This study introduces a paradigm-shifting approach to optimize mitochondrial targeting. Employing a new fluorescent probe strategy, we unravel a combined influence of both Nernst potential ( Ψ ) and partitioning ( P ) contributions. Through the synthesis of new benz[ e ]indolinium-derived probes, our findings redefine the landscape of mitochondrial localization by optimizing the efficacy of mitochondrial probe retention in primary cortical neurons undergoing normoxia and oxygen-glucose deprivation. This methodology not only advances our understanding of subcellular dynamics, but also holds promise for transformative applications in biomedical research and therapeutic development...

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials have a range of applications due to their unique properties. Their application in agriculture brings alternatives for the controlled release of nutrients in the soil, the seed coating, the transport of herbicides, and the treatment of plant diseases. The present study aimed to investigate the use of fungicides incorporated into hybrid membranes formed by synthetic hectorite (LAPONITE®) and polymers in the pre-treatment of garlic bulbils exposed to the pathogen Stromatinia cepivora , which causes white rot...

Conventional photosensitizers (PSs) used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) have shown preliminary success; however, they are often associated with several limitations including potential dark toxicity in healthy tissues, limited efficacy under acidic and hypoxic conditions, suboptimal fluorescence imaging capabilities, and nonspecific targeting during treatment. In response to these challenges, we developed a heavy-atom-free PS, denoted as Cz-SB , by incorporating ethyl carbazole into a thiophene-fused BODIPY core...

The stereoselective 5- endo -trig oxygenative cyclization of α,β-unsaturated oximes was achieved using molecular oxygen (O2 ) and a manganese catalyst. Several 4-hydroxy-4,5-dihydroisoxazoles were obtained in high yields by directly incorporating O2 from the atmosphere (eliminating the necessity for a pure oxygen environment) and using an unprecedentedly low loading of Mn(acac)3 (as little as 0.020 mol %) without additional additives. Because of its desirable features, such as operational simplicity, inexpensive catalyst, mild reaction conditions (open flask conditions at room temperature), and broad substrate compatibility, this novel reaction provides an attractive synthetic approach to producing 4-hydroxy-4,5-dihydroisoxazoles...

A photoredox-based oxidative heterocoupling of enolsilanes to the corresponding 1,4- and 1,6-dicarbonyl compounds was developed by using Mes-Acr+ BF4 - as the photocatalyst, and oxygen was used as the oxidant. This newly developed chemistry adheres to the principles of atom economy, step economy, and redox economy, making it a concise and efficient method.

Alkali metal-air batteries (AMABs) promise ultrahigh gravimetric energy densities, while the inherent poor cycle stability hinders their practical application. To address this challenge, most previous efforts were devoted to advancing the air cathodes with high electrocatalytic activity. Recent studies have underlined the solid-liquid-gas triple-phase interface around the anode can play far more significant roles than previously acknowledged by the scientific community. Besides the bottlenecks of uncontrollable dendrite growth and gas evolution in conventional alkali metal batteries, the corrosive atmospheric gases, intermediate oxygen species, and redox mediators in AMABs cause more severe anode corrosion and structural collapse, posing greater challenges to the stabilization of the anode triple-phase interface...

In the last few decades, massive effort has been expended in heterogeneous catalysis to develop new materials presenting high conversion, selectivity, and stability even under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. In this context, CO2 hydrogenation is an interesting reaction where the catalyst local structure is strongly related to the development of an active and stable material under hydrothermal conditions at T / P > 300 °C/30 bar. In order to clarify the relationship between catalyst local ordering and its activity/stability, we herein report a combined laboratory and synchrotron investigation of aliovalent element (Ce/Zn/Ga)-containing ZrO2 matrixes...

Neuronal death resulting from ischemic stroke is the primary cause of adult mortality and disability, and effective neuroprotective agents for poststroke intervention are still lacking. Remote ischemic postconditioning (RIPostC) has demonstrated significant protective effects against ischemia in various organs; however, the specific mechanisms are not fully understood. This study investigated the potential neuroprotective mechanisms of RIPostC in the context of ischemic stroke. Using a rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion, we found that RIPostC mitigated neurological damage, improved movement in the open-field test, and protected against neuronal apoptosis...

Breakdown of chlorophyll (Chl), as studied in angiosperms, follows the pheophorbide a oxygenase/phyllobilin (PaO/PB) pathway, furnishing linear tetrapyrroles, named phyllobilins (PBs). In an investigation with fern leaves we have discovered iso-phyllobilanones (iPBs) with an intriguingly rearranged and oxidized carbon skeleton. We report here a key second group of iPBs from the fern and on their structure analysis. Previously, these additional Chl-catabolites escaped their characterization, since they exist in aqueous media as mixtures of equilibrating isomers...

Peracetic acid (PAA) oxidation catalyzed by metal-free carbons is promising for advanced water decontamination. Nevertheless, developing reaction-oriented and high-performance carbocatalysts has been limited by the ambiguous understanding of the intrinsic relationship between carbon chemical/molecular structure and PAA transformation behavior. Herein, we comprehensively investigated the PAA activation using a family of well-defined sp2 /sp3 carbon hybrids from annealed nanodiamonds (ANDs). The activity of ANDs displays a volcano-type trend, with respect to the sp2 /sp3 ratio...

The aim of the current study is to investigate the antioxidant effects of N -acetylcysteine (NAC) during rooster semen cryopreservation. Semen samples were collected from ten Ross 308 broiler breeder roosters (32 weeks) and mixed. This investigation presented the benefits of incorporating a perfluorocarbon nanoemulsion (PPP NE) into a silk-fibroin (SF)-based hydrogel. By stimulating the β-sheet conformation of the SF chains, PPP NEs drastically shortened the gelation time while augmenting the elasticity, mechanical stability, and viscosity of the hydrogel...

Biorefining of lignocellulosic biomass via a lignin first approach delivers a range of products with high oxygen content. Besides pulp, a lignin oil rich in guaiacols and syringols is obtained bearing multiple C(aryl)-OH and C(aryl)-OMe groups, typically named phenolics. Similarly, technical lignin can be used but is generally more difficult to process providing lower yields of monomers. Removal of the hydroxy and methoxy groups in these oxygenated arenes is challenging due to the inherently strong C-O bonds, in addition to the steric and electronic deactivation by adjacent -OH or -OMe groups...
