Currently two factors hinder the use of collagen as building block of regenerative devices: the limited mechanical strength in aqueous environment, and potential antigenicity. Polymeric collagen is naturally found in the cross-linked state and is mechanically tougher than the monomeric, acid-soluble collagen ex vivo. The antigenicity of collagen, on the other hand, is mainly ascribed to inter-species variations in amino acid sequences of the non-helical terminal telopeptides. These telopeptides can be removed through enzymatic treatment to produce atelocollagen, although the effect of this cleavage on triple helix organization, amino acidic composition and thermal properties is often disregarded...

Damnacanthal (Dam) is a phytochemical with many pharmacological properties including anticancer activity. However, its hydrophobicity, poor bioavailability and stability limit its application in many biological approaches. In this study, Dam nanomicelles as an emerging platform were developed to overcome limitations. The deoxycholic and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether grafted chitosan (DCA-CS-mPEG) was synthesized and characterized by FTIR and (1)H NMR and the degree of substitution (DS) was determined by elemental analysis (EA)...

With the aim of exploring treatment alternatives for priority insecticide acetamiprid (ACMP) abatement, the removal of this compound from water by ozonation was studied for the first time, paying special attention to the kinetic, mechanistic and toxicological aspects of the process. The second order rate constants of reactions between ACMP and both molecular ozone (O3) and hydroxyl radicals (OH) were determined to be 0.25M(-1)s(-1) and 2.1·10(9)M(-1)s(-1), respectively. On the basis of kinetic results, the degradation of ACMP during ozonation could be well-explained by the reactivity of this pesticide with OH...

A direct approach for the determination of a specific hydrolysis product of organophosphorus nerve agents such as methylphosphonic acid (MPA) in urine by ion chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (IC-MS/MS) has been developed. The first advantage of the proposed approach is a rapid and simple sample preparation, which does not require a large sample volume, complicated and laborious preconcentration and derivatization steps, and takes less than 7min per sample. The second advantage is the fast and selective IC determination of MPA carried out on a noncommercial anion exchanger based on a poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) (PS-DVB) substrate with a high degree of crosslinking and a covalently-bonded branched functional layer, which enables complete resolution of MPA from major urine matrix components and allows one to overcome matrix effects...

The mercuration of calix[4]arene immobilized in the cone conformation allowed the introduction of an amino group at the meta position of the basic skeleton. Acylation and subsequent intramolecular Bischler-Napieralski-type cyclization led to a novel type of bridged calixarene containing a seven-membered ring. These compounds with an enlarged and rigidified cavity represent a unique and inherently chiral system that may potentially be applicable for the design of chiral receptors. The absolute configuration of one enantiomer, obtained by resolution of the racemate using chiral HPLC, was assigned by single-crystal structure determination...

Lactose intolerance is the decreased ability to digest lactose, and the population involved is rapidly increasing all over the world. Different procedures have been reported in the literature to quantify lactose in dairy products, but the official method of analysis is based on enzymatic assay. In this paper, the effectiveness of two enzymatic kits in detecting residual lactose in lactose-free milk was investigated, and a comparison with two alternative chromatographic methods was done. The investigation used several samples of UHT milk containing different levels of lactose, and the results highlighted the inadequacy of the enzymatic assays and of the HPLC-RI method to analyse lactose-free milk...

In a recent mini-review, Tarasova et al. (Analyst, 2016, 141, 4816) compared several peptide retention prediction models for reversed-phase HPLC developed for applied proteomics. The mechanism of peptide retention in RP-HPLC is very complex. Peptide separation selectivity is affected by multiple parameters of a separation system. Consequently, proper comparison of the models requires a detailed knowledge (to provide the best match) of separation conditions used to acquire both optimization and test datasets...

5-Bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) photosensitizes DNA to strand break formation. However, this type of photodamage is completely quenched by the presence of triethylamine (TEA) which originates from RP-HPLC purification commonly employed by oligonucleotide providers. While the presence of TEA in oligonucleotide samples does not interfere with PCR or other molecular biology applications, the mechanism of photochemical reaction proceeding in the labeled DNA is dramatically changed due to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between the photoexcited BrdU and the ground state TEA...

Xylose is the second major fermentable sugar present in hard woods and herbs (after d-glucose). Therefore, efficient conversion of xylose to ethanol is essential for the commercialization of lignocellulosic ethanol, which may provide an ideal alternative to fossil fuels in the future. ZLYRHZ7 is a fusant produced by protoplast fusion between two different yeast species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae W5 and Candida shehatae 20335, which is able to utilize xylose to produce ethanol. To improve ethanol production and to quantitatively analyze metabolic pathway in ZLYRHZ7, we used high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to assess the utilization rates of xylose, xylitol, and xylulose, and to measure ethanol yields using xylose, xylitol, and xylulose as sole carbon sources...
