Previous scar scales have focused on verbal descriptions. A nonverbal visual assessment tool would provide a simple way for patients and physicians to quantify scar appearance. The authors sought to use a validated visual assessment tool for linear surgical scars to assess linear scars on the face and to determine whether patients and surgeons rate scars similarly. A total of 143 patients with linear facial scars resulting from repair of Mohs micrographic surgery defects used the visual assessment tool to rate their surgical scar...

The majority of penile carcinoma is squamous cell carcinoma. Although uncommon in the United States, it represents a larger proportion of cancers in the underdeveloped world. Invasive squamous cell carcinoma may arise from precursor lesions or de novo , and has been associated with lack of circumcision and HPV infection. Early diagnosis is imperative as lymphatic spread is associated with a poor prognosis. Radical surgical treatment is no longer the mainstay, and penile sparing treatments now are often used, including Mohs micrographic surgery...

BACKGROUND: Surgical reconstructive planning following Mohs surgery can be a difficult subject for dermatology residents to master. Prior research demonstrates that active learning is preferred and more effective compared to passive learning models and that dermatology residents desire greater complexity and volume in surgical training. We present a novel, active, problem-based learning tool for the education of Mohs reconstruction with the goal of improving residents' ability to plan surgical reconstructions...

BACKGROUND: Functional connectivity density (FCD) could identify the abnormal intrinsic and spontaneous activity over the whole brain, and a seed-based resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) could further reveal the altered functional network with the identified brain regions. This may be an effective assessment strategy for headache research. This study is to investigate the RSFC architecture changes of the brain in the patients with medication overuse headache (MOH) using FCD and RSFC methods...

Plasma is the liquid part of blood. It is estimated 21.6 million liters of plasma collect from Whole blood annually. From these plasma, 4.2 million liters transfuse, 8.1 million liters fractionate, 9.3 million liters waste. Nowadays, blood products and PDM (plasma derived medicine) consider as essential medicine in modern health care and transfusion medicine. Iranian blood transfusion organization as a non-profit organization was established in 1974 in order to centralize all blood transfusion activities from donor recruitment to distribution of blood components to hospitals...

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer remains the most prevalent type of cancer in the United States, and its burden on the health care system remains substantial. Standard treatments such as cryosurgery, electrodessication and curettage, topical and photodynamic therapies, and surgical excision including Mohs micrographic surgery are not without inherent morbidity, including risk of bleeding, infection, and scar. OBJECTIVE: Lasers may be an alternative for treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancer, and this paper reviews this therapeutic option...

Transition-metal-free synthetic methods have been developed for the preparation of unsymmetrical diaryl and aryl alkyl chalcogenides: sulfones, sulfides, and selenides from the sp(3)-C-H bond of oxindole, tetralone, arylacetamide, and aryl chalcogenide precursors. Sulfones were obtained from sodium sulfinates using potassium iodide, tert-butyl hydroperoxide in DMSO, and acetic acid. Sulfides and selenides were prepared from diaryl disulfides or diselenides employing potassium tert-butoxide in DMSO. α-Tetralone underwent concomitant chalcogenation and aromatization resulting in 2-chalcogenyl-1-naphthols in one pot...

BACKGROUND: Though a rare tumor, sebaceous carcinoma is relatively well-described in immunocompetent patients, in whom it often occurs in a periorbital distribution where it has an overall poor prognosis with a high metastasis rate. The effect of transplant-related immunosuppression on the development of sebaceous carcinoma and its outcomes has not been characterized. METHODS: We collected 9 cases from a single institution of patients developing sebaceous carcinoma after solid organ transplantation...

Processing of adipose-rich Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) specimens poses challenges that may preclude complete margin evaluation. In this setting, the value of additional freezing methods using various cooling agents has not been previously investigated. The aim of this study is to compare the frozen section quality of high-adipose Mohs specimens processed without additional cooling treatments versus those pretreated with 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (TFE) or liquid nitrogen (LN2). A set of 3 sections were each taken from 24 adipose-rich Mohs micrographic surgery specimens...

BACKGROUND: Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare intraepithelial adenocarcinoma occurring mainly in the anogenital region. Traditional management with wide local excision has shown high recurrence rates, thus Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) has emerged as a promising treatment option. OBJECTIVE: To compare long-term outcomes after treatment with MMS or excision for primary EMPD. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Retrospective cohort review was conducted for 207 patients with EMPD treated at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, between 1961 and 2012...

A transition-metal (TM) and halogen free NaOtBu-mediated oxidative cross coupling between sp3 C-H bond of oxindoles and sp2 C-H bond of nitroarenes has been developed to access 3-aryl substituted and 3,3-aryldisubstituted oxindoles in DMSO at room temperature in short time. Interestingly, sp3 C-H bond of oxindoles has also been added to styrene under TM-free conditions for the practical synthesis of quaternary 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles. Synthesized 3-oxindoles have also been further transformed into advanced heterocycles; benzofuroindoles, indoloindoles, and substituted indoles...

PATIENTS AND METHODS/MATERIALS: Retrospective review of patients with sebaceous carcinoma treated with Mohs micrographic surgery between 2001 and 2013 at one institution...

BACKGROUND: Research imaging of brain structure and function has helped to elucidate the pathophysiology of medication overuse headache (MOH). METHODS: This is a narrative review of imaging research studies that have investigated brain structural and functional alterations associated with MOH. Studies included in this review have investigated abnormal structure and function of pain processing regions in people with MOH, functional patterns that might predispose individuals to development of MOH, similarity of brain functional patterns in patients with MOH to those found in people with addiction, brain structure that could predict headache improvement following discontinuation of the overused medication, and changes in brain structure and function after discontinuation of medication overuse...

BACKGROUND: Periaqueductal gray (PAG) is the descending pain modulatory center, and PAG dysfunction had been recognized in migraine. Here we propose to investigate altered PAG texture features (quantitative approach for extracting texture descriptors for images) in the patients with medication-overuse headache (MOH) based on high resolution brain structural image to understand the MOH pathogenesis. METHODS: The brain structural images were obtained from 32 normal controls (NC) and 44 MOH patients on 3...

Aftercare services are not part of the usual care for people with severe mental disorders in Iran. This study was performed to assess the cost-effectiveness of aftercare services, including telephone follow-up or home visit, in addition to caregivers' education and training of social skills, for all subjects during the 20 months after hospital discharge. An economic evaluation was performed along with a registered randomised controlled trial (IRCT201009052557N2) on two groups of 60 persons recruited between 2010 and 2012...

BACKGROUND: Periaqueductal gray (PAG) is a substantial descending pain modulatory center, and previous voxel-based morphometry study confirmed the clusters with increased volume in PAG region in medication-overuse headache (MOH). The aim of this study is to investigate altered PAG volume in MOH using an automated PAG segment method to measure the true PAG volume. METHODS: High resolution three-dimensional T1-weighted fast spoiled gradient recalled echo MR images were obtained from 22 patients with MOH and 22 normal controls (NC)...
