Hereditary folate malabsorption is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by impaired active folate transport across membranes and into the central nervous system due to loss-of-function mutations in proton-coupled folate transporter (PCFT). Newborns with this condition have initially normal folate stores, but as they are unable to absorb dietary folate and use rapidly their stores because of their growth demands, symptoms appear in the early infancy. Significant neurological morbidity usually follows the initial non-specific clinical presentation and delayed initiation of treatment...

Polymorphisms in drug-metabolizing enzymes might not completely explain inter-individual differences in toxicity profiles of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) that receive folinic acid/5-fluorouracil/oxaliplatin (FOLFOX4). Recent data indicate that the immune system could contribute to FOLFOX4 outcomes. In light of the immune inhibitory nature of human leukocyte antigen-G (HLA-G), a non-classical major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecule, we aimed to identify novel genomic markers of grades 3 and 4 (G3-4) toxicity related to FOLFOX4 therapy in patients with CRC...

Oxaliplatin is a platinum-derivative chemotherapeutic agent used for colorectal cancer in the adjuvant and metastatic setting in combination with folinic acid and 5-fluorouracil. Oxaliplatin causes an acute cold-induced neurotoxicity and a chronic cumulative neuropathy, which can require dose modification and impact quality of life. To date, no prevention and treatment strategies have proved effective thus reinforcing the importance of identifying at-risk patients in order to maximize therapeutic benefit while minimizing neurotoxicity...

Cordyceps sensu lato is a genus of arthropod-pathogenic fungi, which have been used traditionally as medicinal in Asia. Within the genus, Ophiocordyceps sinensis is the most coveted and expensive species in China. Nevertheless, harvesting wild specimens has become a challenge given that natural populations of the fungus are decreasing and because large-scale culture of it has not yet been achieved. The worldwide demand for products derived from cultivable fungal species with medicinal properties has increased recently...

Until now, no standard chemotherapy has been widely accepted for advanced gastric cancer (GC). The current research aimed to compare folinic acid, fluorouracil with irinotecan (mFOLFIRI) or with oxaliplatin (mFOLFOX7) as first-line treatments in patients with locally advanced GC in an open, randomized, phase II study. Previously untreated metastatic or recurrent GC patients with measurable disease received mFOLFIRI (arm A) or mFOLFOX7 (arm B) every 2 weeks. The defined second-line treatment was mFOLFOX7 for arm A and mFOLFIRI for arm B...

Antioxidant potential (AOP) is not only the property of the matrix analyzed but also depends greatly on the methodology used. The chromogenic radicals 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS•+), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) and Folin-Ciocalteu (FC) assay were applied to estimate how the method and the composition of the assay solvent influence the AOP determined for coffee, tea, beer, apple juice and dietary supplements. Large differences between the AOP values depending on the reaction medium were observed, with the highest AOP determined mostly in the FC assay...

There is a lack of prospective data about second-line treatments for metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients. This is partially due to recent changes in first-line chemotherapy treatments. Despite this dearth of information, 50.0% of the patients who experience failure with first-line folinic acid, 5-fluorouracil, irinotecan and oxaliplatin (folfirinox) treatment are eligible for additional chemotherapy. In this setting, gemcitabine is widely used without any standard recommendations available...

Disseminated carcinomatosis of the bone marrow (DCBM) is a condition in which bone marrow (BM) metastases diffusely invade the BM, and is frequently accompanied by disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). While prostate, lung, breast and stomach malignancies, in addition to neuroblastoma, are the most prevalent non-hematological malignancies to metastasize frequently to the BM, colorectal cancer is a malignancy that rarely metastasizes to the BM. The present case describes a 65-year-old male patient treated by resection and one course adjuvant chemotherapy for stage IIIC rectal cancer who presented with nasal bleeding at 8 months post-surgery...
