UNLABELLED: Paragonimiasis contributes to significant foodborne zoonosis worldwide. The major mode of transmission in humans is by consumption of uncooked or undercooked crabs and crayfish harbouring Paragonimus metacercariae. It begins with symptoms like fever and lower respiratory involvement from a few months to a year, mimicking those of tuberculosis and leading to diagnostic delay. Here, we report two cases of paragonimiasis during a period of nine months. Both cases presented with symptoms of productive cough with rusty sputum, chest pain, along with eosinophilia, and pleural effusion and had a history of consumption of smoked crab from the local river...

Parasite infection rates estimated by examining ancient coprolites can provide insights into parasitism in Joseon society. Using newly discovered Joseon period cases is essential to regularly update the parasite infection rates and reinforce the reliability of our previous estimations. In the present study, we investigated parasite infections in Joseon coprolites newly isolated from the cities of Euijeongbu, Gumi, and Wonju. We then updated the overall parasite infection rates of Joseon period samples (n= 30) as follows: 86...

The Paragonimus westermani infection is a parasitic foodborne infection that induces systemic symptoms with eosinophilia in humans. Here, we described pneumothorax in addition to pulmonary opacities with eosinophilia in a man with a positive P. westermani serology. He was misdiagnosed with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia (CEP) during the initial phase. Paragonimiasis can share similar clinical findings with CEP in cases where the worm is confined to the lungs. The findings of the current study suggest that paragonimiasis and CEP can be distinguished from each other by the presence of various symptoms...

The complete mitogenome (mtDNA) of nominal Paragonimus iloktsuenensis (Paragonimidae: Trematoda) and the nuclear ribosomal transcription unit (rTU) coding region (rTU*: from 5'-terminus of 18S to 3'-terminus of 28S rRNA gene, excluding the external spacer region) of this species and of P. ohirai were obtained and used to further support the previously suggested synonymy of these taxa in the P. ohirai complex. The complete mitogenome of P. iloktsuenensis was 14,827 bp long (GenBank: ON961029) and nearly identical to that of P...

Paragonimiasis is a zoonosis caused by the ingestion of raw or undercooked crustaceans parasitized with metacercaria of Paragonimus spp . In Peru, Cajamarca is considered an endemic region for paragonimiasis. A 29-year-old man from the department of San Martín, Peru presented with a three-year history of cough, chest pain, fever, and hemoptysis. Treatment for tuberculosis (TB) was initiated even with negative results for sputum acid-fast bacillus (AFB), due to the patient's clinical characteristics and the high prevalence of the condition in the region...

OBJECTIVE: To establish the method for extracting exogenous short DNA fragments of Schistosoma japonicum from urine samples, and to evaluate the efficiency of this method for extraction from urine samples treated with various methods. METHODS: The S. japonicum SjG28 gene fragment was selected as a target sequence, and the 81 bp short DNA fragment was amplified on the target sequence using PCR assay. Following characterization using sequencing, the short DNA fragment was added into the urine samples as an exogenous short DNA fragment...

The species, Paragonimus kellicotti , causes human paragonimiasis in North America. As a foodborne disease, human infection with P. kellicotti occurs after eating raw or undercooked crayfish containing metacercariae. Many risk factors have been described in the literature, including young adult age, male, alcohol consumption, outdoor activities involving rivers within Missouri, and ingesting raw or partially cooked crayfish. Here, we report a case of a 41-year-old male with a 5-year history of cough who presented with acute shortness of breath...

A 6-year-old castrated male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was referred to the Animal Medical Center, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, for examination and treatment of recurrent pneumothorax. Chest radiography and computed tomography showed multiple cavitary lesions in the caudal right posterior lobe. These lesions were surgically excised via thoracotomy. Subsequent histopathological examination revealed paragonimiasis. In the postoperative review, we found that the owner had fed raw deer meat to the dog four months earlier...

BACKGROUND: Foodborne trematodiases (FBTs) are a group of trematodes targeted for control as part of the World Health Organization (WHO) road map for neglected tropical diseases from 2021 to 2030. Disease mapping; surveillance; and capacity, awareness, and advocacy building are critical to reach the 2030 targets. This review aims to synthesise available data on FBT prevalence, risk factors, prevention, testing, and treatment. METHODS: We searched the scientific literature and extracted prevalence data as well as qualitative data on the geographical and sociocultural risk factors associated with infection, preventive/protective factors, and methods and challenges of diagnostics and treatment...

Paragonimiasis is a food-born zoonotic parasitosis caused by Paragonimus spp. Six cases of reemerging paragonimiasis within the Karan hill-tribe near the Thai-Myanmar border were evaluated to review clinical manifestations, predisposing factors, and treatment regimens. All patients tested positive for paragonimiasis eggs and presented with an array of symptoms, including chronic cough, hemoptysis, peripheral eosinophilia, and thoracic radiograph abnormalities. All fully recovered after a 2- to 5-day course of 75 to 80 mg/kg/day praziquantel...

Some paragonimiasis patients in Chongqing, southwest China, have recently exhibited pleural effusions (PEs) with massive viscous secretions. This study aimed to investigate their clinical characteristics, thereby promoting effective treatments. A 3-year retrospective review of paragonimiasis patients who were admitted for nonhomogeneous PEs at Chongqing University Three Gorges Hospital was conducted. Epidemiological data, symptoms, laboratory and imaging findings, treatments, and outcomes were analyzed. Twenty-eight patients were identified, of which 22 (78...

Zoonotic infections, which are transmitted from animals to humans, have been a substantial source of human disease since antiquity. As the human population continues to grow and human influence on the planet expands, humans frequently encounter both domestic and wild animals. This has only increased as deforestation, urbanization, agriculture, habitat fragmentation, outdoor recreation, and international travel evolve in modern society, all of which have resulted in the emergence and reemergence of zoonotic infections...

Paragonimiasis caused by trematodes belonging to the genus Paragonimus is often accompanied by chronic respiratory symptoms such as cough, the accumulation of sputum, hemoptysis, and chest pain. Prolonged symptoms, including respiratory symptoms, after coronavirus disease 2019 infection (COVID-19) are collectively called post-COVID-19 conditions. Paragonimiasis and COVID-19 may cause similar respiratory symptoms. We encountered five cases of paragonimiasis in patients in Japan for whom diagnoses were delayed due to the initial characterization of the respiratory symptoms as a post-COVID-19 condition...

We report a case of pulmonary paragonimiasis diagnosed by transbronchial lung cyobiopsy (TBLC). TBLC is likely to be a superior method to transbronchial forceps biopsy because TBLC can get larger specimens resulting in a higher chance of containing the eggs. A 57-year-old male presented with hemoptysis and dyspnea on exertion. His initial chest computed tomography (CT) scans showed a cavitary nodule with a peripheral ground glass appearance, leading to a prescription of an oral antibiotic with an initial assumption of pneumonia...

Infections with the lung fluke, Paragonimus kellicotti, have been diagnosed in a variety of domestic and wild animals and humans in USA and Canada. Although there are many species of Paragonimus in other parts of the world; P. kellicotti is the only species definitively diagnosed in USA and Canada. Fresh water snails (several species) and crayfish (mainly Orconectes spp.) are its intermediate hosts. Humans and animals become infected with P. kellicotti only by ingesting metacercariae encysted in the heart of crayfish...
