Brain arteriovenous malformations (AVM) are complex and highly challenging lesions, for which intra-operative indocyanin green fluorescence video angiography is widely used. Fluorescein video angiography (FVA) recently appeared as an alternative technique but the feasibility and usefulness of this technique is yet uncertain. This short series reports our preliminary experience of FVA in intracranial AVM surgery. We retrospectively studied the cases of seven patients who had FVA for an AVM surgery. The primary objective of this study was to assess the utility of FVA as judged by the surgeon...

We previously reported the effectiveness of the product of tumor number and size (NxS factor) for the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients following hepatectomy. The present study aimed to propose a new score based on the NxS factor to predict HCC recurrence following hepatectomy. A total of 406 patients who underwent hepatectomy for HCC at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine were retrospectively analyzed to develop the new score. Among clinicopathological factors, including the NxS factor, the marker subset that achieved the best performance for prediction of early recurrence was assessed, and a prognostic model for HCC recurrence after curative hepatectomy (REACH) was developed...

Vascular supply is a critical component of the tumor microenvironment (TME) and is essential for tumor growth and metastasis, yet the endogenous genetic modifiers that impact vascular function in the TME are largely unknown. To identify the host TME modifiers of tumor vascular function, we combined a novel genetic mapping strategy [Consomic Xenograft Model] with near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging and multiparametric analysis of pharmacokinetic modeling. To detect vascular flow, an intensified cooled camera based dynamic NIR imaging system with 785 nm laser diode based excitation was used to image the whole-body fluorescence emission of intravenously injected indocyanine green dye...

Tumor pH detection and pH value change monitoring have been of great interest in the field of nanomedicine. In this study, a pH-sensitive near-infrared fluorescence probe SiRB (Si-rhodamine and Boronic acid group) was synthesized by introducing a boronic acid group into the silicon rhodamine structure. ICG (Indocyanine green) as the fluorescence internal standard and SiRB were loaded into PLGA (poly lactic-co-glycolic acid) to form PLGA-SiRB-ICG nanoparticle. The experiments showed that the size of the nanoparticle was about 90 nm, which can reach tumor passively by enhancing permeability and retention effect...

BACKGROUND: In colon cancer, appropriate tumour excision and associated lymphadenectomy directly impact recurrence and survival outcomes. Currently, there is no standard for mesenteric lymphadenectomy, with a lymph node yield of 12 acting as a surrogate quality marker. Our goal was to determine the safety and feasibility of indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging to demonstrate lymphatic drainage in colon cancer in a dose-escalation study. METHODS: A prospective pilot study of colon cancer patients undergoing curative laparoscopic resection was performed...

PURPOSE: Visualization and precise dissection of the parathyroid glands are a crucial step of thyroidectomy. Moreover, identification of parathyroid adenoma in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism can be challenging due to the possible abnormal location of the enlarged parathyroid. Near-infrared fluorescence (NIR) can be adopted during video-assisted neck surgery in addition to standard endoscopic magnification to enhance the visualization of the parathyroid tissue. METHODS: Between July and August 2017, five patients (one male, four females) underwent video-assisted neck surgery at our hospital...

Heel ulcerations are a significant burden of care in both hospital and long-term care settings. The presence of peripheral arterial disease as a contributing factor to delayed healing is often not recognized, resulting in prolonged healing and high patient morbidity and mortality. Formal vascular evaluation and intervention is often not performed as these patients can have palpable pedal pulses while having localized ischemia of the heel. As routine noninvasive vascular studies can be affected by medial calcinosis and collateralization and do not specifically assess tissue perfusion to the heel, a false sense of security of adequate perfusion for healing can result...
