OBJECTIVES: Urine cytology is the most widely used noninvasive screening tool for urothelial carcinoma diagnosis and surveillance. Although highly specific, urine cytology exhibits suboptimal sensitivity. This study aimed to determine whether hTERT immunocytochemistry (ICC) could be applicable as an ancillary test in routine cytology practice. METHODS: A total of 561 urinary tract samples were initially screened in this study. All of them were prepared using SurePath liquid-based cytology (LBC), while additional LBC slides were made and subsequently used for hTERT (SCD-A7) ICC...

INTRODUCTION: Studies have shown that expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) in mature urothelial cells indicates an increased risk of urothelial carcinoma. We evaluated the utility of immunocytochemistry with a commercially available anti-hTERT antibody (SCD-A7) in 100 consecutive urine cytology specimens using ThinPrep processing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: ThinPrep slides prepared from 100 consecutive urine specimens were stained using anti-hTERT antibody (SCD-A7) after staining optimization had been successfully completed...

OBJECTIVES: Telomerase activity can be detected in up to 90% of urothelial carcinomas (UC). Telomerase activity can also be detected in urinary tract cytology (UTC) specimens and indicate an increased risk of UC. We evaluated the performance of a commercially available antibody that putatively binds the telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) subunit on 500 UTC specimens. STUDY DESIGN: Unstained CytospinTM preparations were created from residual urine specimens and were stained using the anti-hTERT antibody (SCD-A7)...

To reduce the volume of seaweed wastes and extract polysaccharides, seaweed-degrading bacteria were isolated from drifting macroalgae harvested along the coast of Toyama Bay, Japan. Sixty-four bacterial isolates were capable of degrading "Wakame" (Undaria pinnatifida) thallus fragments into single cell detritus (SCD) particles. Amongst these, strain 6532A was the most active degrader of thallus fragments, and was capable of degrading thallus fragments to SCD particles within a day. Although the sequence similarity of the 16S rRNA gene of strain 6532A was 100% similar to that of Microbulbifer elongatus JAMB-A7, several distinct differences were observed between strains, including motility, morphology, and utilization of D: -arabinose and gelatin...
