BACKGROUND: Toe grip strength is the force of a toe on a surface. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between falls in middle-aged individuals and physical strength factors such as toe grip strength and knee extension strength. METHODS: The subjects were 194 middle-aged individuals (388 feet) who were independent in daily life, received no nursing care, and participated in a health sports event organized by a sports club. We evaluated the body composition, blood pressure, vascular age, systemic response, bone density, knee extension strength, and toe grip strength, and examined their relationship using a self-administered questionnaire survey...

The goal of this study was to develop an electroanalytical method for the simultaneous determination of steroid hormones for the first time. The key factor in the electrochemical methods is the choice of suitable electrode materials. For this purpose, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) doped poly(sulfosalicylic acid) (PSSA) was immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Apart from exhibition strong and stable electrocatalytic response towards estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4), the proposed sensor was able to distinguish two hormone's oxidation peaks clearly...

This paper reports novel imidazole fluorescent poly(ionic liquid) nanoparticles (FPILNs) of poly(1-[(4-methyphenyl)methyl]-3-vinyl-imidazolium bromide (poly([MVI]Br) for selective and sensitive determination of pyrogallol. An imidazole ionic liquid of 1-[(4-methyphenyl)methyl]-3-vinyl-imidazolium bromide ([MVI]Br) was synthesized and used as the only monomer to obtain poly([MVI]Br) possessing phenyl fluorophores using a radical polymerization technique. The obtained poly([MVI]Br) can form nanoparticles in water...

Soil enzyme activity during different years of reclamation and land use patterns could indicate changes in soil quality. The objective of this research is to explore the dynamics of 5 soil enzyme activities (dehydrogenase, amylase, urease, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase) involved in C, N, and P cycling and their responses to changes in soil physicochemical properties resulting from long-term reclamation of coastal saline soil. Soil samples from a total of 55 sites were collected from a coastal reclamation area with different years of reclamation (0, 7, 32, 40, 63a) in this study...

The main aim of this study is to investigate the underlying relationship shared between microRNA-200a (miR-200a) and its link to concentrations of Th17 and Treg cells, mRNA expressions of their specific transcription factors retinoic acid-related orphan receptor γt (RORγt) and head box protein 3 (FOXP3) and relevant cytokines in patients with psoriasis vulgaris (PV). A total of 189 patients previously diagnosed with PV were selected as the experimental group, whilst 109 healthy individuals as the control group...

Phenolic compounds are among the endocrine disruptors which are widely used in daily life products. Studies in laboratory animals showed reproductive and developmental effects. In spite of widespread exposure to phenols, only few studies examined their effects on human development. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between antenatal phenol exposure and birth outcomes in a Chinese obstetric population. Four hundred ninety-six mother-infant pairs recruited from the Laizhou Wan prospective birth cohort in northern China between 2010 and 2013 were included in the study...

The risk assessment code (RAC) is a common method for assessing heavy metal (HM) mobility and their potential health risks, based on HM total concentration and chemical speciation. In this study, both the RAC and the influence of ambient environmental factors were investigated in a river sediment system. Sixty-eight sediment samples were collected from the main river system in Shanghai, China. The total concentration and chemical speciation of Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr, As, and Hg were determined in the samples...

microRNA-125b (miR-125b) has been reported to be increased in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the role of miR-125b in RA remains to be fully elucidated. We aimed to explore the functional role of miR-125b in RA, as well as the underlying mechanism. The expression of miR-125b in serum and synovial tissues of patients with RA and healthy controls was confirmed. In addition, the levels of miR-125b in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) were also measured. FLS were transfected with miR-125b mimic, antisense oligonucleotides (ASO)-miR-125b, pcDNA-inhibitor of NF-κB (IκB)-α or corresponding controls, and then stimulated with LPS or incubated with nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) inhibitors pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC)...

We modelled the effects of past and expected future changes in climate (temperature, precipitation), CO2 concentration, nitrogen deposition (N) and ozone (O3) exposure (phytotoxic ozone dose, POD) on carbon (C) sequestration by European forest ecosystems for the period 1900-2050. Tree C sequestration was assessed by using empirical response functions, while soil C sequestration was simulated with the process-based model VSD, combined with the RothC model. We evaluated two empirical growth responses to N deposition (linear and non-linear) and two O3 exposure relationships (linear function with total biomass or net annual increment)...

Previous studies have demonstrated associations of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), a group of highly persistent chemicals ubiquitous in wildlife and humans, with hypertension, but the relationships are mixed. Furthermore, academic literature on the relationship between isomers of PFASs and blood pressure (BP) and hypertension in populations from a higher pollution area is scant. We studied 1612 Chinese adults, ages 22-96years old, from Shenyang, China, utilizing high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze isomers of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), and other PFASs in blood serum...

Aqueous phase diffusion-related isotope fractionation (DRIF) was investigated through modelling to determine under what subsurface conditions carbon isotope DRIF effects would be observable using typical sampling approaches. A dispersive enrichment factor was defined based on heavy and light isotopologue dispersion coefficients. For a given ratio of source concentration (C0) to method detection limit (MDL), the maximum DRIF in a system increased linearly with transverse dispersive enrichment factor. Using this linear relationship, the critical dispersion enrichment factor for which DRIF would not be observable was quantified...

Fine Particulate Matter (PM(2.5)-particles with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm) can penetrate deeply into the lung, deposit in the alveoli, and consequently impair lung function. Both short term and long term exposures to PM(2.5) are associated with the incidence of respiratory diseases (e.g. asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer). This paper summarizes the effects of ambient air PM(2.5) exposure on human respiratory system revealed by epidemiological studies.
