Hypocalcemia is caused by a sharp decline in blood calcium concentration after dairy cow calving, which can lead to various diseases or even death. It is necessary to develop an inexpensive, easy-to-operate, reliable sensor to diagnose hypocalcemia. The cellulose-paper-based microfluidic field-effect biosensor is promising for point-of-care, but it has poor mechanical strength and a short service life after exposure to an aqueous solution. Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS), as a popular organosilane derivative, can improve the hydrophobicity of cellulose paper to overcome the shortage of cellulose paper...

We develop an electrochemical sensor for the determination of bromhexine hydrochloride (BHC), a widely use mucolytic drug. The sensor is prepared by electrodeposition of cobalt oxides (CoOx ) on a glassy carbon electrode modified with carboxylated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). A synergistic effect between CoOx and SWCNT is observed, leading to a significant improvement in the BHC electrooxidation current. Based on cyclic voltammetry studies at varying scan rates, we conclude that the electrochemical oxidation of BHC is under mixed diffusion-adsorption control...

Achieving fast electron transfer process between oxidoreductase and electrodes is pivotal for the biocathode of enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs). However, in-depth understanding of the interplay mechanism between enzymes and electrode materials remains challenging when designing and constructing EBFCs. Herein, atomic-scale insight into the direct electron transfer (DET) behavior of Thermus thermophilus laccase (TtLac) with a special methionine-rich β-hairpin motif adsorbed on the carboxyl-functionalized carbon nanotube (COOH-CNT) and amino-functionalized carbon nanotube (NH2 -CNT) surfaces were disclosed by multi-scale molecular simulations...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are well-known for their excellent electrical conductivity. One promising application for SWCNT-based thin films is as transparent electrodes for uncooled mid-IR detectors (MIR). In this paper, a combination of computational and experimental studies were performed to understand the chemistry behind the stability of carboxylic SWCNTs (SWCNTs-COOH) dispersions in different solvents. A computational study based on the density functional tight-binding (DFTB) method was applied to understand the interactions of COOH-functionalized carbon nanotubes with selected solvents...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have received extensive research attention owing to their extraordinary optical, electrical, and mechanical properties, which make them particularly attractive for application in optoelectronic devices. However, SWCNTs are insoluble in almost all solvents. Therefore, developing methods to solubilize SWCNTs is crucial for their use in solution-based processes. In this study, we developed a photocleavable polythiophene-derivative polymer dispersant for SWCNTs. The noncovalent surface functionalization of SWCNTs with a polymer allows their dispersal in tetrahydrofuran...

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are characterized by a combination of rather unique physical and chemical properties, which makes them interesting biocompatible nanostructured materials for various applications, including in the biomedical field. SWCNTs are not inert carriers of drug molecules, as they may interact with various biological macromolecules, including ion channels. To investigate the mechanisms of the inhibitory effects of SWCNTs on the muscarinic receptor cation current (mICAT) , induced by intracellular GTPγs (200 μM), in isolated mouse ileal myocytes, we have used the patch-clamp method in the whole-cell configuration...

Firstly, single walled carbon nanotube with carboxylated acid (SWCNT-COOH) was functionalized with diethylenetriamine and a new nanocomposite was obtained using nano zinc oxide (ZnO) powder. The effects of pH (3-7), the amount of adsorbent (5-15 mg) and the initial concentration (10-50 mg L-1 ) of the solution on the adsorption uptake were investigated. Misfolding and the subsequent self-assembly of amyloid-β protein (Aβ) is very important in the occurrence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Thus, inhibition of Aβ aggregation is currently an effective method to alleviate and treat AD. Herein, a carboxylated single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT-COOH) was rationally designed based on the hydrophobic binding-electrostatic repulsion (HyBER) mechanism. The inhibitory effect of SWCNT-COOH on Aβ fibrillogenesis was first studied. Based on the results of thioflavin T fluorescence and atomic force microscopy imaging assays, it was shown that SWCNT-COOH can not only effectively inhibit Aβ aggregation, but also depolymerize the mature fibrils of Aβ...

The aim of this work is to develop a new type of carbon-ceramic membranes for the removal of pharmaceutical substances from water. The membranes were prepared by the chemical modification method using an organosilicon precursor-octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS). Graphene oxide, multi-walled carbon nanotubes with carboxylic groups, and single-walled carbon nanotubes were used in the modification process. The filtration properties and adsorption properties of the developed membranes were tested. Single-walled CNTs (SWNTs) with a few carboxylic acid groups (3-5%) and pristine multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs) were mixed in each detergent solution and sonicated with a bath-type sonicator.
