INTRODUCTION: Cough intensity is an important determinant of cough severity reported by patients. Cough sound analysis has been widely validated for the measurement of cough frequency but few studies have validated its use in the assessment of cough strength. We investigated the relationship between cough sound and physiological measures of cough strength. METHODS: 32 patients with chronic cough and controls underwent contemporaneous measurements of voluntary cough sound, flow and oesophageal pressure...

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary artery aneurysms constitute <1% of aneurysms occurring in the thoracic cavity. Congenital cardiac defects are responsible for the majority (>50%) of cases, however, pulmonary artery aneurysm is a rare sequelae of pulmonary tuberculosis reported in about 5% of patients with chronic cavitary tuberculosis on autopsy. The natural history of this potentially fatal condition remains poorly understood and guidelines for optimal management are controversial. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old man, a nursing student of African descent, was referred to us from an up-country regional hospital with a 4-week history of recurrent episodes of breathlessness, awareness of heartbeats and coughing blood 3 weeks after completing a 6-month course of anti-tuberculosis drugs...

BACKGROUND: Revision endoscopic sinus surgery (RESS) may be required for partially controlled or uncontrolled chronic rhinosinusitis. Studies that reported technical success, e.g., sinus ostia patency after RESS, do not address whether the patient's symptoms and quality of life (QOL) improve after surgery. However, patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) are useful to assess the impact of sinus surgery on a patient's symptoms and QOL. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review was undertaken to evaluate the impact of RESS on PROMs...

INTRODUCTION: Night-time respiratory symptoms have a considerable impact on sleep and life quality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Lack of awareness of night-time symptoms can lead to worsened COPD control. Automated long-term monitoring of respiratory symptoms with LEOSound enables assessment of nocturnal wheezing and cough. METHODS: In this observational study we investigated the prevalence and severity of cough and wheezing in patients with stable COPD [Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) II-IV] disease for two consecutive nights with the LEOSound system...

INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of 21st century. About 210 million people all over the world are suffering with COPD, and annually 3 million people die of it. Under the influence of different factors, such as smoking, air prolusion, evaporation of chemicals, poisoning effect of chemical firings, inflammation processes take place in lungs, and if it is prolonged and take place simultaneously with morphological changes in the lungs, it it provide the de4velopment of the systemic inflammation process...

The lung is one of several moderately radiosensitive organs. Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI), including acute radiation pneumonitis and chronic radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis, occurs most often in radiotherapy of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and other thoracic cancers. Clinical symptoms of RILI include dry cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, and even severe respiratory failure and death. The occurrence of RILI is a complex process that includes a variety of cellular and molecular interactions which ultimately leads to large fibroblast accumulation, proliferation, and differentiation, resulting in excessive extracellular matrix deposits, causing pulmonary fibrosis...

BACKGROUND: Expectoration of sputum can be difficult for patients with respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis, or bronchiectasis because of the effects of decreased pulmonary function, respiratory muscle fatigue, altered sputum properties, and impaired ciliary function. We developed a new method for the vibratory stimulation of the cervical trachea and this study aimed to compare it with the Acapella (a current oscillation device) method...

Syncope is a common complaint in both neurology clinic and emergency department. It is defined as transient loss of consciousness with loss of postural tone, which is usually self-limited and followed by a spontaneous recovery. Our report describes a case of cough syncope resulting from chronic intractable cough caused by post nasal drip. Although his experience was debilitating, we were able to control his symptoms significantly using a small dose of Gabapentin. This dose is much lower when compared with the already established licensed indicated higher doses used for the treatment of neuropathic pain and epilepsy...

Aspergillus is described as mould characterised by septate hyphae about 2-4μ in diameter, it is ubiquitous in nature and spreads by inhalation of spores. It causes opportunistic infections in almost six forms namely Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, Aspergillus sinusitis, Cutaneous aspergillosis, Aspergilloma, Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, Invasive aspergillosis. Invasive aspergillosis of mediastinum in an immunocompetent patient has rarely been reported. We present a case of a young male who had presented with chest pain, cough and breathleness was later diagnosed as fulminant mediastinal aspergillosis...

BACKGROUND: An association between dampness at home and respiratory conditions has been convincingly demonstrated in children. Fewer studies have been performed in adults and data are lacking for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). With a prevalence of 10.9% in Europe, CRS imposes a significant burden on quality of life, as well as economy. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to study CRS and other respiratory conditions in relation to dampness at home in a representative sample of adults...

Non-asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis (NAEB) is an important cause of chronic cough. The patients with NAEB present irritable cough as a sole or major symptom. They share similar features with asthmatic patients: sputum eosinophilia and responds well to glucocorticosteroids. However, compared with asthma, NAEB subjects have a normal spirometry and absence of airway hyperresponsiveness. The inflammatory cells and airway remodeling might result in the difference of mechanism between NAEB and asthma. On the prognosis of NAEB, only a few studies have been conducted in the last two decades...
