectomy (RASP) has emerged as a promising alternative in the treatment of benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). However, there is currently a lack of comparative studies evaluating different robotic platforms for performing RASP. METHODS: Forty consecutive cases of RASP performed between May 2021 and March 2023 with the HUGO™ RAS and the DaVinci® Xi at OLV Hospital (Aalst, Belgium) were included in this retrospective study...

BACKGROUND: Wilms tumor (WT) is the most frequent renal tumor in children. The SIOP-UMBRELLA Guidelines allow for nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) in syndromic patients, as well as in cases of small (<300 mL) non-syndromic unilateral WTs, without lymph node involvement, and with a substantial expected remnant renal function, following neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
