Abernethy malformation, also termed congenital portosystemic shunt and congenital absence of portal vein (CAPV) is the result of malformation of the splanchnic venous system. Congenital portosystemic shunts are divided into extra-and intrahepatic shunts. Two shunts have been defined: type I is characterized by the complete diversion of portal blood into the vena cava with an associated congenital absence of the portal vein. Type II is defined by an intact but diverted portal vein through a side-to-side, extrahepatic connection to the vena cava...

An efficient and convenient synthetic route to glycosyl 1-β-phosphates has been developed using diallyl chlorophosphate as a phosphorylating agent with 4-N,N-dimethylaminopyridine under mild conditions. Diallyl-glycosyl 1-β-phosphate triesters of D-manno, L-glycero-D-manno-hepto-, D-gluco-, D-galacto-, and L-fuco-pyranose as well as lactose have been obtained by this strategy in good yields and excellent β-selectivities. Furthermore, the diallyl 6-azido-mannosyl 1-β-phosphate 2 was deprotected under mild conditions and converted into potentially clickable analogues of β-mannosyl phosphoisoprenoids I and ADP-heptose II...

Renal stone disease and gallstone disease are widely prevalent and costly disease across the globe. Both renal stone disease and gallstone disease are associated with a variety of diseases including obesity, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, hypertension, insulin resistance diabetes and gout. Importantly, the presence of either renal stone disease or gallstone disease is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. In a recent study of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC), individuals with a history of gallstones were 54% more likely to report a history of nephrolithiasis after adjusting for age, gender, body size and other factors...

The title compound {systematic name: (2S,3R)-ethyl 3-[(3aS,4R,6S,6aS)-6-tert-butyl-dimethyl-silyl-oxy-2,2-dimethyl-per-hydro-furo[3,4-d][1,3]dioxol-4-yl]-2-nitro-3-[(S)-tetra-hydro-2H-pyran-2-yl-oxy]propanoate}, C(23)H(41)NO(10)Si, is the product of the Henry reaction of 1-O-tert-butyl-dimethyl-silyl-2,3-O-isopropyl-idene-α-d-lyxo-penta-dialdo-1,4-furan-ose with ethyl nitro-acetate and the subsequent protection of its C-5 hydr-oxy group as tetra-hydro-pyranyl, in order to avoid the retro-Henry reaction. The tetra-hydro-pyranyl group adopts a chair conformation...

[reaction: see text] A general procedure for the stereoselective synthesis of 2-deoxy-2-iodo-hexo- and -hepto-pyranosyl glycosides from furanoses is reported. The proposed methodology provides a new route for accessing 2-deoxy-oligosaccharides. The procedure involves three reactions: Wittig-Horner olefination to give alkenyl sulfanyl derivatives, electrophilic iodine-induced cyclization to give phenyl 2-deoxy-2-iodo-1-thio-hexo-glycosides, and glycosylation. Protected furanoses 1, 3, and 6-11, which include examples of the four possible isomeric configurations of furanoses, were reacted with diphenyl phenylsulfanylmethyl phosphine oxide to give the alkenyl sulfanyl derivatives 2, 4, and 12-16...

Tetrandrine is a calcium channel antagonist with reported antihypertensive effect. However, the potential role of tetrandrine as a therapeutic agent in portal hypertension has yet to be explored. The present study aimed to investigate the haemodynamic effects of chronic tetrandrine treatment on portal hypertensive rats. Portal hypertension was induced by partial portal vein ligation in Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals were allocated into one of two groups: a tetrandrine group and a vehicle group. Tetrandrine (20 mg/kg) or vehicle was administered by gavage every 12 h for 8 consecutive days, starting 1 day before ligation and continuing thereafter...

The antitumor activities of Phytolacca acinosa polysaccharides I (PAP-I) and its effects on the induction of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and immunological cytotoxicity of peritoneal macrophages were studied. PAP-I was given ip 5-20 x 7 d to ICR mice as priming agent with subsequent lipopolysaccharides (10 micrograms/mouse) iv for TNF production. TNF activity was measured by crystal violet staining assay using L929 cells. PAP-I showed priming activity for TNF production with hepto-splenic hyperplasia in a dose-dependent manner...

Methyl 7-O-(2-amino-2-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl)-L-glycero-D-manno-hepto+ ++ pyranoside (1) was released from the lipopolysaccharide of the UDP-galactose epimerase-less mutant J-5 of Escherichia coli by methanolysis and isolated by high-voltage paper electrophoresis. Its chemical structure was determined by chemical analysis, deamination with nitrous acid, g.1.c.-m.s., and 1H- and 13C-n.m.r. spectroscopy performed on its acetylated derivative. The disaccharide moiety of 1 was also detected in lipopolysaccharides of Vibrio cholerae...

Hepato-biliary sequential scintigraphy is an isotope method in the diagnosis of liver and biliary disease. The value and accuracy of the diagnostic information depends on the development of high resolution gamma cameras and new radiopharmaceuticals; these are described briefly. Our investigations on 350 patients were carried out (99m)Tc-Soloscint-Hepatobida. A number of clinical examples illustrate the scope and value of the examination; from these the indications can be deduced. Hepto-biliary scintigraphy will not replace proven gastro-enterological and radiological methods of investigation, but may be added to these in order to obtain rapid and reliable information...
