Upper limb paresis is a major source of disability in stroke survivors, and robotic aided exercise therapy is a promising approach to enhance motor abilities. Few devices have been available to provide robotic therapy to the fingers and hand. We report an open-label pilot study of 12 individuals with chronic moderate hemiparesis after stroke who underwent a six-week training program using a hand robotic device. This exploratory study focused on gaining insight into the psychological experience of stroke survivors undergoing inpatient rehabilitation. We present a method to independently measure the refractive index and the thickness of materials having flat and parallel sides by using a combination of Michelson and Fabry-Perot interferometry techniques. The method has been used to determine refractive-index values in the infrared with uncertainties in the third decimal place and thicknesses accurate to within +/- 5 microm for materials at room and cryogenic temperatures.

A method to determine the absolute refractive index of materials available in the shape of flat wafers with parallel sides by using interferometric techniques is presented. With this method, nondestructive, sample-specific measurements can be made. The method is tested by using silicon, germanium and zinc selenide, and measurements for both the ordinary and extraordinary axes of ZnGeP2 for temperatures of 300 and 77 K are reported.

This case report summarizes the evaluation and treatment used to provide occupational therapy services to a man living with multiple sclerosis. Primary impairments included ataxia, paraparesis, and decreased endurance. The focus of this case study was on improving the client's ability to use powered mobility to access the community despite severe ataxia.
