BACKGROUND: The peripheral nerve injuries are devastating for the patient; the classic reconstructive options are the Nerve Graft and Tendon Transfers. Lately the Nerve Transfers are being used more and more broadly. They are an excellent option on early injuries and when the motor plate is still alive. The advantages are numerous, because the functional recovery is much better. METHODS AND RESULTS: We report the case of a patient who sustained and injury on the median and ulnar nerve, so the EDQ and ECU branches were used to restore the Ulnar Intrinsic Function...

BACKGROUND: Hip fractures have increased in the last decades, mainly in elderly patients with osteoporosis. The incidence becomes in some countries up to 250 thousand new cases per year, generating millions for health systems costs, so it should be considered a public health problem. They are treated in supine position, with a fracture table, through a lateral approach. However, it is important to know that there are other techniques, which can dispense a table of fractures and in a different position...

A questionnaire survey and interviews were conducted in households and end-of-life (EoL) mobile phone business centres in Hong Kong. Widespread Internet use, combined with the rapid evolution of modern social networks, has resulted in the more rapid obsolescence of mobile phones, and thus a tremendous increase in the number of obsolete phones. In 2013, the volume of EoL mobile phones generated in Hong Kong totalled at least 330 tonnes, and the amount is rising. Approximately 80% of electronic waste is exported to Africa and developing countries such as mainland China or Pakistan for recycling...

Andrew M Horwood, Nachiappan Chockalingam
Abnormal-pronation, excessive-pronation, over-pronation, or hyper-pronation, are terms with a long historical use in both medical and research terminology pertaining to an abnormal movement of the foot. These terms are commonly used as a potential kinematic aetiology to explain the occurrence of multiple lower limb and foot pathologies. Yet despite this widespread use there is no clear definition to explain what the terms abnormal, excess, over, or hyper-pronation, mean. Without a strict definition the use of these terms as a patho-mechanical explanation of injuries, leaves a distinct lack of clarity and is meaningless in regards to being able to distinguish what movement may need clinical intervention...

Introduction: Despite smoker interest in e-cigarettes as a harm reduction or cessation aid, many smokers prematurely discontinue vaping after trying a product. This study explored the role of early subjective sensory experience in vaping persistence and desistence. Methods: African American menthol cigarette smokers aged ≥18 years (n=15; M=54.1 years; SD=8.2), motivated to quit smoking, and interested in trying e-cigarettes were recruited in Washington, D.C. Participants were followed for three weeks and provided menthol cigalike e-cigarettes after week one...

Tight junctions form a barrier to the diffusion of apical and basolateral membrane proteins thus regulating membrane polarity. They also regulate the paracellular movement of ions and water across epithelial and endothelial cells so that functionally they constitute an important permselective barrier. Permselectivity at tight junctions is regulated by claudins, which confer anion or cation permeability, and tightness or leakiness, by forming several highly regulated pores within the apical tight junction complex...

This study examined sequential associations between child play and caregiver talk in 98 caregiver-child dyads (Mmental age  = 14 months). Fifty dyads included a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Analyses revealed sequential associations between child play and caregiver follow-in (FI) utterances (utterances related to the child's attentional focus) were stronger in the ASD as compared to the typically developing (TD) group. FI utterances were more likely to elicit functional play than caregiver-focused utterances, and more so in the ASD group...

DIBAL-H-mediated demethylation provides a novel entry to secondary rim functionalized γ-CD. 2A,3B-dihydroxyl-per-O-methylated-γ-cyclodextrin has been obtained, whose conjugation with C60 allows the access to the most water-soluble C60 conjugate described so far. The water-solubility 0.12 M (550 mg/mL) is 150 times higher than that of native γ-CD/ C60 complex. Its singlet oxygen (¹O₂) quantum yield is 0.39, an increase by one or two orders of magnitude compared to that of α(β)CD-C60 conjugates.

Low collagen accumulation in the extra-cellular matrix is a pressing problem in cartilage tissue engineering, leading to a low collagen-to-glycosaminoglycan (GAG) ratio and poor mechanical properties in neo-cartilage. Soluble factors have been shown to increase collagen content, but may result in a more pronounced increase in GAG content. Thyroid hormones have been reported to stimulate collagen and GAG production, but reported outcomes, including which specific collagen types are affected, are variable throughout the literature...

We report on the existence and stability of freely moving solitons in a spatially inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate with helicoidal spin-orbit (SO) coupling. In spite of the periodically varying parameters, the system allows for the existence of stable propagating solitons. Such states are found in the rotating frame, where the helicoidal SO coupling is reduced to a homogeneous one. In the absence of the Zeeman splitting, the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations describing localized states feature many properties of the integrable systems...

Histiocytic sarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm arising most commonly in lymph nodes, intestinal tract, skin and soft tissue. The incidence of primary CNS histiocytic sarcoma is even rarer with a total of just 27 cases reported in the literature so far. Herein we describe the first autopsy case of histiocytic sarcoma presenting as a diffuse leptomeningeal disease in absence of a CNS tumor-forming parenchymal lesion. The clinical, pathological and immunophenotypic features are described and an updated literature review on primary CNS histiocytic sarcoma is included...

The preparation of monolithic SiO2 with bimodal porosity using a special sol-gel procedure ("Nakanishi process") generally shows a pronounced sensitivity towards several physico-chemical parameters of the initial solution (concentrations, precursors, pH, temperature, etc.). Thus, temporal and spatial variations of these parameters during the sol-gel reactions can affect the final meso- and macropore space with respect to the pore size distributions and homogeneity. In this study we thoroughly examine the sol-gel reaction in terms of the impact of temperature accuracy and homogeneity during the gelation and their effect on meso- and macropore space...

The development of scalable sources of non-classical light is fundamental to unlocking the technological potential of quantum photonics. Semiconductor quantum dots are emerging as near-optimal sources of indistinguishable single photons. However, their performance as sources of entangled-photon pairs are still modest compared to parametric down converters. Photons emitted from conventional Stranski-Krastanov InGaAs quantum dots have shown non-optimal levels of entanglement and indistinguishability. For quantum networks, both criteria must be met simultaneously...

Ventricular septal defects are one of the most common congenital cardiac malformations in animals, and most often affect the membranous portion of the septum. These defects may rarely close spontaneously. An adult male black-tailed prairie dog ( Cynomys ludovicianus) had a smooth shiny botryoid red mass arising from the area of the septal cusp of the right atrioventricular (tricuspid) valve and membranous interventricular septum, and bulging into the right ventricular lumen. Histology and special staining demonstrated a membranous ventricular septal defect closed by the adherence of the septal cusp of the tricuspid valve to the muscular septum (so-called membranous ventricular septal aneurysm or aneurysm of the [peri]membranous ventricular septum)...
