The prognosis for malignant brain tumors remains poor despite a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. This is partly due to the blood-brain barrier, a major obstacle that prevents therapeutic agents from effectively reaching the tumor. We have recently developed a method for precise and predictable opening of the blood-brain barrier via the intra-arterial administration of mannitol, a hyperosmolar agent, in a rabbit model, whose vascular anatomy facilitates the use of standard interventional neuroradiology techniques and devices...

Chronic subdural haematoma (cSDH), one of the most common neurosurgical entities, occurs typically in elderly patients. The incidence is expected to double by the year 2030, owing to the continuous aging of the population. Surgery is usually the treatment of choice, but conservative treatment may be a good alternative in some situations. We provide a systematic review of studies analysing the conservative treatment options and the natural history of cSDH. Of 231 articles screened, 35 were included in this systematic review...

Mesorhizobium alhagi, a legume-symbiont soil bacterium that forms nodules with the desert plant Alhagi sparsifolia, can produce large amounts of exopolysaccharide (EPS) using mannitol as carbon source. However, the role of EPS in M. alhagi CCNWXJ12-2(T), an EPS-producing rhizobium with high salt resistance, remains uncharacterized. Here, we studied the role of EPS in M. alhagi CCNWXJ12-2(T) using EPS-deficient mutants constructed by transposon mutagenesis. The insertion sites of six EPS-deficient mutants were analyzed using single primer PCR, and two putative gene clusters were found to be involved in EPS synthesis...

Although endoscopic transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a well-established procedure as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, its complications remain a concern. Among these, coagulopathy may be caused by the absorption of irrigating fluid. This study aimed to evaluate such phenomenon using a rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM).A total of 20 patients undergoing TURP participated in this study. A mixture of 2.7% sorbitol-0.54% mannitol solution and 1% ethanol was used as an irrigating fluid, and fluid absorption was measured via the ethanol concentration in expired breath...

The paper provides a novel method for the reversible control of solubility by use of functionalized nanoparticles. The nanoparticles are functionalized with functional groups that can act as a co-solvent or anti-solvent and thus can induce either dissolution or crystallization. The process is reversible, as the solution will go back to its original state when the nanoparticles are removed. The use of magnetic nanoparticles facilitates this reversibility. Reductions in solubility (and thus crystallization) were demonstrated for d-mannitol-water, sodium chloride-water and fenofibrate-ethyl acetate systems...

Cytochrome P450s play an important role in plant growth and are involved in multiple stresses response. However, little is known about the functions of cytochrome P450s in apple. Here, a Malus × domestica cytochrome P450 monooxygenase 1 gene, MdCYPM1, was identified and subsequently cloned from apple 'Gala' (Malus × domestica). To verify the functions of MdCYPM1, we generated transgenic Arabidopsis plants expressing the apple MdCYPM1 gene under the control of the Cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter...

This study aims to develop a method for isolating and purifying protoplasts/vacuoles from fresh leaves of the Cd hyperaccumulator plant species, Sedum alfredii. The results revealed that preheating cellulase and macerozyme at 50 °C for 5 min significantly accelerated the cell wall degradation. For the most optimal conditions for mesophyll protoplast isolation, the mixture of fresh leaves and cell lysates was followed by a 2-h-long vibration. The protoplast lysate for vacuole isolation was diluted, and 0.675 mmol/L was identified as the most appropriate 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl) dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonic acid (CHAPS) level, in which S...

2,6-Dibromohydroquinone (2,6-DBrHQ) has been identified as an reactive metabolite of many brominated phenolic environmental pollutants such as tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA), bromoxynil and 2,4,6-tribromophenol, and was also found as one of disinfection byproducts in drinking water. In this study, we found that the combination of 2,6-DBrHQ and Cu(II) together could induce synergistic DNA damage as measured by double strand breakage in plasmid DNA and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) formation, while either of them alone has no effect...

Several plants, fungi, algae, and certain bacteria produce mannitol, a polyol derived from fructose. Mannitol has multiple industrial applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and medical industries, being mainly used as a non-metabolizable sweetener in foods. Many heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria synthesize mannitol when an alternative electron acceptor such as fructose is present in the medium. In previous work, we reported the ability of Lactobacillus reuteri CRL 1101 to efficiently produce mannitol from sugarcane molasses as carbon source at constant pH of 5...

The complex formation equilibria between Ca(2+) ions and six carbohydrate derivatives related to d-glucose was quantitatively characterized by potentiometry, freezing point depression and polarimetry. Complexation could not be observed for d-glucose, while weak association was deduced for d-sorbitol and d-mannitol. Stronger complexes are formed with d-gluconate and d-heptagluconate due to the presence of the carboxylate group. In addition to the plausible 1 : 1 species, the 1 : 2 species can also be detected at higher ligand to metal ratios...
