Introduction Limited studies are available for predicting mortality in patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) based on ascitic fluid analysis. Recently, a proposition has been made regarding the role of ascitic fluid lactate as a better prognostic indicator of mortality in cirrhotic patients with SBP. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the utility of ascitic fluid lactate in predicting mortality in cirrhotic patients with SBP. Methods This was a prospective, observational study that was conducted in the Hepato-Gastroenterology Department of Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), Karachi from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022...

METHODS: This was a retrospective, observational study of patients diagnosed with acute osteomyelitis. Exclusion criteria were the use of Gram-negative antibiotic therapy, use of antibiotics for more than 48 h prior to oritavancin or daptomycin or prior use of > 2 doses of oritavancin or more than 4 weeks of daptomycin...

PURPOSE: Antibiotic administration leads to alterations in pathogenic organisms and antibiotic resistance, posing a significant risk to peritoneal dialysis patients' health. This study aimed to investigate changes in the cause-specific peritonitis, pathogen profiles, antibiotic resistance, and the prognostic factors among patients with peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (PDAP) at our center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included 463 PDAP patients who attended Peking University Shenzhen Hospital between 2002 and 2023...

The pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus had a great impact on the population of patients treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD). This study demonstrates the impact of infection and vaccination in 66 patients treated with PD and their outcomes during a 6-month follow-up. This is the first research that has studied the dynamics of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG in serum and effluent. In our research, 57.6% of PD patients were vaccinated, predominantly with Sinopharm (81.6%), which was also the most frequently administered vaccine in the Republic of Serbia at the beginning of immunization...

AIM: Patients undergoing dialysis are at high risk for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Haemoglobin (Hb) levels may be changed in patients infected with the Omicron variant of COVID-19 who are undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Therefore, we aimed to explore the effect of anti-anaemia treatment on such patients. METHODS: This study enrolled patients undergoing PD who were infected with the Omicron variant of COVID-19 at our centre between November 2022 and February 2023...

Catheter-related tunnel infection may lead to peritonitis and discontinuation of performing high-quality peritoneal dialysis (PD). Tunnel infection is commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus . Gas-forming bacterial infection is rare in patients with PD and even exceedingly rare when such a infection spreads along the PD catheter tract. The first case of emphysematous PD catheter infection is presented here.

Dialysis in pediatric groups is complicated by a wide range of factors that can affect long-term prognosis. The purpose of this meta-analysis and systematic review is to better understand the demographic and clinical factors that affect dialysis success in children. We searched a variety of databases for relevant articles and included 14 reports that dealt with the case studies of pediatric patients undergoing dialysis for a wide range of renal diseases. Patients' demographics, clinical presentations, laboratory findings, and treatment outcomes were the primary areas of data collection...

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) helps prevent lethal complications of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, the clinical outcomes are affected by PD-related complications. We investigated metabolic biomarkers to estimate the clinical outcomes of PD and identify patients at high risk of downstream complications and recurrent/relapsing infections. METHODS: Metabolites of normal control and ESRD patient were compared via an untargeted metabolomic analysis. Potential metabolic biomarkers were selected and quantified using a multiple reaction monitoring-based target metabolite detection method...

Dialysis is a replacement therapy for patients with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Patients on dialysis are at high risk of acquiring hepatitis C virus (HCV), which has become a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in this population. There is a wide range of prevalence of HCV in dialysis populations around the world. It is still unknown how prevalent HCV infection is among worldwide dialysis patients (including those undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis). A review was conducted to estimate the global epidemiology of hepatitis C in dialysis patients...

Peritonitis is the major complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Staphylococcus is the leading causative organism of PD-related peritonitis. However, there were more reports of unusual organisms causing peritonitis. Clinical features, management, and outcome of peritonitis from unusual organisms are important information. BACKGROUND Peritonitis is a complication associated with peritoneal dialysis (PD), which carries a significant morbidity and mortality risk. Empiric therapy must include coverage of gram-positive organisms; vancomycin is a recommended treatment option, particularly when MRSA infection is a risk. Vancomycin is cumbersome for patients, requiring therapeutic drug monitoring and re-administration by a healthcare provider. Dalbavancin, administered as a one-time intravenous dose, is a convenient potential treatment option for PD patients to cover gram-positive organisms without the need for routine drug monitoring...

INTRODUCTION: Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP), commonly known as abdominal cocoon syndrome (ACS), is considered one of the rare causes of bowel obstruction [1]. CASE PRESENTATION: In this article, we report the case of a 20-year-old male patient with a 6-month history of recurrent colicky right-sided upper abdominal pain accompanied by nausea, vomiting and bloating, which gradually increased in severity and frequency. The contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography suggested a small bowel obstruction with a differential diagnosis of SEP...

BACKGROUND: Reports on COVID-19 in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients are scarce in China. This study aimed to describe the characteristics and outcomes of PD patients with COVID-19 after China abandoned the 'zero-COVID' policy. METHODS: This single-centre retrospective study included patients receiving PD who underwent testing for COVID-19 infections between 7 December 2022 and 7 January 2023. Outcomes of interest included factors associated with positive COVID-19 testing result and clinical outcomes including COVID-19-related hospitalisation and severe COVID-19, which were analysed using logistic regression analyses...

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Hospital admissions in pediatric dialysis patients need to be better studied, and most existing studies are retrospective and based on registry data. This study aimed to analyse and compare hospital admission rates, causes, length of stay (LOS), and outcomes in children treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD).
