In recent years, an increasing number of deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) undergraduates have chosen to study in STEM fields and pursue careers in research. Yet, very little research has been undertaken on the barriers and inclusive experiences often faced by D/HH undergraduates who prefer to use spoken English in research settings, instead of American Sign Language (ASL). To identify barriers and inclusive strategies, we studied six English speaking D/HH undergraduate students working in research laboratories with their eight hearing mentors, and their three hearing peers sharing their experiences...

Nurse educators are called to increase diversity in the clinical and faculty workforce; promote safe, inclusive learning environments; develop curricula that provide an anti-biased view of patients and health conditions; and provide students with educational opportunities to learn from individuals with diverse backgrounds. An innovative curriculum design inclusive of Indigenous worldviews was implemented at a tribal college. It provides an exemplar that supports diverse student learning, retention, and graduation...

We investigate Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) prevalence, incidence rate, and risk factors in individuals racialized as Asian and/or Asian-American and assess sample representation. Prevalence, incidence rate, risk factors, and heterogeneity of samples were assessed. Random-effects meta-analysis was conducted, generating pooled estimates. Of 920 records across 14 databases, 45 studies were included. Individuals racialized as Asian and/or Asian-American were mainly from Eastern and Southern Asia, had higher education, and constituted a smaller sample relative to non-Hispanic white cohorts...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the experience of medical and graduate learners with second victim experience (SVE) after medical errors or adverse patient outcomes, including impact on training and identification of factors that shape their postevent recovery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The validated Second Victim Experience and Support Tool-Revised (SVEST-R), Physician Well-Being Index, and supplemental open-ended questions were administered to multidisciplinary health care learners between April 8, 2022, and May 30, 2022, across a large academic health institution...

AUDIENCE: This scenario was developed to educate emergency medicine residents on the diagnosis and management of two concurrent conditions: septic abortion and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). INTRODUCTION: Patients with an abortion (spontaneous or induced) of less than twenty weeks gestation may present with concurrent uterine infection, also known as septic abortion. One of the complications of septic abortion is DIC. Early management of both underlying etiology (septic abortion) and subsequent complications (DIC) is crucial to minimize morbidity and mortality...

AUDIENCE: This simulated automated chest compression device was designed for use in simulation cardiac arrest cases involving emergency medicine residents, but it would be applicable to other learners such as nurses, pharmacists, and medical students. BACKGROUND: Automated chest compression devices (ACCD) are commonly utilized in cardiac arrest in the emergency department and by emergency medical services (EMS) as patients arrive in the ED.1 Prolonged simulated cardiac arrest can be challenging to maintain proper chest compression depth and technique...

BACKGROUND: Shoulder instabilities constitute a large proportion of shoulder injuries and have a wide range of presentations. While evidence regarding glenohumeral dislocations and associated risk factors has been reported, less is known regarding the full spectrum of instabilities and their risk factors. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to identify modifiable risk factors to guide patient management decisions with regards to implementation of interventions to prevent or reduce the risk of shoulder instability...

Inclusive education has increased the demand for school-based occupational therapy services and has reconceptualised the practice in mainstream schools. Therapists are now expected to work collaboratively with teachers within tiered intervention models to support access and participation of all students, including those with disabilities, within the natural classroom context. School-based occupational therapy has become a specialised area of practice, as therapists work within educational, rather than health, systems and processes...

This editorial discusses the transformative potential of digital health literacy and the critical role of electronic medical records (EMRs) in promoting patient empowerment in the healthcare landscape of developing countries. It examines the impact of digital media in healthcare, noting its ability to both democratize access to information and services and pose risks of misinformation among populations with limited health literacy. The discussion includes an overview of key literacy components critical for effectively navigating the digital healthcare ecosystem...

Doctors are well-trained in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of individual stool or urine sample data; however, wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) combines the excretion of many community members into an anonymous health sample tied to a geographic location. We advocate for the inclusion of WBE in medical education. WBE offers physicians an opportunity to better care for patients with diseases seen at health clinics and doctors' offices, customize and inform treatment, and accept positive results as true positives, backed by the contextual information provided by wastewater findings...

BACKGROUND: Diabetes affects millions of people worldwide, making them more vulnerable to infections, including seasonal influenza. It is therefore particularly important for those suffering from diabetes to be vaccinated against influenza each year. However, influenza vaccination coverage remains low in this population. This review primarily aims to identify the determinants of influenza vaccination in people with diabetes (T1D or T2D). Secondly, it aims to assess main recommendations for influenza vaccination, vaccine effectiveness, vaccination coverage, and how education and pharmacists can encourage uptake of the vaccine in the diabetic population...

BACKGROUND: The globe has been working to promote a multi-domain lifestyle intervention for dementia prevention in older adults, referring to the Worldwide-FINGERS (Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability) initiative. In China, the multi-domain lifestyle intervention has been implemented in rural communities (MIND-China), yet the adaptability of such intervention based on the urban communities in China has not been verified. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore the effectiveness of preoperative multimedia educational sessions on the levels of anxiety and satisfaction among women undergoing cesarean section (CS). The Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane databases were searched without language limitations for eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from their inception up to October 15, 2023. A random-effect meta-analysis was conducted, and the quality of this meta-analysis was evaluated using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) approach...

OBJECTIVE: Although approximately one-fifth of obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) residents matriculate from osteopathic or international medical schools, most literature regarding the transition to residency focuses on allopathic medical school graduates. To create comprehensive interventions for this educational transition, we must understand the needs of all incoming residents. Our objective was to examine OBGYN residents' perceptions of their transition to residency, and to understand how residents' background and medical school environment influence their perceived sense of readiness...
