Neurothekeoma is a benign cutaneous nerve sheath tumor usually located in the head and neck region. To date, only a few cases of intracranial location have been reported in the literature. We report an extremely rare case of intracranial neurothekeoma located in the brain parenchyma of the middle cranial fossa. A 55-year-old female patient was operated on at our clinic for a right temporal cystic mass lesion with heterogenic contrast enhancement. Histologically, the tumor had a multinodular hypercellular appearance with a myxoid matrix, peripheral fibrosis, and sclerosis...

A wild adult male conger Conger conger, captured by a SCUBA diver in the waters of coastal Italy, was sent for laboratory analysis due to the presence of multiple productive ulcerous skin lesions localized in the dorso-lateral body area, caudally to the gill operculum under the dorsal fin. The main mass was sessile, ulcerated and hemorrhaging in appearance and was surrounded by several smaller masses, which originated peripherally from the same mass or were isolated, always with a tendency to ulceration. Histology confirmed that the newly formed tissue originated from derma invading the closer tissues...

BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed that moderate hypotension used to control bleeding during extensive endoscopic skull base procedures may cause a decrease in blood flow velocity (BFV) in the middle cerebral artery (MCA). We assessed possible metabolic consequences of reduction of arterial pressure applied in endoscopic skull base operations. METHODS: The serum concentrations of neuron specific enolase (NSE) and S-100 protein were measured in 15 patients operated on with reduced hemodynamic parameters (hypotensive group) and in 10 individuals operated on under normotensive conditions (normotensive group)...

We aimed to evaluate whether nerve fibers are present in the endometrial layer of patients submitted to office hysteroscopy and their potential contribution to the pathogenesis of pain during that procedure. Through a prospective case-control study performed in tertiary centers for women's health, endometrium samples were collected during operative office hysteroscopy from 198 cycling women who previously underwent laparoscopy and/or magnetic resonance imaging investigation for infertility assessment. Samples were classified according to the degree of the pain patients experienced and scored from values ranging from 0 (absence of discomfort/pain) to 10 (intolerable pain) on a 10-cm visual analog scale (VAS)...

Feline cutaneous nerve sheath tumours (CNSTs) are uncommonly reported in the skin, since they are underestimated relative to the more common spindle cell tumours of soft tissue. In this study, 26 nerve sheath tumours selected from 337 skin neoplasms of cats were examined. Histologically, they were classified into malignant (MPNSTs) and benign tumours (BPNSTs) based on degree of cellular atypia and polymorphism as well as mitotic rate and diffuse necrosis. CPNSTs were tipically characterised by Antoni A pattern, in some cases associated with Antoni B pattern...

BACKGROUND: Classic neurothekeoma (nerve sheath myxoma) is regarded as being a true benign cutaneous tumor of nerve sheath origin. Cellular neurothekeoma was separated from the classic type by histogenesis, morphology and immunophenotype. Whether cellular neurothekeoma represents a continuum within the spectrum of classic neurothekeoma or is an independent entity is controversial. Only a small number of classic neurothekeomas of the oral mucosa have been reported and there are even fewer publications on cellular neurothekeoma...

INTRODUCTION: The inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) plays a crucial role in early sepsis-related microcirculatory dysfunction. Compared to a catecholamine therapy we tested effects of a specific iNOS-inhibitor (1400W) on the microcirculatory function in the brain. METHODS: Seventy SD-rats (280-310 g) were divided into 1 control and 6 sepsis groups. Sepsis groups received 1 or 5 mg/kg lipopolysaccharide (LPS) intravenously to induce a moderate or severe sepsis syndrome...

Schwannoma is a benign tumour originating from Schwann cells forming sheaths of peripheral nerves. Its location in the oral cavity, and particularly in the cheek, is very rare. A large tumour (5 cm) was surgically removed from the left cheek of a fifty-five-year-old man and pathological examination revealed schwannoma with Antoni A and B patterns. The tumour was investigated using immunofluorescence and histochemical stainings. It showed positive immunostaining for S-100, PGP 9.5, NSE, collagen IV, laminin, merosin and vimentin...

Malignant round cell neoplasia was identified in 12 llamas and 12 alpacas aged 0-23 years. Mean age of affected alpacas (3.1 years) was significantly less than that of affected llamas (8.0 years). Tumor cell morphology varied from large and often pleomorphic (11 tumors) to small and often homogeneous (13 tumors). Neoplastic lesions were multicentric in 12 cases. Other sites were gastric (5 cases), intra-abdominal (perirenal; 4 cases), intrathoracic (2 cases), and cervical (1 case). Immunohistochemistry with antibodies to CD79alpha, BLA36, and CD3 identified B-cell lymphoma (12 cases) and T-cell lymphoma (6 cases)...

A case of intraosseous schwannoma of rib is presented. A 22-year-old woman was admitted with paroxysmal thoracic pain, unproductive cough and a hard mass of the thorax. CT scan showed a unilocular osteolystic lesion in the rib. A needle biopsy was performed, and a diagnosis of intraosseous schwannoma was made. The patient underwent a partial excision of rib and the tumour was removed. Macroscopic examination revealed a 4 x 2 x 1.5 cm solid lesion with destruction of bone. Microscopically, the tumour showed typical features of schwannoma characterised by Antoni A and Antoni B tissues and Verocay bodies...
