Spontaneous haemoperitoneum in pregnancy (SHiP) related to endometriosis is a rare and life-threatening complication. We report a case of a patient presenting to our department with major haemoperitoneum at 23+3 weeks of gestation due to a large rectovaginal endometriotic nodule. The patient required a midline laparotomy to evacuate 1 L of haemoperitoneum and achieve haemostasis. A large rectovaginal nodule was seen bleeding and was packed with haemostatic material and a large swab. After 24 hours, the swab was removed and haemostasis was confirmed...

Prolonged coagulation times, such as activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and thrombin time (TT), are common in patients infected with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) and have been confirmed to be related to patient's poor outcome by previous studies. To find out the reason for prolonged coagulation time in patients with SFTSV infection, and whether it predicts haemorrhagic risk or not. Seventy-eight consecutive patients with confirmed SFTSV infection were enrolled in this prospective, single-centre, observational study...

Bleeding after laparoscopic gynaecological surgery remains a potential complication. We assessed RADA16 (PuraStat®), a topical self-assembling peptide haemostatic agent, in a pilot study of 46 women undergoing laparoscopic gynaecological surgery. The primary outcome was intraoperative haemostatic efficacy for resection site bleeding. Haemostasis was achieved in all intraoperative bleeding situations (40/40 participants: 100%) with no clinically significant surgical bed bleeding or complications. Mean volume and time required to achieve haemostasis were 6 mL and 14 sec, respectively...

BACKGROUND: Haemostasis during ovarian cystectomy is reported to damage the ovarian reserve, but the comparative impacts of three haemostasis methods (bipolar energy, suture and haemostatic sealant) on ovarian reserve in patients with ovarian cysts are not well known. METHODS: The Cochrane Library, PubMed and Web of Science databases were searched from the date of inception of the database to June 2022 for literature exploring the impact of haemostasis methods during ovarian cystectomy on ovarian reserve...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Despite several recent international guidelines, no consensus exists on the bleeding risk nor haemostatic parameter thresholds that define the safety of invasive procedures in patients with cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to establish a position paper on the bleeding risk associated with invasive procedures in patients with cirrhosis among the experts involved in various guidelines. METHODS: All experts involved in recent guidelines on the management of invasive procedures in patients with cirrhosis were invited to classify 80 procedures as "high risk" or "low risk" with respect to bleeding...

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion in the perioperative cardiothoracic setting has accepted risks including deep sternal wound infection, increased intensive care unit length of stay, lung injury, and cost. It has an immunomodulatory effect which may cause allo-immunisation. This may influence long-term survival through immune-mediated factors. Targeting coagulation defects to reduce unnecessary or inappropriate transfusions may reduce these complications. METHODS: In 2012, an institution-wide patient blood management evidence-based algorithmic bleeding management protocol was implemented at The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane, Australia...

The use of radiotherapy has increased in recent years, especially for pelvic neoplasms, and this can result in long-term complications such as recurrent haemorrhagic radiation cystitis (RHC). A 73-year-old male patient presented to a hospital emergency department multiple times with visible haematuria and clots leading to urinary clot retention; he was finally diagnosed with RHC. During the last presentation, the bladder was irrigated continuously with saline using a three-way catheter. During hospitalisation, a cystourethroscopy was performed for bladder evaluation and clot evacuation...

Cervical pregnancy is a very rare form of ectopic pregnancy, which can be life-threatening due to the potential risk of massive haemorrhage. The most likely site of cervical implantation is within the endocervical canal. We report here an unusual and another possible site of cervical pregnancy on the surface of the ectocervix (portio). The patient presented with vaginal bleeding after a period of six weeks of amenorrhea and a positive urinary pregnancy test. Clinical examination was suggestive of a cervical mass on the surface of the portio, which was successfully managed by local excision and the application of haemostatic sutures...

Background Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common and potentially life-threatening complication in patients with lower limb traumatic fractures. Orthopaedic patients who experience trauma in the lower limbs with prolonged immobilization may experience a hypercoagulable state, which could eventually lead to the development of VTE. The presence of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) at a skin wound site is an important factor affecting wound healing. ROS scavenging, which regulates the ROS microenvironment, is essential for wound healing. In this study, we used novel electrospun PCL/gelatin/arbutin (PCL/G/A) nanofibrous membranes as wound dressings, with PCL/gelatin (PCL/G) as the backbone, and plant-derived arbutin (hydroquinone-β-d-glucopyranoside, ARB) as an effective antioxidant that scavenges ROS and inhibits bacterial infection in wounds...

Acid polysaccharide was extracted from Salvia przewalskii root powders (PSP), purified by diethylaminoethyl cellulose column (DEAE-52) and molecular sieve (PSP2). PSPm1 was obtained by modifying PSP2 with nitrite and phosphoric acid. The chemical structure of PSP2 and PSPm1 exhibited notable distinctions, primarily due to the absence of arabinose and promotion of glucuronic acid (GlcA). The structure of PSPm1 was deduced through the utilization of 1 H, 13 C, and 2-D NMR. The main chain was linked by α-D-Galp(1 → 3)-α-Glcp-(1 → fragments and →6)-β-D-Galp fragments, with the presence of →4)-α-D-GlcpA-(1 → 6)-β-D-Galp-(1 → , → 4)-α-D-GalAp-(1 → 2,4)-α-D-Rhap-(1 → fragments and →6)-α-Glcp-(1 → 2,4)-β-D-Manp-(1 → fragments...
