BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The use of arthroscopy for tibial plateau fractures type I, II and III according to Schatzker classification has increased, yet its employment for tibial plateau fractures Schatzker IV, V and VI is controversial due to the potential risk of compartment syndrome, deep vein thrombosis and infection. We aimed to compare the rate of operative and postoperative complications among patients with these types of tibial plateau fractures treated with and without arthroscopy at the time of definitive reduction and osteosynthesis...

INTRODUCTION: D-dimer has a high negative predictive value for the diagnosis of venous thromboembolic disease (VTE). However, VTE has been reported in the presence of normal D-dimer values. METHODS: This is a prospective observational study in patients with VTE from Hospital Gregorio Marañón between 2001 and 2022, comparing the characteristics of clinical presentation based on D-dimer levels (<500 ng/mL vs. ≥500 ng/mL). RESULTS: A total of 2582 patients were found, 333 patients (12...

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a potentially lethal condition to be taken into account in pregnant women, where the situation is favored by the characteristic physiological changes of the pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium. The management of this pathology in this type of patient is based on anticoagulation, with the benefits and drawbacks that this implies. We present the case of a pregnant woman with massive DVT and the issues are discussed, such as the method of delivery (vaginal vs...

BACKGROUND: We describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) cases reported in Spain. METHODS: We included all venous or arterial thrombosis with thrombocytopenia following adenovirus vector-based vaccines (AstraZeneca or Janssen) to prevent COVID-19 disease between February 1st and September 26th , 2021. We describe the crude rate and the standardized morbidity ratio. We assessed the predictors of mortality...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Few studies have evaluated the correlation between the severity of cutaneous manifestations of chronic venous disease (CVD) of the lower limbs measured by the Clinical, Etiologic, Anatomic and Pathophysiologic classification (CEAP) and the Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS) combined, its risk factors, and venous reflux determined by Doppler ultrasonography. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical severity assessed by CEAP and VCSS with known risk factors for CVD and the severity of venous reflux...

Despite standard thromboprophylaxis, venous thrombosis is common in critically ill patients with COVID-19. The objective of this study was to evaluate deep venous thrombosis (DVT) incidence in patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia with mechanical ventilation requirements under intermediate dose of chemical thromboprophylaxis (1 mg/kg/day of enoxaparin). This was a single-center, descriptive, cross-sectional study of prospectively collected data. An active and systematic protocol with venous doppler was carried out for DVT diagnosis in lower limbs (or in jugulo-subclavian venous confluence) every 7 days...

BACKGROUND: Central venous catheters (CVCs) represent one of the main risk factors for venous thrombotic events (VTEs) in children. METHODS: We studied the Italian Registry of Pediatric Thrombosis (RITI) with regard to systemic radiologically confirmed CVC-related VTEs (CVC-VTEs) occurred during 6.5 years in children aged 29 days to 18 years. RESULTS: A total of 78 CVC-VTEs were included, which occurred in 76 patients (40/76, 53% males). CVC-VTEs comprised 67 non-cardiac VTEs (86%) and 11 intracardiac thrombotic events (ICTEs) (14%); the median age at onset was 19 and 17 months, respectively...

INTRODUCTION: To date, four Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKis) are licensed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and/or psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in North America and/or Europe: tofacitinib, baricitinib, upadacitinib, and filgotinib. Most DMARDs have cardioprotective potential, yet for some of them, including JAKi, the modulatory effect on cardiovascular risk remains undetermined. Since their commercialization, the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) is taking on a relevant role in RA patients...

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is an effective way to lose weight and the laparoscopic gastric sleeve is one of the techniques currently used. Portosplenomesenteric venous thrombosis is a complication that occurs in patients undergoing this surgical technique. At the moment there are no protocols to reduce the risk of this thrombotic event, so we show our experience and propose an algorithm. Vascular complications remain common after renal transplantation, occurring in 3% to 15% of patients. These complications can compromise graft function, with graft loss rates ranging from 12.6 to 66.7%.Vascular abnormalities of the graft, specifically the presence of multiple vessels, represent the most frequently studied risk factor for the development of vascular complications. Other risk factors identified for the development of vascular complications are linked to the characteristics of the recipient, or thromboembolic diseasesharing atherosclerosis and/or hypercoagulant state aspathogenic features...

This case report describes two 28-year-old healthy males, who werw admitted to hospital due to pain in the lower extremities. Both patients were diagnosed with deep venous thrombosis. In order to determine extent and treatment of the thrombosis, a CT angiography was performed in both patients showing infrarenal vena cava inferior agenesia. Investigation for causes of the thrombosis ruled out cancer and thrombophilia. The patients made full recovery with anticoagulant therapy and compression stockings. Permanent treatment with anticoagulants should be considered in patients with vena cava inferior agenesia...
