Self-perceptions of own social position are potentially a key aspect of socioeconomic inequalities in health, but their association with mortality remains poorly understood. We examined whether subjective social status (SSS), a measure of the self-perceived element of social position, was associated with mortality and its role in the associations between objective socioeconomic position (SEP) measures and mortality. We used Cox regression to model the associations between SSS, objective SEP measures and mortality in a sample of 9972 people aged ≥ 50 years from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing over a 10-year follow-up (2002-2013)...

A significant proportion of patients with acute stroke symptoms have an alternative 'mimic' diagnosis. A narrative review was carried out to explore the frequency, characteristics and aetiology of stroke mimics. Prehospital and thrombolysis-treated patients were described separately. Overall, 9972 studies were identified from the initial search and 79 studies were included with a median stroke mimic rate of 19% (range: 1-64%). The prehospital median was 27% (range: 4-43%) and the thrombolysis median 10% (range: 1-25%)...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Whether the level of long noncoding RNA plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 gene (lncRNA PVT1) expression influences the clinical development and outcome of human cancers has not been thoroughly elucidated to date. Inconsistencies still exist regarding the associations between PVT1 and the clinicopathological features, including patient survival data. Additionally, the regulatory mechanism of PVT1 among human cancers remains unclear. METHODS: we conducted a comprehensive inquiry to verify the implication of PVT1 expression in cancer patients by conducting a meta-analysis of 19 selected studies and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database to examine the relationship between PVT1 expression and both the prognosis and clinicopathological features of cancer patients using STATA 12...

In the present study, a liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method with a minimal matrix effect (ME) was developed and validated for simultaneous determination of a diverse range of pesticides (49) in kiwifruit. Samples extracted by the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) citrate-buffered method were analyzed either without purification or following purification (with primary secondary amine (PSA) or PSA + graphitized carbon black (GCB)). With the addition of a clean-up step, the suppression of the ME decreased, with a higher number of pesticides determined by the application of PSA + GCB...

For the first time, a novel green method using Zein biopolymeric nanoparticles as a green dispersive solid-phase extractor is reported for the separation and preconcentration of trace amount of nitrite (NO2 - ) ions in ppb levels. The Zein protein is a biodegradable hydrophobic plant protein that is obtained from corn and is composed of a number of hydrophobic amino acids. Zein bionanoparticles were synthesized in an anti-solvent process and used as a new biosorbent in the extraction technique. In the proposed technique, by using a standard method at first, a mixture of 1-naphthylamine and sulphanilic acid as selective regents was added to the samples, and in the presence of the nitrite ion, a red azo product was formed...

We introduce software, Numericware i, to compute identical by state (IBS) matrix based on genotypic data. Calculating an IBS matrix with a large dataset requires large computer memory and takes lengthy processing time. Numericware i addresses these challenges with 2 algorithmic methods: multithreading and forward chopping. The multithreading allows computational routines to concurrently run on multiple central processing unit (CPU) processors. The forward chopping addresses memory limitation by dividing a dataset into appropriately sized subsets...

This study is to develop a GC×GC method with electron capture detection (ECD) to analyze atmospheric halocarbons in the concentration range of parts per trillion by volume (pptv). To enrich atmospheric halocarbons a home-built thermal desorption (TD) device was coupled to the GC×GC-ECD. The technique of flow modulation was adopted using a Deans switch for GC×GC. Several column combinations of first and second dimensions were tested and the column set of DB-5×TG-1301 was found to show the best orthogonality for halocarbons...

Although wrist-type photoplethysmographic (hereafter referred to as WPPG) sensor signals can measure heart rate quite conveniently, the subjects' hand movements can cause strong motion artifacts, and then the motion artifacts will heavily contaminate WPPG signals. Hence, it is challenging for us to accurately estimate heart rate from WPPG signals during intense physical activities. The WWPG method has attracted more attention thanks to the popularity of wrist-worn wearable devices. In this paper, a mixed approach called Mix-SVM is proposed, it can use multi-channel WPPG sensor signals and simultaneous acceleration signals to measurement heart rate...

α-Synuclein is the primary protein found in Lewy bodies, the protein and lipid aggregates associated with Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia. The protein folds into a uniquely long amphipathic α-helix (AH) when bound to a membrane, and at high enough concentrations, it induces large-scale remodeling of membranes (tubulation and vesiculation). By engineering a less hydrophobic variant of α-Synuclein, we previously showed that the energy associated with binding of α-Synuclein's AH correlates with the extent of membrane remodeling (Braun et al...

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported the design, pharmacological properties and imaging application of bradykinin (BK) B2 receptor (B2R) ligands conjugated with fluorophores such as fluorescein derivatives at their N-terminus. To take advantage of the high penetration of infrared light into living tissues and their low autofluorescence in this region of the spectrum, additional probes conjugated with cyanine dye 7 (Cy7) were synthesized and characterized. RESULTS: The antagonist B-9430 (D-Arg-[Hyp(3),Igl(5),D-Igl(7),Oic(8)]-BK) and the agonist B-9972 (D-Arg-[Hyp(3),Igl(5),Oic(7),Igl(8)]-BK) were N-terminally extended with the infrared fluorophore Cy7, producing the peptides B-10665 and B-10666, respectively...
