OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to compare the effectiveness and safety of carbetocin vs. oxytocin in the management of atonic post partum haemorrhage (PPH) after vaginal delivery. METHODS: A prospective randomised study was conducted in which 100 pregnant women were randomised into 2 equal groups: group 1 received Carbetocin 100 µgm (Pabal(®) Ferring, UK) and group 2 received oxytocin 5 IU (Syntocinon(®), Novartis, Switzerland). RESULTS: The amount of blood loss and the need for other uterotonics were significantly lower in the carbetocin group (811 ± 389...

Genetically engineered animal models are major tools of a drug discovery pipeline because they facilitate understanding of the molecular and biochemical basis of disease. These highly complex models of human disease often require increasingly convoluted genetic analysis. With growing needs for throughput and consistency, we find that traditional aspiration-and-dispense liquid-handling robots no longer have the required speed, quality, or reproducibility. We present an adaptation and installation of an acoustic droplet ejection (ADE) liquid-handling system for ultra-high-throughput screening of genetically engineered models...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of carbetocin in prevention of PPH in women after cesarean section. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We enrolled 60 patients who had undergone cesarean section in tertiary referential center, Department of Perinatology, Medical University of Lodz, Poland, between January and June 2008. Each patient obtained a single 100 microg dose of carbetocin intravenously during cesarean section, immediately after the delivery of the baby and prior to the delivery of the placenta...

OBJECTIVE: To identify social, behavioural and cultural factors that explain the thinness of young women relative to their men in rural Maharashtra, India. DESIGN: Twelve focus group discussions were conducted to explore the villagers' understanding of why women in their area might be thinner than men. SETTING: Pabal village and surrounding hamlets, in the Pune district of Maharashtra, India. Fifty inebriated emergency department (ED) patients underwent evacuation of gastric contents via a nasogastric tube, in order to determine if a significant amount of ingested ethanol can be removed prior to absorption. Such a result could potentially reduce additional intoxicating effect. The gastric contents were assayed for total ethanol concentration, and a potential (postabsorption) additive blood alcohol level (PABAL) was projected and compared to the actual BAL on arrival. The type of beverage ingested and the time since last drink were recorded...
