BACKGROUND: Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are a major component of the tumor microenvironment (TME) and exert an important role in tumor progression. Due to the heterogeneity and plasticity of TAMs, modulating the polarization states of TAMs is considered as a potential therapeutic strategy for tumors. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been implicated in various physiological and pathological processes, yet the underlying mechanism on how lncRNAs manipulate the polarization states of TAMs is still unclear and remains to be further investigated...

Background: Thrombophlebitis and thrombosis are the most common causes of jugular vein occlusion in horses. Medical and surgical treatments aim to recanalize the occluded vessel and reduce proximal venous congestion and edema. Case Description: The present report describes a clinical case of equine jugular vein thrombosis (JVT) with complete vein occlusion diagnosed by saline contrast ultrasonography (SCU) and confirmed by contrast venography. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that the SCU test can be easily performed and objectively interpreted using standard ultrasound equipment; it is not expensive and it does not require x-ray exposure...

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the anatomy of the jejunal veins (JVs) flowing into the superior mesenteric vein (SMV), and whether they can be safely divided during pancreaticoduodenectomy. METHODS: Computed tomography was used to review the jejunal branches off the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and into the SMV in 123 consecutive patients. The common trunk of the JVs (jejunal venous trunk, JVT) was classified as ventral or dorsal to the SMA. RESULTS: The first JVT involved multiple JVs in 108 (87...

Jugular vein thrombosis (JVT) is extremely difficult to diagnose clinically because of its rarity, the wide range of possible symptoms and the variety of differential diagnoses. A rapid diagnosis is important in order to avoid or prevent imminent life-threatening complications. This study reports a clinical case of extensive JVT due to increased thrombophilia in conjunction with ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) after in vitro fertilization, increased APC resistance and immobilization. It also discusses the current literature that forms the basis for recommendations regarding the diagnosis, therapy and interdisciplinary management...

BACKGROUND: Acute oral or pharyngeal infections usually heal under adequate therapy within a few days. Therefore severe regionary or systemic complications are not regularly seen. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report on 3 patients in whom during or after apparent recovery from a pharyngeal or perioral infection a one-sided painful swelling of the neck associated with fever and leucocytosis developed. RESULTS: Color Doppler sonography (CDS) revealed unilateral thrombosis of the internal jugular vein (IJV) in all cases, whereupon we initiated high-dosed parenteral antibiotic therapy and therapeutic heparinisation...

We examined the role and molecular mechanism of cADPR action on Ca(2+) spark properties in mouse bladder smooth muscle. Dialysis of cADPR with patch pipettes increased frequency and amplitude of spontaneous transient out currents (STOCs) to 6.1+/-0.87 currents/min from 1.2+/-0.36 currents/min (control) and to 179.8+/-48.7pA from 36.4+/-22.6pA (control), respectively, in wildtype (WT) cells, and the effects of cADPR on STOCs were significantly blocked by JVT-591, a RYR2 stabilizer. In contrast, no significant changes were observed in FKBP12...

Jugular vein thrombosis (JVT) is usually secondary to central venous catheterisation, distant malignancy, hypercoagulable state or ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Spontaneous internal JVT is an extremely rare entity. A 61-year-old man presented with swelling of the right side of his face. An ultrasonographic scan showed thrombosis of the right jugular vein. Clinical tests, including oncomarkers, X-ray, CT scan and abdominal ultrasonography, searching for malignancy, were negative. The patient was heparinized immediately using LMWH and then underwent warfarin anticoagulation therapy for 6 months...

OBJECTIVE: Lemierre's syndrome, or jugular vein thrombosis (JVT) associated with anaerobic infection of the head and neck and frequently complicated by septic pulmonary embolism (PE), has historically been described as a disease of young adults. In recent years, an increasing number of case reports of childhood Lemierre's syndrome have been published, focusing mostly on the clinical and laboratory findings at disease presentation and the outcomes of infection. Given the potentially life-threatening thromboembolic complications of this disorder, we reviewed our single-institutional experience with pediatric Lemierre's and Lemierre's-like syndromes (LALLS) from within the context of a larger cohort study of thrombosis in children...
