BACKGROUND: Benralizumab is a humanised, anti-interleukin 5 receptor α monoclonal antibody that directly and rapidly depletes eosinophils, reduces asthma exacerbations, and improves lung function for patients with severe eosinophilic asthma. The objective of this trial was to assess the safety and efficacy of benralizumab for patients with mild to moderate, persistent asthma. METHODS: In this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial, we recruited patients aged 18-75 years, weighing at least 40 kg, and with a postbronchodilator reversibility in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) of at least 12% at screening, from 52 clinical research centres in six countries...

Communication, both verbal and nonverbal, between healthcare providers and patients has been shown to affect treatment outcomes in clinical settings. Separately, accumulating research suggests a role for response expectations in altering treatment outcomes, especially in the context of inert or placebo treatment. However, few studies have examined which aspects of patient-provider communication strengthen expectations, leading to better treatment outcomes. The goal of this study is to test the effect of both verbal and nonverbal aspects of communication on response expectations and treatment outcomes in the context of a placebo exercise program...

BACKGROUND: The use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) has been associated with the development of bradykinin-mediated angioedema. With ever-widening indications for ACEI in diseases including hypertension, congestive heart failure and diabetic nephropathy, a concomitant increase in ACEI-Angioedema (ACEI-A) has been reported. At present there is no validated severity scoring or discharge criteria for ACEI-A. We sought to develop and validate an investigator rating scale with corresponding discharge criteria using clinicians experienced in treating ACEI-A...

In the last 20 years, neonatal survival has progressively increased due to the constant amelioration of neonatal medical treatment and surgical techniques. Thus, the number of children with congenital malformations and severe chronic pathologies who need rehabilitative care has progressively increased. Rehabilitation programs for paediatric patients with disorders of voice, speech and language, communication and hearing, deglutition and breathing are not widely available in hospital settings or in long-term care facilities...

Glottal insufficiency (GI) is a cause of breathy voice that can profoundly affect quality of voice. Main causes are unilateral vocal fold paralysis or endoscopic cordectomy for the early treatment of laryngeal cancer of the glottis. The main strategy in surgical treatment is type I medialization thyroplasty according to Isshiki with the use of implants e.g. silastic, hydroxyapatite, titanium, Gore-Tex or Montgomery. Other procedures are arytenoid adduction, the injection laryngoplasty via thyrohyoid and cricothyroid approach and laryngeal reinnervation...

OBJECTIVES: The voice range profile (VRP) measures vocal intensity and fundamental frequency. Phonosurgical and logopedic treatment outcome studies using the VRP report voice improvements of 3-6 semitones (ST) in ST range and 4-7 decibels (dB) in sound pressure level range after treatment. These small improvements stress the importance of reliable measurements. The aim was to evaluate the test-retest reliability of the dual-microphone computerized VRP on participants with healthy voices...

Paediatric actinomycosis is an infrequent infectious disease caused by Actinomyces spp. Cervicofacial infections are usually related to disruption in oral mucosal membranes. We discuss the case of a 15-year-old girl who refers an 8-month history of odynophagia and changes in her tone of voice after getting a tongue piercing. She received multiple antibiotic treatments with slight improvement. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma was diagnosed by endoscopic biopsy. The patient was referred to our Hospital for treatment but, when the biopsy was analyzed again, oncological pathology was excluded and oropharyngeal actinomycosis was diagnosed...
