A new nanocomposite consisting of lanthanum ferrite nanoparticles (LaFeO3 NPs) integrated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was fabricated via facile sonochemical approach. The engineered nanocomposite was applied to simultaneously determine acetaminophen (ACP) and dopamine (DA) in a binary mixture. The LaFeO3 NPs@CNT probe possesses several advantages such as superior conductivity, large surface area, and more active sites, improving its electrocatalytic activity towards ACP and DA. Under optimized conditions, the anodic peak currents (Ipa) linearly increased with increasing concentration of ACP and DA in the range 0...

In this study, lanthanum carbonate (LC) was selected as a capping agent to examine its effectiveness in immobilizing sediment internal phosphorus (P), arsenic (As) and tungsten (W). With a 180-day incubation experiment, it was determined that LC capping efficiently reduced the concentrations of soluble reactive P (SRP), soluble As and soluble W in pore water, with the highest reduction rate of 83.39%, 56.21% and 68.52%, respectively. The primary mechanisms involved in the adsorption of P, As and W by LC were precipitation reactions and ligand exchange...

La2 O3 nanoparticles stabilized on carbon nanoflake (CNF) matrix were synthesized and graphitized to produce core-shell structures La2 O3 /CNFs@C. Further oxidation of these structures by nitric acid vapors for 1, 3 or 6 h was performed, and surface-oxidized particles La2 O3 /CNFs@C_x (x = 1, 3, 6) were produced. Bulk and surface compositions of La2 O3 /CNFs@C and La2 O3 /CNFs@C_x were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. With increasing the duration of oxidation, the oxygen and La2 O3 content in the La2 O3 /CNFs@C_x samples increased...

BACKGROUND Hyperphosphatemia is a complication of chronic renal failure (CRF) due to reduction in the glomerular filtration rate. Lanthanum carbonate is a commonly used phosphate binder for patients with CRF and hyperphosphatemia, but has adverse effects if patients are not monitored. This report is of a 47-year-old man with hyperphosphatemia due to CRF treated with lanthanum carbonate tablets who presented acutely with partial large bowel obstruction. The incidence of lanthanum carbonate causing intestinal obstruction is rare, and few cases in the literature have described the course of the disease in detail...

In order to mitigate the harmful effects of eutrophication in water bodies, the applications of lanthanum-modified materials for phosphate removal from wastewater have attracted much attention. Unlike conventional adsorbents, plant wastes usually have poor adsorption abilities and are difficult to be reused for desorption of phosphate due to their small pore sizes and ununiform loading of modified ions. In this paper, a composite adsorbent (LC-MM) was synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of waste traditional Chinese medical materials (MMs) with load of lanthanum carbonate and co-heating treatment with coal fly ash (CFA), which was applied to remove phosphate from water...

The development of cost-effective non-noble metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) opens up the possibility for sustainable energy systems. Herein, we report a surface overcoating strategy with lanthanum organic complex (La-OC) as the precursor to prepare lanthanum species (La-SPc) encapsulated in nitrogen, fluorine, and sulfur self-doped porous carbon (NFS-PC) composites (La-SPc@NFS-PC) for efficient ORR and OER. For the sake of people's health and the safety of the environment, more efforts should be directed towards the fabrication of gas sensors that can operate effectively at room temperature (RT). In this context, increased attention has been paid to developing gas sensors based on rare-earth (RE)-doped transparent conducting oxides (TCO). In this report, lanthanum-doped zinc oxide (La-doped ZnO) films were fabricated by sol-gel and spin-coating techniques. As the population grows, the scientific community remains focused on researching new materials, methods, and devices to ensure the availability of safe drinking water. The main aim of this research was to decrease the recombination rate of the charge carriers of La2 O3 and enhance the catalytic and antimicrobial activity by employing Y/Cs- doped La2 O3, respectively. In the current study, different concentrations of yttrium (Y) and a fixed amount of carbon spheres (Cs) doped into lanthanum oxide (La2 O3 ) nanostructures (NSs) were synthesized by the coprecipitation technique...

Metal complexes bearing single-electron metal-metal bonds (SEMBs) exhibit unusual electronic structures evoking strong magnetic coupling, and such bonds can be stabilized in the form of dimetallofullerenes (di-EMFs) in which two metals are confined in a carbon cage. Up to now, only a few di-EMFs containing SEMBs are reported, which are all based on a high-symmetry icosahedral ( I h ) C80 cage embedding homonuclear rare-earth bimetals, and a chemical modification of the I h -C80 cage is required to stabilize the SEMB...

Ammonia desulfurization is a typical resource-recovery-type wet desulfurization process that is widely used in coal-fired industrial boilers. However, the sulfur recovery is limited by the low oxidation rate of byproduct (ammonium sulfite), leading to secondary SO2 pollution due to its easy decomposability. In addition, the high toxic arsenic trace substances coexisting in desulfurization liquids also reduce the quality of the final sulfate product, facing with high environmental toxicity. In this study, nitrogen-doped porous carbon coembedded with lanthanum and cobalt (La-Co@NPC) was fabricated with heterologous catalytic active sites (Co0 ) and adsorption sites (LaOCl) to achieve sulfite oxidation and the efficient removal of high toxic trace arsenic for the recovery of high-value ammonium sulfate from the desulfurization liquid...

BACKGROUND: Hyperphosphataemia is a common complication of kidney disease. Current dialysis techniques do not provide enough phosphorus clearance, hence the need to use phosphorus binders. Treatment options include calcium carbonate, calcium acetate, lanthanum carbonate, sevelamer hydrochloride and iron-based binders. Patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) with sustained elevated ferritin levels exceeding 800 ng/mL are at a higher risk of death. We identify PD patients treated with iron-based binders and compare ferritin and risk of iron accumulation to patients treated with non-iron-based binders...

Back-scattered electron imaging and X-ray elemental mapping were combined in a tabletop scanning electron microscope (SEM) to investigate cross-sections of three AA-type (mignon) nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries from different manufacturers. All batteries underwent 500-800 charge/discharge cycles and reached their end of lifetime after several years as they could no longer hold any significant electric charge (less than 20% of nominal charge capacity), but none showed any short-circuiting. The types of degradation observed in this field study included electrode swelling, metallic nickel formation and carbon incorporation into pores in the positive electrodes and, in the negative electrodes, metal alloy segregation of different elements such as nickel, lanthanum and, in one case, sodium, as well as grain break-up and pore formation...

Catalytic oxidation using environmental catalysts is an important method for the removal of harmful compounds. To date, novel environmental catalysts have been developed from unique concepts based on solid-state ionics.
