Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coatings on biomaterials are applied to tailor adhesion, growth, and function of cells on biomedical implants. Here, biogenic and synthetic polyelectrolytes (PEL) are used for layer-by-layer assembly to study the osteogenic activity of PEM with human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells in a comparative manner. In this study, we purified the polysaccharide fraction (GS-P) from the leaves of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer and analyzed its monosaccharide composition and antitumor and antimetastatic activity in vitro and in vivo. GS-P is a 10.2kDa pectic polysaccharide consisting of 15 different monosaccharides. GS-P treatment significantly inhibited metastasis in mice, in a dose-dependent manner. GS-P was not cytotoxic to colon 26-M3.1 cells and increased mouse splenocyte proliferation. In this report, the effect of the first polyelectrolyte adsorbed in a PEM was investigated by assembling PEMs with first layer polycations of different chemistries and molecular weights. A novel combined system integrating MFC and electric membrane bioreactor (EMBR) was developed, in which a quartz sand chamber (QSC) was used, replacing expensive proton exchange membrane (PEM). An air contact oxidation bed (ACOB) and embedded trickling filter (TF) with filled volcano rock, was designed to increase dissolved oxygen (DO) in cathodic EMBR to save aeration cost. Membrane fouling in EMBR was successful inhibited/reduced by the generated bioelectricity of the system. To determine age-stratified prevalence of concomitant bacterial meningitis in infants ≤ 60 days with a urinary tract infection (UTI), we performed a 23-center retrospective study of 1,737 infants with UTI. Concomitant bacterial meningitis was rare, but more common in infants 0-28 days (0.9%, 95% CI: 0.4-1.9%) compared with infants 29-60 days (0.2%, 95% CI: 0-0.8%).
