Implications Emissions from motor vehicles can contribute considerably to the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The use of biodiesel to replace or augment diesel can not only decrease our dependency on fossil fuels but also help decrease air pollution. Thus, different sources of feedstocks are constantly being explored for affordable biodiesel production. However, the amount of CO, CO2 and/or NOx emissions can vary largely depending on type of feedstock used to produce biodiesel. In this work we demonstrated animal fat feasibility in replacing petrodiesel with less impact regarding greenhouse gas emissions than other sources...

This work is focused on the optimization of the ultrasound-assisted extraction of antioxidant compounds with photoprotective effect from palm pressed fiber. The influence of ultrasound intensity and pulse cycle was investigated by means of a central composite rotational design. The optimized condition was ultrasound intensity of 120W.cm(-2) and pulse factor of 0.4, yielding 3.24wt%. Compounds such as fatty acids, β-sitosterol, α-tocopherol, squalene, total phenolics and carotene were identified. The extract presented antioxidant activity towards synthetic (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl - DPPH, 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) - ABTS) and biological radicals (Hydroxyl - OH), besides a sun protection factor of 15...

Prostate tumours are highly variable in their response to therapies, but clinically available prognostic factors can explain only a fraction of this heterogeneity. Here we analysed 200 whole-genome sequences and 277 additional whole-exome sequences from localized, non-indolent prostate tumours with similar clinical risk profiles, and carried out RNA and methylation analyses in a subset. These tumours had a paucity of clinically actionable single nucleotide variants, unlike those seen in metastatic disease. Rather, a significant proportion of tumours harboured recurrent non-coding aberrations, large-scale genomic rearrangements, and alterations in which an inversion repressed transcription within its boundaries...

OBJECTIVE: Disruption of vitamin D signaling in rodents causes activation of the rennin-angiotensin system (RAS) and development of hypertension. Observational studies in humans found lower circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is associated with increased RAS activity and blood pressure (BP). We performed the first randomized control trial to investigate the effects of vitamin D supplementation on the RAS in humans. METHODS: Vitamin D deficient, [25(OH)D ≤20 ng/ml), overweight individuals without hypertension were randomized into a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 8-weeks treatment with ergocalciferol or placebo...

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is the gold standard for the surgical treatment of benign adrenal masses. It is most commonly performed using the lateral transperitoneal approach (LTA) and the posterior retroperitoneal approach (PRA). The choice of the method depends on contraindications for a particular approach in an individual case and surgical experience. The objective of the article is to compare two approaches, LTA and PRA, in view of our own experience and literature review...

Early risk stratification of mortality and dependence is important for guiding medical decision-making in stroke care. The study aim is to evaluate whether there are any differences between risk factors for in-hospital mortality and dependence at discharge in patients with first-episode ischemic stroke in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) receiving intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) treatment. The study comprised a single-center cohort of patients admitted consecutively for first-episode MCA ischemic stroke. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the variables associated with in-hospital mortality and dependence at discharge...

There has been increased interest in conducting human absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) studies with low doses (up to 0.1 MBq) as opposed to regular doses (1.85-3.7 MBq) of radiocarbon ((14) C). This is due to the fact that low-dose human ADME studies may be conducted without dosimetry calculations and will lead to lower human radiation exposure. Here, we sought to compare the outcomes of low-dose versus regular-dose human ADME studies in healthy volunteers. Forty oral human ADME studies conducted at PRA were surveyed, among which 12 were low-dose studies...

BACKGROUND: Panel reactive antibody (PRA) reduction protocols are used to decrease anti-HLA antibodies with concomitant PRA monitoring as a measure of successful treatment prior to organ and haploidentical blood and marrow transplant (BMT). We hypothesized that the more sensitive flow cytometry (FC) based assays for PRA [FlowPRA(®) and Luminex(®) based Single Antigen Bead (SAB)] would also correlate with the ability to find compatible platelets for allosensitized recipients. METHODS: A female patient with myelodysplastic syndrome and a high HLA class I PRA [>90% PRA and cPRA by complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) assay and Flow PRA] required allogeneic BMT...

We have recently shown that a combination of microRNAs, miR combo, can directly reprogram cardiac fibroblasts into functional cardiomyocytes in vitro and in vivo. Reprogramming of cardiac fibroblasts by miR combo in vivo is associated with improved cardiac function following myocardial infarction. However, the efficiency of direct reprogramming in vitro is relatively modest and new strategies beyond the traditional two-dimensional (2D) culture should be identified to improve reprogramming process. Here, we report that a tissue-engineered three-dimensional (3D) hydrogel environment enhanced miR combo reprogramming of neonatal cardiac and tail-tip fibroblasts...

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant inherited disease characterized by movement, psychiatric, and cognitive disorders. Previous research suggests that Praeruptorin C (Pra-C), an effective component in the root of Peucedanum praeruptorum dunn, a traditional Chinese medicine, may function in neuroprotection. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Pra-C in the treatment of HD-like symptoms in a 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP) mouse model, and to explore the possible mechanism of the drug's activity...
