The classification of mucinous tumors of the vermiform appendix is quite controversial, and includes a spectrum of neoplastic lesions ranging from benign proliferations, intraluminal, to invasive adenocarcinomas. Among the complications of appendicular mucinous neoplasms we should mention the "pseudomyxoma peritonei", a condition caused by cancerous cells (mucinous adenocarcinoma) that produce abundant mucin or gelationous ascites. Mucinous neoplasms of the appendix are rare diseases of unknown etiology. The diagnosis is difficult because of poorly specific clinical, biochemical and imaging parameters, and their detection can be occasional...

Lung cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer-related death worldwide in men and women, and, despite the recent remarkable scientific advances, drug treatment is still unsatisfactory. Polycomb protein chromobox homolog 7 (CBX7) is involved in several biological processes, including development and cancer progression, indeed the lack of CBX7 protein correlates with a highly malignant phenotype and a poor prognosis. However, its role in lung cancer still remains unknown. Since CBX7 is drastically downregulated in human lung carcinomas, we investigated whether restoration of CBX7 expression could affect growth property of lung cancer cells and modulate their sensitivity to treatment with irinotecan and etoposide, two chemoterapy drugs most commonly used in lung cancer therapy...

Life expectancy in patients affected by cancer has recently increased because of early diagnosis and actual therapies. In recent years, Oncology and Cardiology developed a tight relationship because of common risk factors (i.e., obesity, smoking, alcool intake, etc...), and for preventing the prothrombotic status due to cancer and the potential cardiotoxicity of chemotherapy. Cardiotoxicity incidence is reported from 1% up to 70% in retrospective analyses of drug protocols, mainly representing by left ventricular dysfunction (both reversible or irreversible), but also by arrhythmias, hypertension, atrioventricular block, coronary spasm, and arterial or venous thromboembolism...

Renal cell carcinoma accounts for 3% of all malignant tumors. Until a few years ago, immunotherapy (Interferon and/or Interleukin-2) was the only approved systemic treatment in the metastatic setting. Better knowledge of renal cell cancer biology drew attention on the fundamental role of angiogenesis. Several strategies targeting angiogenesis have been developed including VEGF and VEGFR inhibitors. They are now the standard treatment in first and second line. Pazopanib, a VEGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is one of the treatment options recommended for patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma, in first line and after cytokines failure...

There is no standard treatment for peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) from gastric cancer. New bidirectional chemotherapy (neoadjuvant intraperitoneal-systemic chemotherapy protocol (NIPS)) was developed. The aim of the present study was to assess the safety and efficacy of NIPS and to show the selection for cytoreductive surgery on PC from gastric cancer. Seventy-nine patients with PC from gastric cancer were treated with NIPS. A peritoneal port system was introduced into the abdominal cavity. The peritoneal wash cytological examination through a port was done before and after NIPS...

BACKGROUND: Locally advanced breast carcinoma represents a disease, where the combination of treatment--chemotherapy with antracycline and radiotherapy--is generally accepted as standard therapy. This management can be limited by cardiotoxicity. Cardiotoxicity is a rare complication of breast cancer treatment and the incidence and severity of cardiotoxicity are dependent on cumulative dose of antracyline, the type and combination of drugs used, the presence of coexsistin diseases (cardiac diseases, diabetes mellitus), risk faktors and use, the way of radiotherapy and combination therapy in the treatment of locally advanced breast carcinoma...

Classic Kaposi sarcoma (CKS) represents an angioproliferative disease that is originated from endothelial cells, myofibroblasts, and monocyte-macrophage cells. It occurs predominantly in elderly people, particularly men from the Mediterranean area. CKS is described as a disease with a long indolent course but frequently shows a rapid progressive evolution that necessitates systemic chemotherapy. Considering that afflicted patients are often >75 years old, the need to use a convenient treatment schedule with few side effects is evident...

Chemoterapy is one of the basic modalities of oncological therapy and usually leads to permanent consequences. Infertility is one of the most common consequences resulting from irreversible gonadal damage. The potentially effective method of reproductive function protection in women undergoing chemotherapy is ovarian tissue cryopreservation. This paper summarizes the medical and scientific knowledge in this interesting multidisciplinary medical field an also presents authors own experience with this novel and interesting method of ovarian tissue protection...

Usually head and neck cancer is treated with combined therapy, applying surgery, if possible, and then radiotherapy and chemotherapy in a sequential or concomitant way. Sequential approach seems to be preferred, because of the high toxicity rate of concomitant therapy. Platinum compounds and 5-fluorouracil are the standard drugs, but new drugs are entering therapeutic arena: gemcitabine and taxanes are the most promising ones. The efficacy of these drugs, especially in association with radiotherapy, must be assessed; moreover it is essential to ascertain how to associate these drugs to radiotherapy and to evaluate drug toxicity when combined with the latter...
