BACKGROUND: Compound Muniziqi granule (MNZQ) is a multi-component herbal preparation and a popular traditional Uighur medicine used in China for treating endocrine disorder-induced acne, chloasma, dysmenorrhea, menopausal syndrome, and melanoma. Harmine presented in MNZQ has been confirmed potential anticancer effect on the B16 cells among others. The purpose of this study is to explore the inhibitory effects of MNZQ against B16 cells and mechanism of autophagy and apoptosis induced by harmine in B16 cells...

N-acetyltransferase 10 (NAT10) has been considered a target for the treatment of human diseases such as cancer and laminopathies; however, its functional role in the biology of melanocytes is questionable. Using a small molecule or small interfering RNA targeting NAT10, we examined the effect of NAT10 inhibition on melanogenesis and melanoma growth in human and mouse melanoma cells. Genetic silencing or chemical inhibition of NAT10 resulted in diminished melanin synthesis through the suppression of melanogenesis-stimulating genes such as those encoding dopachrome tautomerase (DCT) and tyrosinase in B16F10 melanoma cells...

Human urine is currently the subject of biomedical investigations as a potential therapeutic resource and it continues to be used in remedies in different cultures and societies, including the Spanish culture. In this study we gather etnomedical knowledge about urotherapy and determine their associated symbolisms in Spain. A literature overview and a case study were carried out to compile urine-based remedies and as a direct analysis of symbolic systems. Urotherapy is widespread in Spanish folk medicine. Among the 204 collected remedies, those related to treatment of diseases or skin conditions predominate (63%)...

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the role and mechanism of action of G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) in melanogenesis. METHODS: GPER expression was detected in the A375 human melanoma cell line and B16 mouse melanoma cell line. Cell proliferation, melanin content, tyrosinase (TYR) activity, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) level, and TYR and microphthalmia-related transcription factor (MITF) expression were measured. GPER activation was altered by agonist and antagonist treatment and its expression was downregulated by gene silencing...

OBJECTIVES: Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used to treat a broad range of medical conditions, including dermatologic disorders. This systematic review aims to synthesize the evidence on the use of acupuncture as a primary treatment modality for dermatologic conditions. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register was performed. Studies were limited to clinical trials, controlled studies, case reports, comparative studies, and systematic reviews published in the English language...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the therapeutical effect of ear-acupoint pressing combined with Ear Apex (HX6,7) bloodletting on haemorheology in chloasma patients with Gan (Liver) depression pattern. METHODS: A total of 180 chloasma patients were randomly assigned to three groups, 60 cases in each. Patients in the earacupuncture (EA) group were treated with ear-acupoint pressing combined with Ear Apex (HX6,7) bloodletting; vitamins C and E were put into practice in the Western medicine (WM) group together with 0...

Dysplastic nevus is a precursor and a risk factor for the development of malignant melanoma, which explains the scientific interest in this field. Its etiology includes various of endogenous and exogenous factors, as we are considering the influence of hormonal status on the possible malignancy of congenital nevi in particular. The occurrence of some typical melanocytic lesions such as chloasma during pregnancy, where the hormone effect is demonstrated, as well as the more frequent changes of the dysplastic nevi namely within the pregnancy, leads to the idea for the endocrine dependence of the malignant transformation of some melanocytic lesions...

The development of antimelanogenic agents is important for the prevention of serious aesthetic problems such as melasma, freckles, age spots and chloasma. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimelanogenic effect of sesamol, an active lignan isolated from Sesamum indicum, in melan-a cells. Sesamol strongly inhibited melanin biosynthesis and the activity of intracellular tyrosinase by decreasing cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) accumulation. Sesamol significantly decreased the expression of melanogenesis-related genes, such as tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein-1,2 (TRP-1,2), microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R)...

The development of antimelanogenic agents is important for the prevention of serious aesthetic problems such as melasmas, freckles, age spots, and chloasmas. In the course of screening for melanin synthesis inhibitors, we found that the culture broth from an insect morphopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana CS1029, exhibits potent antimelanogenic activity. We isolated and purified an active metabolite and identified it as S-(-)-10,11-dihydroxyfarnesoic acid methyl ester (dhFAME), an insect juvenile hormone...

Vascular tumours and vascular malformations are common vasculose anomalies characteristic for dissimilar clinical course, specific biological as well as immune cytological and histological properties. Vascular lesions classification system and their detailed division into groups and subgroups were elaborated and implemented in Rome, in 1996, during meeting of the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA). It was based on modification of an earlier going division by Mullikien and Głowacki from 1982...

From the 1-BuOH-soluble fraction of a MeOH extract of the leaves of Grevillea robusta, new arbutin derivatives and related compounds, named grevillosides J-Q (1-8), together with eight known compounds (9-18) were isolated. Various kind of acyl groups were attached to β-D-glucose at the 6-position through an ester linkage. Their structures were mainly elucidated from one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopic data. For exploitation as skin-lightening and anti-chloasma agents, the inhibitory activities of the isolated compounds as well as ones isolated in previous experiments (19-31) toward tyrosinase and melanin-producing B16 cells were assayed...

BACKGROUND: Melasma is an acquired disorder of hyperpigmentation occurring on the face and predominantly affecting women of childbearing age. It is a chronic, often relapsing condition with a negative impact on quality of life. Current treatments for melasma are unsatisfactory. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article was to conduct an evidence-based review of interventions available for the treatment of melasma. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed and the keywords 'melasma' or 'chloasma' in the title...

Nowadays, abnormal hyperpigmentation in human skin such as melasma, freckles, and chloasma has become a serious esthetic problem. Cutaneous depigmenting agents could be used to treat these hyperpigmentation-associated dieseases. Dodoviscin A is a natural product isolated from the aerial parts of Dodonaea viscosa. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of dodoviscin A on melanin production in B16-F10 melanoma cells for the first time. We found that dodoviscin A inhibited melanin biosynthesis induced by 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine and PD98059 significantly, and there was no obvious effect on the viability of dodoviscin A-treated B16-F10 cells...

BACKGROUND: Pigmentation in human skin is an important defense mechanism against sunlight or oxidative stress. Despite the protective role of melanin, abnormal hyperpigmentation such as freckles and chloasma sometimes can be serious aesthetic problems. Because of these effects of hyperpigmentation, people have considered the effect of depigmentation. Azelaic acid (AZ) is a saturated dicarboxylic acid found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley. Previously, we showed that AZ inhibited melanogenesis...
