Introduction Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has replaced routine axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) in node-negative axillae. In cases where the axilla needs to be dissected, one must dissect below the uppermost intercostobrachial nerve (ICBN) to avoid damaging arm lymphatics. Methods One milliliter of methylene blue dye was injected around the areola. Fluorescein dye (1 ml) was injected into the upper arm. After SLNB and ALND, the axilla was visualized under blue light. The location of fluorescent lymphatics was mapped with respect to the uppermost ICBN...

ICG with other tracers can be injected pre and/or per operatively to identify the axillary Lymph Nodes (LN) draining the breast cancer (the SLN nodes) and/or the ipsilateral arm (the ARM nodes). to evaluate the impact on this temporal variable-variation on the identification of these ARM LN. Material and methods: One hundred and nine women, who were scheduled to undergo, either lumpectomy with selective lymphadenectomy (SLN), or mammary surgery (either lumpectomy, or mastectomy) with complete axillary node dissection (CALND) for a histologically proven mammary tumor, had administered the day before the surgery one subcutaneous injection of ICG in the first interdigital space of the ipsilateral hand (pre-op subgroup (SLN=28 and CALND=15), or the same day as the surgery (per op subgroup (SLN=26 and CALND= 20)...

BACKGROUND: Identification and biopsy of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) in early-stage breast cancer (T1-T2N0) has become the standard method in the surgical treatment of the axilla, due to its accuracy in the evaluation of axillary lymph node status, thus avoiding extensive axillary lymph node dissection inpatients with negative SLN. The aim of our study is to highlight the role of 99mTc-nanocolloid lymphoscintigraphy in the preoperative lymphatic mapping, especially for SLN localizations outside the axilla, as well as the benefits of this technique in the accurate staging of breast cancer...

To evaluate the potential cytogenetic heterogeneity in breast carcinoma, several small cell groups (each consisting of 20 to 50 cells) were investigated within paraffin sections. By laser-microdissection, three to seven cell groups were taken per case. The DNA was amplified by degenerate oligonucleotide primed PCR (DOP-PCR), and the samples were analyzed by CGH for chromosomal gains and losses. Two ductal invasive breast carcinomas, one of them with two lymphnode metastases, were investigated. To compare the results from the small samples, CGH was also performed on DNA isolated from the tumorous regions of three to five serial sections (10(7) to 10(6) cells)...

OBJECTIVE: Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) indicates the existence of tumor suppressor genes (TSG) in the affected chromosomal loci. In order to uncover the involvement of such genes, we analyzed LOH in different chromosomal regions of sporadic breast carcinomas. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 47 breast cancer patients were screened for LOH with microsatellite markers on 18 different loci. DNA fragments were amplified by PCR from tumor and reference tissue. The PCR products were run on 8% denaturing polyacrylamide gels and visualized by silver straining...

A simulation model of mammary lymphatics has been realized by a computerized system to draw a tridimensional map of all lymphnode stations (axillary, supraclavear and internal mammary lymphnodes) draining from the breast. The purpose was to identify the minimal routes between tumor and lymphnodes and among different nodal points that represent lymphnodes of the lymphatic net situated at various distance from tumor. A simulation of node metastatization has been performed giving to every route of the model a different weight represented by the distance between the nodes...
