Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the two most prevalent obstructive lung diseases that account for tremendous morbidity and mortality throughout the world. These diseases have strong inflammatory components, with multiple prior studies showing elevated levels of various inflammatory markers and cells in those with COPD and asthma. The generation of diasteromerically enriched secondary benzyl propargyl alcohols by the asymmetric addition of ortho-sulfinylbenzyl carbanions to sulfonylacetylene derivatives via formation of Csp-Csp3 bond is described. This reaction proceeds through an unusual α-attack (anti-Michael addition) of the ortho-sulfinylbenzyl carbanions, followed by elimination of the arylsulfonyl moiety.
