OBJECTIVE: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common presentation to the emergency department (ED) and has high mortality rates. The aim of our study is to investigate the risk stratification and prognostic prediction value of precalcitonin (PCT) and clinical severity scores on patients with CAP in ED. METHODS: 226 consecutive adult patients with CAP admitted in ED of a tertiary teaching hospital were enrolled. Demographic information and clinical parameters including PCT levels were analyzed...

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia due to ventilator is a prevalent nosocomial infection associated with high morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to determine the change in serum levels of precalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in response to antibiotic treatment in patients hospitalized in intense care unit (ICU) suffering from ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an analytical and descriptive study performed in 2013 in Ayatollah Kashani Medical Training Center, Isfahan, Iran...

High serum levels of the calcitonin (CT) prohormone, procalcitonin (pro-CT), and its component peptides occur in systemic inflammation and sepsis. Using two different assays, we undertook a prospective study to determine the utility of serum precalcitonin peptides (pre-CT) as markers in this condition. Twenty-nine patients meeting criteria for the systemic inflammatory response syndrome were studied daily in two intensive care units. Sera were collected, and APACHE II scores were determined until recovery or death...

The nucleotide sequence for mouse calcitonin was determined from a cDNA obtained using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based method, the rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE)-PCR. Primers designed from highly conserved regions in the coding sequences of known rat and human calcitonin cDNAs were used to amplify calcitonin cDNA as 5'-end and 3'-end fragments from mouse thyroid RNA. The obtained cDNA is 850 bp in length most probably representing the entire mouse calcitonin mRNA. It contains an open reading frame coding for a 136 amino acid protein with a calculated M(r) of 15,143...
