Random-Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models allow for the decomposition of measurements into between- and within-person components and have hence become popular for testing developmental hypotheses. Here, we describe how developmental researchers can implement, test and interpret interaction effects in such models using an empirical example from developmental psychopathology research. We illustrate the analysis of Within × Within and Between × Within interactions utilising data from the United Kingdom-based Millennium Cohort Study within a Bayesian Structural Equation Modelling framework...

Adolescence is a sensitive period for categorical self-concept development, which affects the ability to take others' perspectives, which might differ from one's own, and how self-related information is memorized. Little is known about whether these two processes are related in adolescence. The current study recruited 97 male participants aged 11-35 years. Using a self-referential memory task, we found that younger participants were less prone to recognize previously seen town-related adjectives, compared to self-related adjectives...

Given well-established links between socio-economic adversity and mental health, it is unsurprising that young people's mental health is deteriorating amidst economic crises. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognises mental health as "crucial to personal, community, and socio-economic development" and outlines goals to reshape environments such as schools to protect mental health. Schools offer an ideal setting to promote wellbeing and prevent mental ill-health during a key developmental window. We describe how social inequalities present a challenge to designing school-based interventions for prevention and promotion for mental health and wellbeing, and suggest priorities to aid and evaluate their effectiveness...

BACKGROUND: Several observational studies indicate that dietary habits in children and adolescents are associated with school performance. These associations are heavily confounded by socio-economic characteristics, such as household income and parents' educational attainment, amongst other factors. The objective of this study was to explore the association between diet and school performance in adolescents from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC1986). METHODS: Dietary and school performance data were collected using self-reported questionnaires from adolescents in the NFBC1986 cross-sectional, 16-year follow-up study...

The coupling of carboxylic acids and amines to form amide linkages is the most commonly performed reaction in the pharmaceutical industry. Herein, we report a new strategy that merges these traditional amide coupling partners to generate sulfonamides, important amide bioisosteres. This method leverages copper ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) to convert aromatic acids to sulfonyl chlorides, followed by one-pot amination to form the corresponding sulfonamide. This process requires no prefunctionalization of the native acid or amine and extends to a diverse set of aryl, heteroaryl, and s -rich aliphatic substrates...

The 2,2'-bipyridyl-6,6'-dicarboxylate ligand ( bdc ) has been shown in prior work to effectively capture the uranyl(VI) ion, UO2 2+ , from aqueous solutions. However, the redox properties of the uranyl complex of this ligand have not been addressed despite the relevance of uranium-centered reduction to the nuclear fuel cycle and the presence of a bipyridyl core in bdc , a motif long recognized for its ability to support redox chemistry. Here, the bdc complex of UO2 2+ ( 1-UO 2 ) has been synthetically prepared and isolated under nonaqueous conditions for the study of its reductive chemical and electrochemical behavior...

Professor Sir Colin Blakemore was a remarkable neuroscientist, persuasive communicator, and brave advocate for animal research who, sadly, passed away in June 2022 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. His work helped establish the concept of neuronal plasticity, which was fundamental to our understanding of the postnatal brain and continues to impact our outlook on neurodegenerative disorders. The BNA2023 Festival of Neuroscience dedicated its last plenary session in his honour, bringing together five prominent neuroscientists whose careers were shaped by Professor Blakemore...

BACKGROUND: Everyday affective fluctuations are more extreme and more frequent in adolescence compared to any other time in development. Successful regulation of these affective experiences is important for good mental health and has been proposed to depend on affective control. The present study examined whether improving affective control through a computerised affective control training app (AffeCT) would benefit adolescent mental health. METHODS: One-hundred and ninety-nine participants (11-19 years) were assigned to complete 2 weeks of AffeCT or placebo training on an app...

INTRODUCTION: Although great strides have been made in maternal and newborn health in Nepal, the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) is still high at 186 per 100,000 births. Many maternal deaths are preventable if there is access to a skilled birth attendant (SBA). The Ministry of Health and Population of Nepal launched the in-service SBA training program in 2007 and has trained over 10,000 SBAs to date. Evidence shows that one episode of training is not enough to retain skills. Therefore, the Nick Simons Institute (NSI) in collaboration with National Health Training Center (NHTC) devised a Follow-Up and Enhancement Program (FEP) in 2011 where the knowledge, clinical skills, and working environment of SBA graduates were assessed directly at their worksites...

OBJECTIVE: Fetal megacystis generally presents as suspected lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO), which is associated with severe perinatal morbidity. Genetic etiologies underlying LUTO or a LUTO-like initial presentation are poorly understood. BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that the congenital pulmonary airway malformation volume ratio (CVR) is a useful prognosticator of neonatal outcome in prenatally diagnosed lung lesions. However, there remains a lack of consensus on which CVR values have the best predictive value due to operator dependence, inherent changes in lung lesion size throughout gestation, and the widespread use of maternal steroids. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine the association between serial CVR measurements and neonatal outcome among fetuses with lung malformations...

REVIEW

Mental health problems in young people have been on the rise for over a decade, with that trend accelerating during the pandemic. This review proposes that the catalyst effect of the pandemic offers insights into a key driver of increases in youth depression and anxiety: greater uncertainty. Uncertainty about many aspects of everyday life, including social connections, education, job security and health, increased during the pandemic, and this coincided with increasing rates of depression and anxiety. Lab-based developmental cognitive and clinical neuroscience research on tolerance of uncertainty and adolescent mental health shows that when adolescents fail to show age-typical tolerance of uncertainty, they are at greater risk of mental health problems...
