PURPOSE: This study measured serum hypoxia--inducible factor-1 (HIF-1α) and survivin levels in patients with diabetes and investigated their association with the severity of retinopathy. METHODS: This study included 88 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who underwent routine eye examinations. Three groups were created. Group 1 consisted of patients without diabetic retinopathy. Group 2 included patients with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Group 3 included patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy...

INTRODUCTION: Histological images contain phenotypic information predictive of patient outcomes. Due to the heavy workload of pathologists, the time-consuming nature of quantitatively assessing histological features, and human eye limitations to recognize spatial patterns, manually extracting prognostic information in routine pathological workflows remains challenging. Digital pathology has facilitated the mining and quantification of these features utilizing whole-slide image (WSI) scanners and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms...

The randomized AMBORA trial showed that medication errors are frequent in patients treated with oral antitumor therapeutics and that they can be substantially reduced by an intensified clinical pharmacological/pharmaceutical care program. While randomized controlled trials are essential to generate clinical evidence, their generalizability in real-world is not always given. The AMBORA care program was implemented in clinical routine within the AMBORA Competence and Consultation Center (AMBORA Center) at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Erlangen-EMN, allowing a thorough comparison of medication error frequencies and characteristics...

Controlling the enantiomeric purity of chiral drugs is of paramount importance in pharmaceutical chemistry. Isotropic 1 H NMR spectroscopy involving chiral agents is a widely used method for discriminating enantiomers and quantifying their relative proportions. However, the relatively weak spectral separation of enantiomers (1 H Δ δ iso ( R , S )) in frequency units at low and moderate magnetic fields, as well as the lack of versatility of a majority of those agents with respect to different chemical functions, may limit the general use of this approach...

PURPOSE: To examine the cerebro-placental-uterine ratio (CPUR) in pregnant women with pregestational diabetes and determine its role in predicting adverse prenatal outcomes. METHODS: This prospective, cohort study conducted at a tertiary hospital included 65 patients with pregestational diabetes (25 with type1 diabetes, 40 with type2 diabetes) and 130 low-risk patients in the control group. The cerebroplacental (CPR) ratio and the CPUR were calculated. Composite adverse perinatal outcome (CAPO) is defined as the presence of any of the following: (1) Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission, (2) Apgar at 5 min <7, and (3) umbilical cord arterial pH <7...

BACKGROUND: Evidence of COVID-19 vaccine safety relied upon the global vaccine monitoring infrastructure due to shortened clinical development timelines and emergency use licensure. Differences in AVSS capacity between high-income countries (HICs) versus low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) were known prior to the pandemic. OBJECTIVE: To assess the global landscape of COVID-19 vaccine AVSS activities to identify gaps in safety evidence generation across vaccine products and populations with a focus on LMICs...

Azoospermia is a serious leading male-factor cause of infertility in couples of childbearing age. The two main azoospermia types, obstructive (OA) and non-obstructive (NOA) azoospermia, differ in their treatment approaches. Therefore, their clinical diagnosis is extremely important, requiring an accurate, efficient, and easy-to-use diagnostic model. This retrospective observational study included 707 patients with azoospermia treated between 2017 and 2021, 498 with OA, and 209 with NOA. Hematological and seminal plasma parameters, hormone levels, and testicular volume were used in logistic regression analysis to evaluate and compare their diagnostic performance, results showed that the optimal diagnostic model is constructed by five variables including semen volume, semen pH, seminal plasma neutral α-glucosidase activity, follicle-stimulating hormone in the serum, and testicular volume, compared with follicle-stimulating hormone-based and testicular volume-based models...

Among the eight types of aroma and flavour characteristics of Chinese flue-cured tobacco (FCT), tobacco grown in Shandong is classified as having a honey-sweet and burnt aroma. To elucidate the key chemical components that determine the characteristics of the honey-sweet and burnt aroma styles of Shandong FCT, we qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated the smoke flavour quality and five categories of flavour-related chemical components (routine components, water-soluble sugars, free amino acids, Amadori compounds and key aroma-active compounds) in Shandong middle FCT leaves using sensory analysis and modern instrumental analysis techniques...

OBJECTIVE: Colonoscopy is useful in diagnosing intestinal tuberculosis. However, the terminal ileum is generally not examined during routine colonoscopy. Therefore, even with colonoscopy, the diagnosis can be missed in patients with lesions confined to the terminal ileum. Herein, we report the case of an asymptomatic patient with intestinal tuberculosis, in whom a colonoscope insertion into the terminal ileum led to the diagnosis. BACKGROUND: Nucleus replacement devices (NRDs) are not routinely used in clinic, predominantly due to the risk of device expulsion. Rigorous in vitro testing may enable failure mechanisms to be identified prior to clinical trials; however, current testing standards do not specify a particular expulsion test. Multiple methods have therefore been developed, complicating comparisons between NRD designs. Thus, this study assessed the effectiveness of four previously reported expulsion testing protocols; hula-hoop (Protocol 1), adapted hula-hoop (Protocol 2), eccentric cycling (Protocol 3), and ramp to failure (Protocol 4), applied to two NRDs, one preformed and one in situ curing...
