L Nivethitha, A Mooventhan, N K Manjunath
Cardiovascular functions are controlled by neural factors, temperature, hormones, etc., Of these, neural factors primarily concern the autonomic nervous system, which plays a major role in maintaining and regulating cardiac functions, e.g., blood pressure and heart rate. Prāṇāyāma is one of the most important yogic practices. There are various review articles on Yoga and its effects but, though Prāṇāyāma is a part of yoga, there is lack of review articles. To the best of our knowledge there is no known review article on effect of various Prāṇāyāma on cardiovascular and autonomic variables...

BACKGROUND: Bead based flow cytometry and Luminex play a major role in identification of alloantibodies in renal transplant work-up. Strong sensitization events may lead to prozone phenomenon that can affect single antigen bead (SAB) assay and result in false negativity. However, this can also be due to high titer of other blocking antibodies. While methods like, heat inactivation, C1 inhibitor, Ethylene diamine tetra-acetic-acid and Dithio threitol treatment can remove interfering antibodies of complement and IgM, these methods are not optimal if false negativity is due to prozone effect, which is high titer of antibodies alone...

OBJECTIVES: Age-related changes in the expression of hormonal receptors have not been well examined in the fallopian tube (FT). We herein report the effect of menopause on the hormone receptors in ampullae of the FTs (AFTs), in comparison with cortical inclusion cysts (CICs) of the ovary. METHODS: A total of 84 AFTs and 16 fimbriae of FTs, which were obtained from 26 premenopausal and 58 postmenopausal women; and 27 postmenopausal CICs were immunohistochemically studied for the expression of p53, Ki-67, estrogen receptor-alpha (ER-α), and progesterone receptor A (PRA)...

The impact of disease related changes in the extracellular matrix (ECM) on the mechanical properties of human resistance arteries largely remains to be established. Resistance arteries from both pig and human parietal pericardium (PRA) display a different ECM microarchitecture compared to frequently used rodent mesenteric arteries. We hypothesized that the biaxial mechanics of PRA mirror pressure induced changes in the ECM microarchitecture. This was tested using isolated pig PRA as model system, integrating vital imaging, pressure myography and mathematical modeling...

Endometriosis is an inflammatory disease and nuclear receptors play a crucial role in mediating the inflammatory response. In endometrial stromal cells (ESC), nuclear receptors expression can be influenced by the local environment. Progestins are first-line, on-label treatments of endometriosis that may have direct effects on endometriotic lesions through these nuclear receptors. Therefore, we investigated whether there was an association between nuclear receptors expression and the influence of progestins on inflammatory cytokines production in a preliminary, in vitro study with primary cultures...

BACKGROUND: Pediatric primary hypertension (HTN) is increasingly recognized, but the effect of patient characteristics such as obesity and race on treatment outcomes is not well described. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) may also contribute to HTN. We hypothesized patient parameters of these factors, including baseline RAAS, influence blood pressure (BP) response to pharmacological treatment in HTN. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort of 102 consecutive patients with HTN...

Recently, the effectiveness of renal sympathetic nerve denervation for treatment of hypertension has been doubted after SYMPLICITY HTN-3 trial. An ideal animal model is still unavailable for preclinical study about catheter-based renal sympathetic nerve denervation for treatment of hypertension. Traditional high-dose deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-induced hypertension pig model has some problems due to extensive end-organ damage. Based on the similarity in the anatomic characteristics of renal artery between pigs and humans, this study was undertaken to establish a low-dose sustained-release DOCA-induced hypertension model in pigs...

The current study proposes a flexible approach to studying informant discrepancies: Latent Difference Scores modeling (LDS). The LDS approach is demonstrated using an empirical example in which associations between mother-adolescent and father-adolescent discrepant parenting perceptions, and concurrent and later adolescent externalizing behaviors, were investigated. Early adolescents (N = 477, aged 12-15 years), mothers (N = 470), and fathers (N = 440) filled out questionnaires about mothers' and fathers' parenting...

Background: Plasma aldosterone/renin ratio (ARR) is the most popular screening test for primary aldosteronism (PA). Because both estrogen and progesterone (including in oral contraceptive agents) affect aldosterone and renin levels, we studied effects of combined hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) on ARR, measuring renin as both direct renin concentration (DRC) and plasma renin activity (PRA). Methods: Fifteen normotensive, healthy postmenopausal women underwent measurement (seated, midmorning) of plasma aldosterone, DRC, PRA, electrolytes and creatinine and urinary aldosterone, cortisol, electrolytes and creatinine at baseline and after 2 weeks and 6 weeks treatment with combined HRT (conjugated oestrogens 0...

OBJECTIVE: For evaluation of primary aldosteronism, international guidelines recommend a 4-6 week withdrawal of spironolactone, eplerenone, and amiloride prior to adrenal vein sampling (AVS). It is not always feasible to withdraw these drugs in patients with severe hypertension and hypokalemia. We present our experience evaluating the efficacy and clinical outcomes of a 2-week protocol for withdrawal of renin-stimulating antihypertensives prior to AVS. DESIGN: A single-center retrospective review of all patients who underwent AVS for primary aldosteronism between January 2014 and December 2015...

Background: Compelling evidence shows that progestins regulate breast cancer growth. Using preclinical models, we demonstrated that antiprogestins are inhibitory when the level of progesterone receptor isoform A (PR-A) is higher than that of isoform B (PR-B) and that they might stimulate growth when PR-B is predominant. The aims of this study were to investigate ex vivo responses to mifepristone (MFP) in breast carcinomas with different PR isoform ratios and to examine their clinical and molecular characteristics...

Introduction Mean systemic filling pressure (Pms) defines the pressure measured in the venous-arterial system when the cardiac output is nil. Its estimation has been proposed in patients with beating hearts by building the venous return curve, using different pairs of right atrial pressure/cardiac output during mechanical ventilation. We raised the hypothesis according to which the Pms is altered by tidal ventilation and PEEP, which would challenge this extrapolation method based on cardiopulmonary interactions...

Compatible pairs of living kidney donors and their intended recipients can enter into kidney paired donation (KPD) and facilitate additional living donor kidney transplants (LDKTs). We examined 11 compatible pairs (the intended recipients and their intended, compatible donors) who participated in KPD, along with the recipients' 11 matched, exchange donors. The 11 pairs participated in 10 separate exchanges (three were multicenter exchanges) that included 33 total LDKTs (22 additional LDKTs). All the intended donors were blood group O and female, with a mean living kidney donor profile index (LKDPI) of 27...
